Sapnon mein mere koi aaye jaaye

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

‘Poonam Ki Raat’ is a film from almost 50 years ago. And the thought comes to mind that the period of time from which we remember the best loved music is now receding in history. Just the films and songs that used to be new and fresh in mind and in media, are now counted as half century old, and even older.

A significant concern that figures in my mind is that this treasure, as it gets older, will also decay in the memories of living realm and may be lost. And in fact, a large portion of this treasure is already lost, due to inattention, carelessness, neglect, and even gross negligence in some cases – the most serious example being the fire at the National Film Archives in Pune, some years back, in which priceless and rare prints were lost, forever. (No one cares about it, no actions happened. But the cruel fact is that it happened due to negligence and even greed of the concerned officials. The funding received from the govt includes the money for the air conditioning of the archives lab and storage areas. The funds were received, and diverted, even shown as used, but the air conditioning existed and was operated only on paper. The nitrate based celluloid is a delicate and self inflammatory material. With the temperatures in the storage areas being so high, the inevitable disaster did happen. But as I say who cares, least of all the govt).

The work that is happening on this blog, may seem a small effort, but it is now becoming a major endeavor that is contributing significantly towards the storage and preservation of a very important part of this treasure, i.e. the music and the related information. And the team work and leadership of this group has to be lauded for their relentless and consistent effort being applied towards this objective. There is a certain larger vision that is at work here. A similar grand initiative is the Hindi Film Geet Kosh that is a monumental compilation of the information relating to Hindi films and film songs. It is a peerless effort by Harmandir Singh ji ‘Hamraaz’ (based in Kanpur, India). He has spent a major part of his life over the past four decades in the endeavor to compile and preserve this information. Most people are aware that there are five volumes in print, spanning the years from 1931 to 1980. But only a very few people know that the work is still continuing. The data compilation for the decades starting 1981 and onwards is in fairly advanced stage. In fact the film indexing and filmography data is now compiled till 2010. In this centenary year of the Hindi films, Harmandir ji and his team is also extending this research to silent era, that is the period from 1913 to about mid 1930s, in an effort to complete the information compilation for the entire history of Indian Cinema.

My recent off and on absence from active participation on the blog is related to the things I have written above. During the last four to five weeks, there have been visitors to Delhi, and discussions have been initiated in an attempt to bring together people, their passions, and their effort towards a concentrated effort for preserving what I call a very important part of India’s heritage and recent history. There is a lot that I have to inform and share with this group, and I plan to do it over the next few posts, in terms of the updates on the project for digitization of Geet Kosh, and other actions being suggested towards this end. More on this in the next post.

‘Poonam Ki Raat’ (1965) is produced and directed by Kishore Sahu, under his own banner, Kishore Sahu Productions. The cast of actors in this film includes Manoj Kumar, Kumud Chhugaani, Nandini, Kishore Sahu, Shiv Kumar, Sapru, Bela Bose, Raj Kishore, Rajendranath, Ravindra Bannerjee, Prem Chopra, Praveen Chaudhry, Bhardwaj, Jankidas, Sabina, Gopraj, Sarita, Shailesh Kumar. The film has some very melodious music created by Salil Choudhary. The film has six songs that come from the pen of Shailendra. Four of these are already presented on this blog. Here is the fifth, another very melodious song from this film. This song is sung by three singers, and is performed by three actors on the screen. The voices are those of Mukesh, Lata, and Usha Mangeshkar. On screen, the actors in the video clip are Manoj Kumar, Kumud Chhugaani and Nandini. In this clip, we can see Manoj Kumar and Kumud Chhugaani are together as they sing this song, and Nandini is in a different room, but apparently singing for Manoj Kumar only.

The arrangement of the mukhdaa of the song is very interesting, as the male and female voices are moving at vastly different pace and rhythm. This song strongly reminds me of the Bharat Bhushan – Ameeta song from film ‘Saawan’ (1959, Hansraj Behl, Mukesh, Lata) “Nain Dwaar Se Mann Mein Wo Aa Ke. . .”.

What a lovely song this one is, another timeless beauty. Enjoy.

sapnon mein mere koi aaye jaaye
jhalki dikhaaye aur chhup jaaye, kuchh na bole

Someone, these days
Frequently passes through my reverie
Silently
A vision appearing
Just for a moment
Then fading way
Silently

dekho mera mann haaye re haaye
wo le ke chalaa jaaye re jaaye

O see, my mind, my heart
He has stolen
And is taking it away

mann ke nagar mein aayaa hai koi
khusiyaan hi khushiyaan laayaa hai koi
wo mera dil haaye re haaye
lubhaata chalaa jaaye re jaaye

In my mind’s inner reaches
I feel a presence
That brings joy and happiness
And persuades, and lures away
My heart, o my heart

meethi si uljhan mann bharmaaye
jab tab saari raat jagaaye
mere nainon mein wo chhaaye re chhaaye
na soojhe kuchh haaye re haaye

A pleasing, satisfying dilemma
Pervades my mind
And keeps the sleep away at nights
The image is imbued in my eyes
Suffused across my sight
Misting my thoughts

jab bhi wo mujh se nain milaaye
bhed jiyaa ka khul khul jaaye
wo jo mera ho jaaye re jaaye
to jee ko chain aaye re aaye

Perchance, when our gazes meet
The heart unfolds its secrets
Ah, if he could be mine
My heart would then be peaceful, serene

Very soon even the dedicated band of musiclovers will vanish from this earth and then what happens to this repository of music? I shudder to think because no one in the present era is aware of what they will inherit and they couldn’t care less. Disturbing thoughts on a Saturday morning. . .

We should motivate our sons and daughters to appreciate our type of music. i know it is a tall order. But do we must.

Yes Nitin Ji, I agree with you. I try to play old numbers to my daughter. She does seem to like it. But then there are her peers who are all listening to all the new numbers, so she listens to them too.
