“Main Chup Rahoongi” (1962) was an A V M Production movie. It was directed by A Bhim Singh. The movie had Sunil Dutt, Meena Kumari, Nana Palsikar, Jagirdar, Raj Mehra, Mohan Choti, Umesh Sharma, Parshuram, Shanti, Helen, Babloo etc in it.
This movie, which was a tearjerker in the opinions of those who have seen it, was a musical blockbuster as well. As many as six songs from this movie have been discussd so far. The list includes the timeless classic Tumhi ho maata pitaa tumhi ho which became school prayers in many schools.
Here is the seventh song from this movie. This song is sung by Rafi. It is picturised on Sunil Dutt who is seen lip syncing this song on the streets of Bombay in a drunk state.
Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Chitragupta.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

Thanks Nitinbhai for reminding this Rafi’s gem. I don’t know in how many songs you see Sunil Dutt as a drunkard. 😦

Yes, ‘Main Chup Rahoongi’ was indeed a tearjerker. Those were the days when filmgoers probably got a kick out of shedding tears in the movie halls! And who better than the ‘South’ made Hindi movies to make people weep?! These movies, called ‘family socials’ were immensely popular with the moviegoers of that time. I remember watching this movie as a 12 year old boy with my parents. The bucketful of tears notwithstanding, I loved the melodious Rafi-Lata duet, “Chand jaane kahan kho gaya…” To this day, I love this song and every time I listen to it, I remember, poor Chitragupta, who, in spite of his immense talents never really got his due. Like Madan Mohan, Jaidev, N Datta, Hansraj Behl and many many others.
