The Voice of Mukesh #13
– – – – – – – – – – – – –

We are in the discussion of Mukesh songs from 1946. The last song posted was “Kiye Jaa Pyaar, Kiye Jaa Pyaar” from the film ‘Raajputani’. The second Mukesh song from this film, which is a duet with Hamida Banu – “Jaa Parwaane Jaa. . .”, is already posted on this blog. These two cover the songs by Mukesh for this film.

Today I present another rarity which was not yet available online. This song is from the 1946 film ‘Raseeli’. This film is a social drama produced under the banner of Jai Bharat Pictures, Bombay. The main star cast includes Radharani, Sushil Kumar, Kanhaiyyalal, Ramesh Gupta, Anant Prabhu, Ranibala, Meghmala, Shanti Devi, Ramlal, Shamlal etc.

The director and the music director for this film is the same person –Hanuman Prasad. There are 10 songs in this film. The lyrics for eight of the songs of this film are written by Ghaafil Harnaalvi. The remaining two are from the pen of Hanuman Prasad himself. This particular song is written by him. This could well be a rare combination of the same individual
responsible for lyrics, music and film direction for the same film.

This is an intriguing song, with an intriguing set of lyrics. From the tone of the words, it appears to be a song of sadness, coming from, or sung for, disappointment in love. The song also has interwoven threads of philosophy of life – on one hand professing the futility of everything in life, and also saying that the only one thing will remain in this world is the name. Good name if the associated person has done good deeds in his lifetime, and bad name if the person has only bad deeds to his credit.

Besides the words, another intriguing thing is the singing voices in this song. The Geet Kosh, as well as the Mukesh Geet Kosh identify two voices in this song – one is of Mukesh, and the second singer is identified as Narayan. Now this name, as a singer, is new for me. I request other knowledgeable readers to please provide some information for this artist.

The other somewhat difficult thing about this song is that I have not been able to determine which lines are sung by which singer. The Mukesh Geet Kosh identifies the second antaraa starting with “na wo ram rahey. . .” being in the voice of Narayan. But as I listen to this song, it is difficult to distinguish the two voices. Maybe my own shortcoming, and I would request other readers to please help to confirm this.

The recording of this audio clip is not very good quality. It has some peripheral noises, indicating that this particular item may have been re-recorded more than once. But being a rare song, it is still a relief that this much is available.

So listen to this very early sound of Mukesh’s voice, not yet close to what we are more familiar with.

Song-Aagaaz chala anjaam chala (Raseeli)(1946) Singer-Mukesh, Narayan, Lyrics-Hanuman Prasad, MD-Hanuman Prasad

Lyrics

agaaz chalaa anjaam chalaa
wo rota hua naakaam chalaa
wo rota hua nakaam chalaa
chalaa chalaa
chalaa chalaa
wo pyaar bhari raaton se alag
wo pyaar bhari raaton se alag
wo madhur madhur baaton se alag
wo madhur madhur baaton se alag
gham liye huye gham-khwaar tera
gham liye huye gham-khwaar tera
dil bech ke bhi bedaam chalaa
dil bech ke bhi bedaam chalaa
chalaa chalaa
chalaa chalaa

na wo Ram rahey na wo Seeta rahi
na wo Ram rahey na wo Seeta rahi
na wo Lakshman aur na wo Raavan rahaa
na wo Lakshman aur na wo Raavan rahaa
jo yahaan kiya wo yahin raha
jo yahaan kiya wo yahin raha
sang Raghukul ka bas naam chala
sang Raghukul ka bas naam chala
chalaa chalaa
chalaa chalaa

dil chhod ke jo armaan chalaa
dil chhod ke jo armaan chalaa
munh mod tera mehmaan chalaa
munh mod tera mehmaan chalaa
wo ishq nahin ek hansi hui
wo ishq nahin ek hansi hui
radhe rooth tera ghanshyam chalaa
radhe rooth tera ghanshyam chalaa
chalaa chalaa
chalaa chalaa

agaaz chalaa anjaam chalaa
wo rota hua nakaam chalaa
chalaa chalaa
chalaa chalaa

Hi,
I recently came across an article in one of our local newspapers about a person who has good collections of rare songs from 1930s to 1970. It came out in “Star of Mysore” which is local publication in Mysore, Karnataka. The person’s name is Parathasarathy. He has shared his mobile number and has given an open invitation to all old songs lovers to contact him in case they want to listen to them. It may be that he is even willing to share them. His number is +9191645 57282. (I have not tried calling him myself as I regard myself as a child opening its eyes in this field just recently.) But it should be a genuine case as the paper is a reputed one.

I have read many times in this blog that you people are looking for some unavailable songs, so thought of sharing this particular information with you all. Hope somebody finds it useful.

Let me know if anybody is interested in reading the entire article, I can mail it.

Thanks for sharing this very important information. Yes, we are always on the lookout for rare songs that may not be easily available. There are a few collectors who have good collections of rare songs. But there are rarities that are still being searched.

My email id is skapur@bol.net.in. Please mail me this article, I shall really appreciate it.

Thanks once again for this connect.

Thanks and regards
