This article is written by Sadanand Kamath, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.
In K L Saigal’s films, the songs sung by most of other singers remained on the periphery as compared to his magic spelled songs. Even on Radio Ceylon’s programme on old film songs which used to be broadcasted between 7.30-8.00 a.m. in olden days, I rarely heard songs of other singers in K L Saigal’s films while K L Saigal’s song used to be the final song of the programme. Take for example songs of ‘My Sister’ (1944). There are at least two beautiful solo songs sung by Utpala Sen but as compared with Saigal’s four songs which were hugely popular in my younger days, I had not heard any of her songs from this film until I bought one 78 RPM gramophone record in early 70s on which one side of the record had ‘jal jaane do is duniya ko’. I heard her other song from the film only last year.
The name Utpala Sen may not be familiar with most of the fans of Hindi film songs as she was mainly a singer of Bangla films and non-film songs. She sang only 15 Hindi film songs between 1944-52. This blog has so far discussed only one song of her. Arunkumar Deshmukh, in his article has given a brief profile of Utpala Sen which I am reproducing below :
Born on 12-3-1924, at Barisal (now Bangla Desh) ,Utpala Sen completed her post-graduation and started training in music from Pt. Atul Prasad in Calcutta. She started singing on AIR and also joined many stage shows. S.D.Burman heard her once and gave her the first film song in a Bangla film “Judge Saheber natni” (1943). Her first Hindi song was in New Theatre’s “My Sister” (1944).
Her songs from “Wasiyatnama” were popular.
She came to Bombay and sang for Pankaj Mullick in “Anjangadh” (1948). Later she sang in “Jhooti Kasmen” (1948),”Chhota Bhai” and “Manzoor” in 1949, “Mala” in 1951 and “Zalzala” in 1952. In “Mala” she had one solo, one duet with Hemant Kumar and one song with Neeta Sen, Neelima Sanyal and Sheela Mitra. MD was Souren Mitra and Gaur Goswami.
She got married to famous Bangla singer/composer Satinath Mukherjee, left for Calcutta and settled there for good. She continued singing only in Bangla filmi and non filmi songs. A rough estimate says, she sang close to 7000 songs.
Her husband died in 1992 and she died on 13-5-2005 at Calcutta.
Here is the 2nd song out of her 15 Hindi movie songs for discussion. The song is ‘main in phoolon sang doloon re’ from the film MY SISTER (1944). The film was produced under the banner of New Theatres and directed by Hemchandra Chunder. The star cast included K L Saigal, Sumitra Devi, Nawab, Akhtar Jehan, Devi Mukherjee, Chandrabati Devi, Tulsi Chakraborty etc. The song was written by Pandit Bhushan and set to music by Pankaj Mullick.
The song is picturised on Akhtar Jehan. It is a lovely song to watch and listen.
