Prem ke taange pe main udd jaaun

Posted on: January 18, 2013

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Just out of curiosity, I scanned the blog, for the listing of songs that have been composed by Chitragupt. And I find a peculiar thing. As a composer, Chitragupt started his career in 1946, and continued to be active till the early 80s. On the blog we have just about a dozen of his songs listed, for the first 10 years of his career (1946-1955), with no songs listed for the first four years i.e. from 1946 to 1949. When I tried to check online, I find that actually very little of his works are available online from this period. But still there are some. And I will try to post some of them over the coming few days.

One reason for this scarce availability of his earlier songs could be that in the beginning years, the films that he was associated with were mostly stunt films, bereft of any big name banners. And yes, many of his earlier films are obscure and untraceable. Sample this – in 1946, his debut year as an independent music director, the movies he composed for are titled ‘Lady Robinhood’, ‘Toofaan Queen’ and ‘Fighting Hero’. As far as I can make out after checking with Geet Kosh, as well as trawling online, no songs from these films have surfaced so far. And that even the information about these films and their songs is very sketchy, if any.

Same is the case with his films from 1947.

But when we search for his films in 1948, I find better luck. There are some songs that are available. And one of his films, ‘Tigress’ has surfaced. It has been released on disc last year, and the video clips of this film’s songs have been uploaded.

‘Tigress’ is a Nadia film. Produced under the banner of Basant Pictures, the film is directed by Keshav Talpade. The cast of actors for this film includes Nadia, Prakash, Dalpat, Sona Chatterjee, Bomman Shroff, Radha, Qamar, Jaal Khambatta, Kareem, Salim etc. The star cast also includes Rajput, the horse, Moti, the dog, and a car with name ‘Austin Ki Bachchi’. 🙂 (That is probably the most democratic list of actors I can recall). The five songs in this film are written by MC Hunar, and the music, of course is by Chitragupt.

Now this song is a very interesting and fun filled medley of parodies. The songs parodied are from the (then) recent hits from the prior two to three years. The scenario in the visual is a straight lift of “Akhiyaan Milaa Ke Jiyaa Bharma Ke Chale Nahin Jaana”, the iconic tonga song from the film ‘Rattan’ (1944). In that film, the tonga is driven by the gentleman (Karan Dewan) and the lady (Swarnalata) is on foot, making an effort to stop the tonga from going away from her. In this song, the roles are reversed :). The lady (Sona Chatterjee) is driving the tonga, and the poor gentleman (need firm identification here) is huffing and puffing and running after the tonga, imploring the lady to stop and allow him also to ride with her. The lady is obviously enjoying herself thoroughly, and the gentleman, although looking well worn out, does not give up the chase. The shooting of this song would really have been something. One can clearly see the lady is actually driving the tonga, and the gentleman chasing her is visibly exerting, while also trying to keep up with the singing :). Midway through the song, the gentleman manages to get a toehold on the tonga once but is promptly pushed off by the lady. And then of course, at the end, he does get on the tonga, and the two sing the last stanza together. Really a very interesting scenario.

Singing voices are not listed in any reference that I checked. I am tempted to say that lady’s voice is that of Shamshad Begum, but I would like others to help confirm. The gentleman’s voice is sort of familiar, but once again, not able to identify firmly. (Could this be Chitragupt himself? He has sung on his own music in many of his earlier films). So, help is needed to confirm the two voices in this duet song.

There are four earlier songs that are parodied in this song. Based on lyrics, they are listed below,

“prem ke taange pe mein udd jaaun” based on “Udan Khatole Pe Udd Jaaun” from the film ‘Anmol Ghadi’ (1946).

1. “yahaan mein hoon, wahaan tu hai” based on “Yahaan Badlaa Wafaa Ka Bewafaai Ke Siwa Kya Hai” from the film ‘Jugnu’ (1947).

2. “mere kehna maan, kehna maan, dil mein bithaaun” based on “Aana Meri Jaan Meri Jaan Sunday Ke Sunday” from the film ‘Shehnaai’ (1947).

3. “batiyaan banaa ke, prem me phasaa ke, mujhe na bhulaana” based on “Akhiyaan Milaa Ke Jiyaa Bharmaa Ke” from the film ‘Rattan’ (1944).

4. “mohobbat ka tanga chalaa jaaye re” based on “Jawaani Ki Rail Chali Jaaye Re”, another one from the film ‘Shehnaai’ (1948).

So here is one of the earlier creations of Chitragupt, and a real interesting medley of parodies of (then) recent hit songs. And is performed and picturized so well. Enjoy.

Lyrics

prem ke taange pe mein udd jaaun
tere haath na aaun
ha. . .aa. . .an
tere haath na aaun
hey
hey gori

yahaan main hoon
wahaan tu hai
yehi badlaa wafaa ka hai
yahaan main hoon
wahaan tu hai
yehi badlaa wafaa ka hai

samajh kar bhole bhaale
prem ke fande bichhaata hai
tu khud bhookha hai do din ka
tere palley dharaa kya hai

mere kehna maan
kehna maan
dil mein bithaaun
ho ja meharbaan
meharbaan
raani banaaun
kehna maan
kehna maan
dil mein bithaaun
ho ja meharbaan
meharbaan
raani banaaun

batiyaan banaa ke
prem me phansaa ke
mujhe na bhulaana
achhaa ji
batiyaan banaa ke
prem me phansaa ke
mujhe na bhulaana
ho. . .ooo
mujhe na bhulaana
tera jab sahaara ho
phir ye haal hamaara ho
na na na na na na

ho ho ho

mohobbat ka tanga chalaa jaaye re
mohobbat ka tanga chalaa jaaye re
ye chalaa
ye chalaa
ye chalaa jaaye re
mohobbat ka tanga chalaa jaaye re

hey hey hey
mohobbat ka tanga chalaa jaaye re
