This article is written by Arunkumar Deshmukh, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

After the Talkie films got established and enjoyed a good response from public, more people entered the business, more films were made and naturally more actors and actresses were needed. There was no problem in getting good, educated and talented actors. Problem was getting good, educated and talented actresses.

The Indian culture and society was not conducive to women working in films, in those days. Initially, the situation was that the Female roles were being done by Males !

No women were ready to work in films. There was also another requirement that she should be able to sing.

This situation was tailormade for those women who were already in dancing and singing profession(read Tawaifs). Many such young girls from the singing families were eager to work in films, as it gave them money and fame. These girls who joined films from singing families later married some actors, producers or directors and settled. However these were marriages of conviniences and hence did not last long. There were divorces and remarriages galore in the film industry.

The famed singer Jaddanbai was also one such woman. Before entering films, she, as a famous singer, had married Narotthamdas Khatri- who became Bachhu Babu after conversion and gave her one son- Akhtar Hussain. Once she settled in films, she divorced him . Then she married her own Harmonium accompanist Irshaad Meer Khan, from whom she got another son- Anwar Hussain. Soon she divorced him too and the third time she was lucky. She got her true love in Mohan Babu from whom she got Nargis.

Akhtar Hussain was a different type of person. He kept away from the family, but continued to work for Home productions as a Director and worked in a few films also.

Anwar Hussain was born on 2-1-1928 at Calcutta. His mother had divorced his father before his birth,so when ” usne hosh sambhala”, he saw only Mohan Babu as his father.

Of course he got equal treatment with Nargis. He was an educated, tall, handsome person. He joined Films. Though he was Hero in just 2 films or so, he did character and villain roles effectively.

Being a brother of a celebrity had its own problems, but it is to his credit that till last he stayed with Nargis and worked in her films.

He acted in some 150 films.

He died on 2-1-1988.

DAKU-1955 was a Basant Pictures film.In 1929, Wadia Movietone was established by JBH Wadia and Homi Wadia. They specialised in stunt and fantasy films. Fearless Nadia,
John Cavas and Master Vithal were their stars. In the early 40s, JBH Wadia was of the opinion that they should now make social films. Homi Wadia was against this idea. On this they separated and Homi Wadia established Basant Pictures to continue with Stunt films.

Aspy Irani,a regular Director with Wadia Movietone joined Basant Pictures. Aspy Irani excelled in directing fantasy and stunt films. He directed Daku-55. The lyrics were by M.L.Khanna
(Father of music director Usha Khanna), Kaif Bhopali and Kaif Irfani. Music director was Snehal Bhatkar. The cast was Shammi Kapoor, Shashikala, Kuldip Kaur, Azuri, Anwar Hussain, Habib, Babu Raje, Sheikh, W.M.Khan, Sulochana etc.

In the kingdom of Suryapur, after the king, Dewan Ajit Singh was the de-facto ruler-the queen mother and the young Prince being submissive. Ajit calls Samir, a Gypsy sardar, to kill the Prince on his 4th Birthday. But instead of killing him, Samir takes away the prince with his moving Carvan.

After 20 years, Samir comes back to Suryapur. He sends Badal(Shammi Kapoor), Ustad(Anwar Hussain), Paro(Azuri) and Nili(Kuldip Kaur) to the Palace to sing and dance to earn some money.

The young princess (Shashikala) falls in love with Badal, which Nili does not like. The princess is fake and it is her Birthday. The new ruler Captain Kishori- in place of Ajit Singh- recognises that Badal is the real Prince and wishes to kill him. However, he only arrests him. Badal’s friend Ustad, with the help from fake princess and Paro rescues Badal.

Captain.Kishori, based on Astrologer’s prediction, makes Badal king for a day and plans to kill him next day.On becomin the king, Badal repeals all unjust laws, punishes corrupt officials and releases the queen mother(who is his real mother) from jail. Next day, in a fierce fighting Badal kills Captain Kishori and the rightful heir to the throne becomes the King.

Today we are going to see and enjoy a song from “Daaku” (1955) sung by Anwar Hussain with Asha Bhosle.

The video shows Azuri(Paro in the film) dancing and Anwar Hussain(Ustad in the film) managing the jail wardens.

i was also thinking the same thing. i remember him in the “Nanha Farishta” song i used to love it as a kid. i wasaround the same age as the kid in the song when i went along with my parents for that movie. but i became aware of it much later when i saw the movie on DD sunday evening show. oh i miss those 1 movie per week days. seeing movies 24hrs in various channels has taken away the charm of seeing movies in theatres. added to that the multiplex is not the way to enjoy movies.

oh, i absolutely agree. I remember once in the very early days of VCR, i ended up at my uncle’s place at mumbai, and their neighbor had gone out of the town leaving their keys with my aunt. Since the neighbors had this fancy TV & VCR from Sony, my cousins and I had to coax my aunt in letting us in the neighbor’s place, so we could watch movies all day, and she would lock us inside so other neighbors wouldnt know if we were inside. On another occasion, we ended up in a very small town for some wedding and there was a staircase in this house we were staying. So if u climb all the way up, u can watch the tv screen of the neighbor, so we would take turns and watch and describe the movie to the rest of the gang waiting for their turns 🙂 Finally when I ended up studying at an american university, they had this huge library where u could book the big screen for watching “educational” videos and that got abused too for watching bollywood movies by bribing Samosas to people in charge 😉 It was all a lot more fun when things were difficult to get to. Now I have all kinda blue rays and dvds and what not, 4-5 thousand movies, that i can watch anytime i want to, but its just not that fun.
