The Voice of Mukesh #19
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
‘Do Dil’ from 1947, turned out to be quite a bonanza for Mukesh. Thus far, the film 1945 ‘Pehli Nazar’ had been good, with four songs by him. In this film, Pt. Gobindram got Mukesh to sing as many as six songs. Three of these are solo, and three are duets – two with Suraiyyaa and one with Rajkumari. Two solos and two duets are already represented on this blog. With this post, I bring to this blog, the third remaining solo song by Mukesh, for your listening pleasure.
The lyrics are by DN Madhok. When it comes to songs of romantic nature, the episodes from the life of Lord Krishna are one of the favorite sources of inspiration for the poets. Even before the films came, in the classical and folk traditions of music, the treatment of the theme of love entailed evocation of the episodes of Rahda – Krishna theme. And when the talking films came, the subject of young romance depended heavily on this theme. There is a fairly large number of songs in Hindi films, based on this theme. And it is not just Hindi films. This theme has been a source of inspiration for poets in all languages of the sub continent. Similar songs appear in films in all Indian languages.
In this song, the young lover is calling out to his beloved, encouraging her to come for their rendezvous, making an excuse of fetching water. On a careful listen, one can realize that this is a pretty difficult song to compose and sing. The metre is not consistent. The melody is flowing, but still it varies from line to line. And yet, the overall effect is so beautiful. The credit goes to both the music director and the singer.
So listen to this rare melody, and enjoy.
(Note: There is one line in the second antaraa that I have not been able to clearly decipher. I request other readers to please help identify the correct words.)
