O bhoolne waale main tujhe kaise bhula doon

“Door Koi Gaaye. . .”

The voice of these words has now gone away very far from us, to probably sing at and regale the ‘mehfils’ in heavens.

This was the first response I got from Khyati ji earlier in the day. It was with a very heavy and sad heart that I sent out the messages in the morning today, after getting an email from Raju Bhartan ji early morning today, informing about the passing away of Shamshad Begum. And the responses that I have received from many of our friends have all been of sadness and shock.

She was 94, she was not very mobile, she had been not keeping well for sometime. But still, the essence of the presence of such a person is always a comfort and a reinforcement of faith in the things that are dear to our hearts.

The representatives of a peerless era are slowly fading away. As one looks back on the road, far back in the distance there is a grand reel that keeps the images and sounds of this music alive, but the lamps showing the way are slowly being shut down. It almost seems as if darkness will fully consume this path that we look back upon, and the distant glimpses of this reel will disappear from our visions.

But the memories remain. As one poet has said

yaadon ke chiraagon ko jalaaye rakhnaa
jaane kis mod pe jeevan ki shaam ho jaaye

Seems as if the dusk is closing upon us. It is time to emblazon the memories of these sounds and this music, and let there be a shining splendor all the way back to the past.

In our culture they say, sound is eternal. It never goes away. It may blend with the cosmos, but it remains, forever. And this very thought was the response from another friend. ‘Long Live Her Songs’, he said. And that is indeed another comforting thought. And the message from Raja ji said “. . . her songs will remain with us forever.” This music, these songs continue to be with us. And they will see us through to the end of eternity.

Shamshad Begum, a very long innings, 1919 to 2013. And a wholesome treasure of gems is her legacy. I am sure, she is in august company, where she is now. The sound does come, from far, far away.

Yes, she is singing.

I can tell you.

“Door Koi Gaaye, Sun Ye Sunaaye. . .”

“O Bhoolne Waale Main Tujhe Kaise Bhulaa Doon”

A wonderful sound of a sad remembrance, with a promise that the memories will always be kept alive.

This song is from the film ‘Pagli’ (1943). The music is by Gobind Ram. The lyricist is not credited. A melancholia of memories and remembrance, for the day that is today, the day of departure of this doyenne of voices from the Golden Era. Shamshad Begum. RIP.

Song-O bhoolne waale main tujhe kaise bhulaa doon(Pagli)(1943) Singer-Shamshad Begam, Lyrics-Melaram Wafa, MD-Gobindram

Lyrics

o bhoolne waale main tujhe kaise bhulaa doon
o bhoolne waale main tujhe kaise bhulaa doon
o bhoolne waale
o bhoolne waale main tujhe kaise bhulaa doon
o bhoolne waale

tum bhool gaye pyaar mein doobi huyi baaten
tum bhool gaye pyaar mein doobi huyi baaten
bharpoor jawaani ki umangon bhari raaten
bharpoor jawaani ki umangon bhari raaten
armaan bhare dil pe mohabbat ki wo ghaaten
armaan bhare dil pe mohabbat ki wo ghaaten
seene mein wo chhaale
o bhoolne waale main tujhe kaise bhulaa doon
o bhoolne waale

tum prem ke bandhan ko piyaa tod gaye ho
tum prem ke bandhan ko piyaa tod gaye ho
sapnon ko basaa kar mere mukh mod gaye ho
sapnon ko basaa kar mere mukh mod gaye ho
majdhaar main naiyyaa meri kyun chhod gaye ho
majdhaar main naiyyaa meri kyun chhod gaye ho
maujon ke hawaale
o bhoolne waale main tujhe kaise bhulaa doon
o bhoolne waale
