Qismat ne hamen majboor kiyaa

Posted on: April 24, 2013

This article is written by nahm, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor of this blog.

Long ago during weddings in the family, couple of my aunts who were fond of singing, would start this singing session, among ladies. There were a few peppy songs, but I am remmbering a couple of songs now like ‘chhod baabul ka ghar mohe pi ke nagar’ from Baabul’ (1950) and ‘baalam se milan hogaa sharmaane ke din aaye’ from ‘ Chaudhvi ka chand ‘. They would sing it in chorus in Shamshad Begum style. They probabaly had no inkling that the song from Baabul is a sad song, and song from ‘Chaudhvi ka chand’ is by Geeta Dutt.

Today we have received the sad news that the inimitable Shamshad Begum is no more with us. Just last sunday on 14th April, she turned 94. We on the blog had celebrated the birthday, with special posts. Now she has completed her life circle and moved on to the next world. May her soul rest in peace forever.

These eternal voices which touch us everyday from far off. Shamshad Begum was one of those voices, which we have not have the good fortune of knowing from close quarters, but they have touched us on occassion with meloncholy songs, chirpy teasing songs and happily romantic ones. They will remain with us forever.

The song which is presented as a tribute to Shamshad Begum is a solo from film Aankhen (1950). Madan Mohan is the music director and Saraswati Kumar Deepak is lyricist of this sad song. The link was there with me for many months. But the video link is having a very unclear audio. Than luckily I found an audio link today, which is god send. It is being sung on screen by Nalini Jaywant.

Song-Qismat ne hamen majboor kiya (Aankh)(1950) Singer-Shamshad Begam, Lyrics-Saraswati Kumar Deepak, MD-Madan Mohan

Lyrics

chup rehna chaahoon oon
reh na sakoon
kuchh kehna chaahon
keh na sakoon
qismat ne hamen
majboor kiyaa
milne ki tamanna
jin se thhi
unn se na milaaya
door kiya
qismat ne hamen
majboor kiya
milne ki tamanna
jin se thhi
unn se na milaaya
door kiya
qismat ne hamen
majboor kiya

ho tum bhi yahaan
aur main bhi yehaan aa aa aa aa
aa aa
ho tum bhi yahaan
aur main bhi yehaan
woh pyaar bhara sansaar kahaan
duniya ne charaag-e-ulfat ko
jalne na diyaa
be-noor kiya
qismat ne hamen
majboor kiya
milne ki tamanna
jin se thhi
unn se na milaaya
door kiya
qismat ne hamen
majboor kiya

ab aahen bhar kar jeena hai
ae ae ae ae ae ae
ab aahen bhar kar jeena hai
aankhon mein aansoo peena hai
bedard zamaane ne dekho
sapnon ke mahal ko choor kiya
qismat ne hamen
majboor kiya
milne ki tamanna
jin se thhi
unn se na milaaya
door kiya
qismat ne hamen
majboor kiya

It is a very very sad day. The last doyenne of the first group of the top playback singers of the 40s has left us thus ending an era. She was one of the top playback singers in the late 40s and 50s but always kept a low profile . She remained a private person and as I saw it in the news, her funeral was also a low key affair probably in keeping with her wishes.

May her soul rest in peace.

I have 78 RPM record of this song which I had played many times in early 70s. It is with a feeling of regret on my part to say that I have not heard this song in the intervening period until today.

This unique vpice has been silenced for ever. Sad to hear the news.

I owe a very large apology to my late friend Shuklaji to whom I made a reference in my comment some days ago. He loved three begums and one banu: respectively Noorjehan, Shamshad, Suraiya, and Lata, not forgetting Rafi Saab. I don’t know how I omitted Noorjehan. Shuklaji would have done unthinkable things if he read my post!!

Shamshad Begum was a brilliant singer who always kept a low profile – How so different from today’s page 3 celebrities who want the world to know every move of them. Here is a list of my 5 fav songs of Shamshad Begum :
