Today (29 april 2013) is the 14th death anniversary of Kidar Sharma (12 april 1910- 29 april 1999). He was involved in Hindi movies in various capacities, viz Producer, Director, Script/ Screenplay writer, lyricist, actor etc. He is also known as one who gave beaks to several artists who later went on to become big names in Hindi movies. Raj Kapoor, Madhubala, Geeta Bali, Bharat Bhushan, Hansraj Bahl, Snehal Bhatkar, Roshan, Mala Sinha, Tanuja are a few such names who owe their debuts in Hindi movies to Kidar Sharma.
Kidar Sharma himself began his filmy career in Calcutta in early 1930s with Neew Theatres. He began as a painter, but soon began to write lyrics and screenplays. The very first movie where he wrote the screenplay and lyrics was “Devdas” (1935). A dream debut indeed !
Kidar Sharma moved to Bombay in 1940s. By that time he had greaduated to become a director as well. His “Chitralekha” (1941) was a big box office success.
Kidar Sharma turtned a producer with “Neelkamal” (1947) where he gave Raj Kapoor and Madhubala their first breaks as lead actors. In “Suhagrat”(1948), he gave Geeta Bali her first break. So one can say that the careers of Raj Kapoor as well as Shammi Kapoor’s would be wife owe a lot to Kidar Sharma. 🙂
The story of “Jogan” (1950) was developed by Kidar Sharma from a one line story idea given by Chandulal Shah (owner of Ranjit Movietone) and this movie, which other leading directors of the day had refused to touch, became a blockbuster.
Kidar Sharma successfully launched the careers of the son of Prithviraj Kapoor (Raj Kapoor) and the daughter of Shobhana Samarth (Tanuja), but he was unsuccessful in launching the career of his own son Ashok Sharma though movies like “Hamaari Yaad Aayegi” (1961) and “Fariyaad” (1964).
We in this blog are mostly familiar with him as a lyricist. We discussed the 100 th song of Kidar Sharma as a lyricist in the blog (Dekh hamen muskaaye kyun (Duniya Ek Saraai) )on the occasion of his birth anniversary earlier this month.
On the occasion of his death anniversary, here is another song from “Duniya Ek Saraai” (1947). This song is sung by Shamshad Begam. Music is composed by Hansraj Bahl.
Only the audio of this song is available and so it is difficult to say how and on whom this song was picturised. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

Lyrics(Provided by Nitin Shah)
chanda ki chaandni ee ee
na suhaaye to kya karen
haaye kya karen aen aen
chanda ki chaandai
har damm kisi ki yaad sataaye
to kya karen aen
haaye kya karen aen aen
chanda ki chaandni
aankhon se aansuon se
aankhon se aansuon se
tabassum se keh chuke
unki samajh mein baat na aaye
to kya karen aen
haaye kya karen aen
chanda ki chaandni
kaliyon ko baadalon ko
kaliyon ko baadalon ko
sitaron ko de bata
mujhse bhi haal dil ka chhupaaye
to kya karen aen
haaye kya karen aen
chanda ki chaandni
ham hain ke teri raah mein
ham hain ke teri raah mein
aankhen bichha chuke
tu ek baar bhi na bulaaye
to kya karen aen
haaye kya karen aen
chanda ki chaandni
taara tum so gayi
ham diljalon ke neend na aaye
to kya karen aen
haaye kya karen ean
chanda ki chaandni
chanda ki chaandni ee
na suhaaye to kya karen aen
haaye kya karen aen
chanda ki chaandni

The blog once again on the dot for posting an anniversary event of a great personality. Incidently, after several years I happened to log in to internet for listening to SLBC today. There too the legendary programme “puurani filmon ka sangeet” was dedicated to Kidarji. Happened to listen to the penultimate and last songs of the programme . It was Mukesh from “Bawre Nain” and ever so customary K L Saigal from “Zindagi”. Thanks for the post.
