The Voice of Mukesh #10
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
The first five years of Mukesh’s career, from 1941 to 1945 were sketchy, and not very productive. The available records show that he sang 14 songs in six films during these five years. His singing did not capture much attention, and Mukesh was a discouraged man, contemplating to leave Bombay and return home to Delhi. But then in 1945, ‘Pehli Nazar’ happened, under the baton of Anil Biswas. And after the release of ‘Pehli Nazar’, Mukesh’s career was on the up and up.
Coming into 1946, the available information shows, Mukesh sang 7 songs in five films, a dramatic increase on the basis of averages. ‘Chehra’ is a film from 1946, released under the banner of Upright Pictures, and is directed by Rajendra Sharma. It is a social drama and the list of actors includes Nazma, Kamal Zamindar, Suraiya Zulfi, S Kapoor, Mustafa, Jugal Kishore, Kaneez, Amir Banu, Baby Anwari, Baldev Raj, S Nazir, etc. The film has 9 songs, which are written by Ishwar Chandra Kapoor, and the music is composed by MA Mukhtar. The lyricist, IC Kapoor, is already represented on the blog, but the name of the music director is new.
The song presented is a wonderful duet sung by Shamshad Begum and Mukesh. The song is about love at first sight. The words beautifully describe the emotions of the first meeting, and the effect it has on the two lovebirds –
the state of the heart, the thoughts, the inability to express in words, and a simple query – ‘what have you done to me?, what magic you have played on me?’
A lovely song, a lovely rendition. Enjoy.
kya jaadu hai tere paas piyaa
surat dekhi, dil haar diyaa
Oh what is this wonderful magic
That you possess
Just one look of your face
And my heart is now lost
jo haal tera wo haal meraa
dil de ke mein ne dard liyaa
Me too
I am in the same state as you
My heart is given over to you
In exchange for this ache
That now sits in its place
bas nainon se nain milaaye thhe
nahin kehne sun’ne paaye thhe
halki si dil mein tthes lagi
meetha sa dil se dard utthaa
It was but
A matter of glances meeting
No words were spoken, expressed
As if a soft jolt landed on the heart
And this sweet aching has since arisen
kuchh dil se labon par aaye hai
haaye mujk se kahaa nahin jaaye
o be-fiqrey o be-parwaah
kuchh to bataa tu ne kyaa hai kiyaa
Something, some words
Try to rise up from the heart
To the lips
But I am not able to say them
O my nonchalant, indifferent dear
Speak to me
Tell me what you have done to me
kya jaadu hai tere paas piyaa
Oh what is this wonderful magic
That you possess
