Here is a very melodious song from film Saqi-1952, sung by the inimitable Lata with chorus. The Music Director is C Ramchandra.
Somehow, I seem to get entangled in C Ramchandra’s songs of the 50s. But I am not complaining, because C Ramchandra +Lata+ 1950’s song = a feast of Melody. All this + Chitalkar in the song is icing on the cake, surely ! But today it is only the cake, without icing.
C Ramchandra not only gave melodious music, but also sang songs as Chitalkar which became very popular. Some of his songs are so popular that even the new Generation starts dancing on them. Several of such songs have been made into Remixes.
Chitalkar was a good singer, but his songs became famous only when he sang in his own films. He sang many songs under the music direction of other composers, but none of those ever become popular. He sang for others in Jwar Bhata-44(Anil Biswas), Lal Haveli-44(Meer sahab), Babujee-50(P.Ramakant), Apni Chhaya-50(Husnlal-Bhagatram), Baaraati-54(Roshan), Samrat-54 and Lagan-55(Hemant Kumar), Faisla-65(Usha Khanna) and Chhaila Babu-67(Laxmikant Pyarelal).
His voice was ordinary, simple, flat and he sang in low tone. His solo and duets-in his own compositions-became popular because of his music, which suited his voice.
After Retirement, C Ramchandra kept himself busy with his own Music Academy. Along with Vasant Desai, he was involved in Government’s “Ek sur Ek Taal” programme for school children in Maharashtra and he used to tour in smaller places. He also did stage shows like “Bhulaya na bane.” He was fond of reading books too.
Some producers still used to contact him, but he used to express his inability to work in their movies. He tells about a Madras producer who came to meet him- ” I asked him,’how many songs will there be?’ he said,’ 2 or 3, but if you want, we can have even 4 songs also’. I said,’ If you keep at least 10 songs, I can consider your offer.’ He said,’ Anna, for 10 songs, where is the time for the Hero ? He has to do fighting, Group Dancing and also acting !’ ”
Here are some questions and answers from an interview during his retirement-
Q- Do you feel sorry that a particular film songs did not become popular ?
A- Yes. Yasmin. only 3 songs, Bechain nazar, Mujh pe ilzam bewafai ka and Tum apni yad bhi became hits. The kind of hard work I had put for that film was not justified.( Incidentally, Yasmin was a Musical pictures Film,a company floated by Naushad and Kardar).
Q- According to you what is the secret of the success of Albela-51 songs ?
A- Common people identified themselves with the simple Hero. Moreover all the songs were ‘Singable’.
Q- What is your opinion about today’s music ?
A- From what I hear, it is better that I am out of the Industry. I heard that the producer, Director, hero and the Music Directors Team sit together to pass a Song. It is nothing short of 10 persons producing One child !. Film music is not a matter of ” Public Exercise”. In our times, there was no interference of anyone in the work and no composer worth his salt tolerated it.
Q- What came first for you, the tune or the lyrics ?
A- I have always tuned the Lyrics. I fail to understand how it can be the other way round. If Dilip Kumar says,” I will act this way. Now write my dialogues accordingly”, how will it be ? Is it Logical ?
After all, what is composing. Giving tune to the lyrics. So it is always a full lyric and then the Tune.
C Ramchandra was such a personality on whom one can write reams of paper. For the time being, let us enjoy his wonderfully composed Lata song from “Saaqi”(1952). It is picturised on Cuckoo and others.

daanv bade tedhe hain haseenon ki chaal ke
nazron ki pyaas ko door se bujhaaiye
keejiye nazaaraa door door se ae
keejiye ishaaraa door door se ae
keejiye nazaaraa door door se
paas nahin aaiye,
haath naa lagaaiye
keejiye nazaaraa door door se ae
keejiye ishaaraa door door se ae
keejiye nazaaraa door door se

It was dream/fetish to emulate/imitate Talat voice. Hear the song of Azad duet with Lata kitna haseen hai mausam. To some extent he even succeeded
I know his assistant who generally visit Mahila Sabhagrah, Parle East (and recounts many anecdotes of CR) where every Sunday evening one of their members play about 35 rare songs on CD audio player from 4-7pm giving comments after every song. About 80 people attending including assistant MD of famous MDs also give their views. Its a literally feast for the rasiks.
