Koi kab tak rahe akela

This article is written by Arunkumar Deshmukh, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

We are born with whatever God has given us and we can not change it. Some are born handsome, some tall and some handicapped. Some are born with ‘silver spoon in their mouth’ and yet some are born with artistic inclination.

What can one do if he wants something which he does not have inherently ? Great souls change their Destiny by sheer hard work and some stoically accept what is given to them by Him.

And yet there are some people who convert their shortcomings to their advantage in life and lead a happier life. This, ofcourse, is not possible for everyone. In the first place, we never think in this direction and secondly most are not ready to put in the required hard work.

What about those who ‘have’ to take advantage of their shortcomings to survive sustain and even prosper ? In the film industry we find lot of such examples. When Talkie films came there was a demand for working girls with singing capability. So the girls from singing families(read Kothewalis and Tawayafs) got into films. In the society they were looked down upon, but oncethey joined films they got money, respect and sometimes a husband also !

When Lalita Pawar was slapped hard and her eye was damaged plus a facial paralysis distorted her facial muscles, She- who was once a Heroine in demand- coolly shifted to roles of a shrew or a tormenting Mother in law. Her face was an asset in this.

When the famed singer Uma Devi became very fat due to an eating disorder, she became Tun Tun the comedienne and regaled people for over next 40 years.

BHUDO ADVANI was one such actor, who suffered from a genetic disorder in the family, wherin the males in the family lost hair and teeth in young age itself. He used this malady to his advantage and became a comedian in the 30s and 40s.( Just to refresh your memory , Bhudo Advani is the same actor who is seen prominently doing the aalaaps in the song ‘Lapak zapak…’ of Boot Polish-54).

Born as DAULATRAM ADVANI on 17-8-1905 in Hyderabad(Sindh)-now in Pakistan-, he was keen on acting in dramas from the young age. This was when his teeth and hair were intact. He was popular with his stage shows, dramas and disguises as a Girl dancer. When he suffered with loss of hair and teeth, he came to Bombay in 1932 and met Mohan Bhavnani, who was also from Hyderabad(Sindh). Advani made his debut with Afzal and Maya Jaal in 1933, then did 5 films in 34 and 3 in 35. He joined Sagar Movietone and worked in most of their films. He moved to National Studios after Sagar was shut and worked with Mehboob in many films. He did about 200 films. He will be remembered for his roles in Bootpolish, Madhumati, Ab Dilli door nahin, Shri 420, Chhoti chhoti Baten etc. He was a favourite of Raj Kapoor and his personal car was used to be sent to fetch Bhudo for shootings daily.

K.K.Modi, brother of Sohrab Modi and owner of Central Studios gave him a very big flat in Tardeo, Bombay on nominal rent. The flat was so spacious that the reception of his daughter’s marriage was held in the flat for about 100 persons. Here he got friendly with many leading artists who came for shooting in Central studios.

Advani was a very simple man. According to his son Ramesh, he was called Buddu in the film industry and the name became Budho later. Where Sanji Narvekar, in his book says that due to his missing teeth and hair he was called Budhho which became Bhudo finally. Whatever the rality,he accepted this name gracefully.

From 1960 onwards he got less films, with the new crop of comedians ruling the roost and his financial condition became bad. However his only surviving son got a Bank job and things improved. His last film was ‘Shatranj ke khiladi’ in 1977. After retiement, he used to sit in his brother’s shop for some time. He died on 25-7-1985.

He also acted in 4 Sindhi films. He had a major role in India’s first Sindhi Film ‘Abana’. In two of these Sindhi films his wife also acted as his wife. In the first 20 years of his career Bhudo Advani was in great demand and he averaged about 3 films per month those days.

No one from the industry attended his last journey except his friend Mirza Musharraf. The news of his death first appeared in a Sindhi paper in Karachi and then in India.

Today we will hear his only song in which he has sung few lines. This song is sung by Jyoti,Bhudo Advani and Prem Adib.

Prem Adib is the same famous actor who worked as RAM in the epic film RAMRAJYA-1943,along with Shobhana Samarth as SEETA. This song is much earlier to that film.

The female singer is Jyoti.

JYOTI was born in 1921 in a professional singer’s house in Agra-UP. Waheedan Bai was her elder sister. She grew up in a musical atmosphere. She learnt the classical music of Agra Gharana.

Her entry into films was easy due to elder sister already being in films. Anil Biswas gave her first opportunity in Comrades-39 to act and sing 2 solo songs.

Then came Ek hi Rasta and Sadhana.

Actually, she became famous after Aurat-40, in which she had 5 songs. Same year Pooja and Sanskar also added to her fame. In Sanskar, she sang with sister Waheedan Bai and also with Harish. Thus 1940 was a very lucky year for Jyoti.

In 1941,Darshan and Radhika,jawani-42,Amanat-43,Devar and Saathi in 46 saw her in films.

Her voice had some resemblance to Parul Ghosh. She was not a great singer, but Anil Biswas supported her very much.

She married G.M.Durani-MD, Singer and Actor.

She had done also Uski tamanna and Bhole Bhale in 1939.

Let us now enjoy the interesting song.

Lyrics

koi kab tak rahe akela
mausam aaya albela
koi kab tak rahe akela
koi kab tak rahe akeli
rut aayi hai albeli
koi kab tak rahe akeli

koi kab tak rahe akela
baanke chhaila albela
main magarmachh mastaana
main machhli ka deewaana
main magarmachh mastaana
main machhli ka deewaana

main machhli jal ki raani
Ganga meri rajdhaani
main machhli jal ki raani
Ganga meri rajdhaani

ham bagula bhagat puraane
hain Majnu duniyaa jaane
hai machhli apni Laila
hai machhli apni Laila
koi kab tak rahe akela
baanke chhaila albela

machhli jal se preet lagaaye ae ae
hmm hmm
machhli jal se preet lagaaye ae ae
hmm hmm
kabhi vivaad ki ghadi na aaye ae
kabhi vivaad ki ghadi na aaye
?? apni wo jaan ganwaaye
?? wo apni jaan ganwaaye

preet wahi sachhi duniya mein
preet wahi sachhi duniya mein
praan ke mol bithaaye
haan
praan ke mol bithaaye
hain preet praan ka mela

laila majnu ka jhamela
koi kab tak rahe akela
baanke chhaila albela
koi kab tak rahe akela
mausam aaya albela

Zoher ji,
according to his only surviving son Ramesh ji,who is my friend staying as my neighbour even now,Bhudo advani had 7 children-2 sons(one died too early) and 5 daughters.I have personally met 2 of his daughters(one stays close by to our house in Andheri) just last year.
As far as I know Rajni was Bhudo’s brother’s daughter and none of his children were allowed to enter films.

Zoher ji,
I checked with Ramesh ji,his son and he told me that initially when Bhudo stayed there Rajani also stayed there and that’s how she got introduced to many filmwallahs coming there for shooting.Since Rajani was joining films,Bhudo ji purposely kept his family away so that his daughters were not influenced by her. When Rajani left to stay elsewhere, the family members joined Bhudo ji in that flat.
Bhudo & his family stayed there till early 80s.
