I have been on a old movie watching spree recently. So far managed to see “Mere Mehboob” , “Deedar” and “Kaagaz ke Phool”. As it is, it is taking me 2-3 days to complete the film, because I do not like to miss a single scene or dialogue in the film. It has been a longtime wish to see “Kaaghaz ke Phool” which is finally fulfilled. Having seen “Pyaasa” I was somehow expecting a similar pathos laden fare. But this film is lot different as it is rather brighter with the spirit of ‘lights camera action’.
‘Kaaghaz ke Phool’ is produced and directed by Guru Dutt and he himself stars in it alongwith Waheeda Rehman, Baby Naaz, Johnny Walker and Tun Tun etc. The team is same by and large same as in “Pyaasa”. The exception being Sahir Ludhianvi who is replaced by Kaifi Azmi and Shailendra in this movie.
The film starts with ‘dekhi zamaane ki yaari …….. bichhde sabhi baari baari’. There is no showmanship here of ‘Jeena yehaan marna yehaan’ variety or even the propensity of ‘the show must go on…….’, but this is Guru Dutt’s swan song in my opinion. I would like to remember him as the reporter of ‘Mr and Mrs 55’, the dejected poet in ‘pyaasa’ but this being the latest character of ‘Sinha sahab ‘ it is superseding the other characters. I wonder on whom Guru Dutt modelled the character of ‘Suresh Sinha’. He is assertive and has his way even with the owner of the film studio where he is an employee. The movie is relived in flashback by the once hot shot film director in the deserted film studio and ends with the death of the old man whom no one recognises sitting in the Director’s chair.
Only Mohan Choti is shown wailing as he cries “Sinha sahab sinha sahab” with the tune of ‘waqt ne kiyaa kya haseen sitam’ playing in the background.
For these legends film making was a passion which they did putting their heart and soul in the films and songs. These lines in the second part of the song “Bichhde sabhi baari baari” say it plainly that nothing in the world is durable- not success, not failure, no friends and foes.

It would seem that all songs of the film are covered in the blog, but there is one small ditty sung by Mohammed rafi and Asha Bhosle, which is still not posted. Fortunately a video link of the song of 1.30 minutes is available on youtube. This is written by Kaifi Azmi and music director is S. D. Burman. It is picturized as a film shooting sequence where the actors are singing for the film shoot with Guru Dutt in the Director’s seat. The song is cut short as the shooting is stopped and the Director himself leaves his chair and goes upto the actress singing, as he is seeing Waheeda Rehman in her place. This scene is the beginning of the end of the Director’s career.
As he loses confidence in himself, arrives late for the shooting and takes to drinking as a solace. And rest as they say is history, which sadly culminated in the end of Guru Dutt himself. Critical acclaim, creative satisfaction and professional success can only take a person this far, but the demons of one personal life are to be dealt with firmness and strength. There are no ‘retakes’ there as on stage. I think the movie has answered a question in my mind about the real equation between Guru Dutt and Waheeda Rehman. As she says in film, ‘ ham ek doosre ko kabhi galat nahin samajh sakte ‘.

Whether the other artistes featuring in the songs are
Sheila Vaz and Shyam/Shyam Kapoor(Who also feature in the C.I.D famous song “Leke pehla pehlaa pyaar, bharke aankhon mein khumhaar”) ???
Shyam or Shyam Kapoor must be one of close associates of Guru dutt

Sheila Vaz seems to be the correct identification for the lady in this clip. However, I am not sure about the gentleman. The name Shyam Kapoor does appear in the cast list of CID, but does not appear in the cast list of this film.

One correction to the lyrics,
The line
“hans hans phenkaa phaansa”
should read
“hans hans phenkaa paasa”.
The word ‘paasa’ is the same as the dice used in man board games, as well as in gambling games.

I have noticed the word ‘paasa’ in the Devnagri lyrics. I agree that it should be ‘paasa’ . My problem is that i usually go with the pronounciation , and both Rafi and Asha are singing the word like ‘ phansa ‘ . I feel the complete recorded song must be existing somewhere if it was made.
And thanks for the devnagri lyrics. This is motivating me to try get the lyrcis is urdu for at least some songs which have words which cannot be spelled accurately in either English or hindi.
