Sharaabi aankhen gulaabi chehra

“Madhosh” (1974) was produced by Tahir Hussain and directed by Desh Gautam. The movie had Reena Roy, Rakesh Roshan, Mahendra Sandhu, Johny Walker, Helen, Jayshree T, Ravindra Kapoor etc in it. Present day star Aamir Khan is also present in the movie as a child artist.
This movie came up at a time when I was at my precocious best as a follower of Hindi movie songs. I had heard the songs of this movie and I liked them but I was not aware of the details about the song, including the name of the movie. In fact I was not awrae of this movie till a few hours back !
During 1970s, when I was growing up as a pre teen and then teen, I loved listening to the music of R D Burman. Later on, when I discovered the voice of R D Burman, I enjoyed listening to his unique voice as well.
It was not necessary that I knew the details of all R D Burman compositions. There were cases when I enjoyed songs composed by R D Burman without being aware of the details of the songs.
Take the song “Sharaabi aankhen gulaabi chehra”. I had heard this song during its time and I in fact loved this song, mainly because of the fact this had the unique voice of R D Burman in it. I had discovered R D Burman’s singing voice after listening (and watching) the song Duniyaa mein logon ko dhokhaa kabhi ho jaataa hai (Apna Desh) .
I had watched “Apna Desh” (1972), so I was aware of the details of the song “Duniya mein logon ko”, whereas I was not even aware of the name of the movie that the song “sharaabi aankhen gulaabi chehra” belonged to !
It is only now, some four decades later that I have found out the details of this song. This song belongs to a movie called “Madhosh” (1974). I was not even aware of this movie during its time, whereas I was fully aware about its songs !
“Madhosh” (1974), I now learn, was produced by Tahir Hussain and directed by Desh Gautam. The movie had Reena Roy, Rakesh Roshan, Mahendra Sandhu, Johny Walker, Helen, Jayshree T, Ravindra Kapoor etc in it. Present day star Aamir Khan is also present in the movie as a child artist.
The song “Sharaabi aankhen gulaabi chehra” is sung by R D Burman and Asha Bhonsle. Now I have come to know that this song is picturised as a get together/ party song. Asha Bhonsle sings for Helen as is to be expected, but guess who lip syncs in R D Burman’s voice ? It is Rakesh Roshan. Present day movie followers, who have known his as the father of Hrithik Roshan and have always seen him as a balk man will barely believe it when they find that he actually had a thick mop of hair on his head once upon a time.
The picturisation also shows Mahendra Sandhu who does not take any part in the singing. Mahendra Sandhu idolised Dharmendra and he dreamt of becoming the Dharmendra of B grade movies.
The fact that such a wonderful song should belong to a by now forgotten movie means that music lovers who may not have heard this song during its first run may not even be aware about it. What a fantastic song it was. In fact it retains its magic even today.
When I was growing up as a music lover in 1970s then R D Burman was everyone’s favourite music director. Whatever R D Burman touched turned to gold those days.
If my choice of Hindi movie songs had remained the same today as it was in 1970s then R D Burman’s songs would have dominated in this blog. The fact that as many as five music directors have more songs in this blog that R D Burman shows that my choice of Hindi movie music have become more diverse than what it was four decades ago. But the fact remains that R D Burman’s music was the first love for music lovers of my generation.
So it gives me great pleasure to present this song from “Madhosh” (1974). It is the 300th R D Burman composition in the blog. And I feel that this song in a way is a very good representation of R D Burman’s music of that era which had swept music lovers off their feet at that time.
Here is this fantastic R D Burman composition from “Madhosh” (1974). Enjoy !

Lyrics
tu
turu tu tu turu tu
sharaabi aankhen
gulaabi chehra
sharaabi aankhen
gulaabi chehra
kaisa lage mera
dilruba
dil mera
dilruba
dil mera
gulaabi chehra
sabhi ne dekha
dekha nahin magar
dil mera
dilruba
dil mera
dil ruba
gulaabi chehra
ye zulfen
aa
kyaa lage
jaise chhaaon dhale
meri chale to is chaaon mein bita doon saari zindagi
aa ye nazar
pyaar ka ghar
haay pagley
yaar se alag
duniya mere ghar ki
hogi aur bhi
tu ru tu
tu ru tu
gulaabi chehra
sabhi ne dekha
dekha nahin magar
dil mera
he he he
he he
gulaabi chehra
ye badan
aaa kyaa karan
kyaa kehne
tum se miloon to kuchh yaad nahin aaye
chaahat ke siwaa
aa ye baahen
aaa
pyaar chaahen
aa haay deewaane
kaam in baahonka ka aur bhi to hoga
chaahat ke siwaa
turututu turu tu
gulaabi chehra
sabhi ne dekha
dekha nahin magar
dil mera
he he he he
gulaabi chehra
ye kamal
aa haa
magar
na meri jaan
yoon hi to log bekaar nahin bharte
aahen subaho shaam
aa zaalimaa
aa dilruba
o naadaan
jaan dilruba ke
alaawa bhi to hoga
mera koi naam
tu tu ru tu
tu ru tu
sharaabi aankhen
gulaabi chehra
kaisa lage mera dilruba
oy oy oy oy
gulaabi chehra
sabhi ne dekha
dekha nahin magar
dil mera
dilruba
dil mera
dilruba
gulaabi chehra
gulaabi chehra

2nd stanza 2nd line

Atulji, sorry to contradict you. I think he is wearing a wig because the partition (or maang, again sorry. I dont know whether I can use this word with reference to males :)) is not visible. It looks a bit unkempt at the backside also.

I feel, Rakesh Roshan in his first lot of movies(like Man mandir,
Aankhon aankhon mein,Parayaa dhan,Ghar ghar ki kahaani,Nafrat,
Aankh Micholi,Buniyad,Seema, Ek Kunwara ek kunwari)didn`t wear wigs.
After 1974 he started to wear wigs with movies like Madhosh,Khel Khel mein,Trimurthi,Aakraman,Zakmee
And the “Hair problem” was there with Roshan Saab and Rajesh Roshan also. It is “hereditary” I think.
