Remembering RD Burman on his 74th birth anniversary today.
RD Burman, the prince of the music composers in the 1970s and 80s, his music is considered to be the most significant factor behind the exceptional success of Asha Bhosle and Kishore Kumar in those decades. Starting his career with ‘Chhote Nawaab’ (1961), he has no other film to his credit as a music director till 1965, when he scored the music for ‘Bhoot Bangla’ and ‘Teesra Kaun’. But the phenomenal launch to his career would be in 1966, when he scored the songs for Nasir Hussain’s ‘Teesri Manzil’ – there was no looking back after that. If we take 1965 as the true starting point in his career, then from that year to 1994, when he passed away, he had scored music for more than 330 films. In an active career of three decades, that makes for an average of more than 10 films in a year, which is an extraordinary pace for a single person.
After the 1961 film ‘Chhote Nawaab’, when his career attained some regularity starting in 1965, his filmography shows that he has done two films per year, till 1969. This number shot up to 6 films in 1970 and then to 11 films in 1971. Then onwards, there was no stopping the RDB juggernaut, as many film writers have termed his career. One of the last of the old guard music directors who had a strong grounding in the Indian classical music, his success of 1970s and 80s is attributed to his ability to synchronize his compositions with the changing mores of the culture, the audience and the film industry itself. It was in the late 80s and the early 90s, that he found that the changes that he was trying to keep in sync with, were moving even faster than his taste, and the juggernaut slowed down.
This charming melody is from the 1967 film, ‘Chandan Ka Palna’. Produced under the banner of Aarzoo Films, Bombay, this film is a social family drama directed by Ismail Memon. The star cast is very familiar and very impressive – Meena Kumari, Dharmendra, Mehmood, Mumtaz, Durga Khote, Shabnam, Nazeer Hussain, Dhumal, Bipin Gupta, Mukri, Abhi Bhattacharya, Asit Sen, Jerry, Kamal Mohan, Nazeer Kashmiri.
The songs of this film are penned by Anand Bakshi. The melody by RDB has an endearing quality, and has the flavor of the simple classical notes that make it so hummable. On screen, the song is performed by Mumtaz and a group of friends, who are teasing Meena Kumari about the fact that she has just lost her heart to someone. It is a fun song and Meena Kumari herself also participates in the singing. The voices are those of Lata Mangeshkar and Usha Mangeshkar. The director has not been consistent in using these two voices on the characters on the screen, but discounting this aspect, this is a very pleasing teasing song. Enjoy.

Lyrics
kis kaaran
kaamini sharmaaye
koi jaane
jaane to batlaaye
ho kis kaaran
kaamini sharmaaye
koi jaane
jaane to batlaaye
ui mar gayee ab kya hoga bol tu
bhed na mere sakhi khol tu
hoo ooo ooo
ui mar gayee ab kya hoga bol tu
bhed na mere sakhi khol tu
hoo oooo
taaron ki chhaaon taley
nadiya pe shaam dhaley
haaye duniya se chori chori
jiyaa de aayee gori
kajra hai roothaa huaa
gajra hai toota huaa
kajra hai roothaa huaa
kis kaaran
kis kaaran
kaamini sharmaaye
koi dekhe
samjhe kya haaye
ab bolo
kis kaaran
kaamini muskaaye
koi jaane
jaane to batlaaye
ui mar gayee ab kya hoga bol tu
bhed na mere sakhi khol tu
hoo ooo ooo
ui mar gayee ab kya hoga bol tu
bhed na mere sakhi khol tu
hoo oooo
yun bann tthann ke wo
guzri chaman se wo
haaye bhanware pukaaren usey
chheden bahaaren usey
hontth hain phoolon jaise
nain hain jhoolon jaise
hontth hain phoolon jaise
kis kaaran
kis kaaran
kaamini ghabraaye
koi bulbul
aashiq na ho jaaye
kis kaaran
kaamini sharmaaye
koi jaane
jaane to batlaaye

After death of Geeta Bali Shammi was morose and dejected. Still he very reluctantly heard RD tunes who was appointed MD against his wishes at his home I think. Shammi liked the mukhdas of few songs and RD was in; never to look back again. The music had several innovations which were never tried out earlier.
