Aag chhidak gayi chaandni

Posted on: August 18, 2013

“Aagosh” (1953) is by now an obscure movie. This movie was a Nihal Films Production. It was directed by R D Mathur. The movie had Nasir Khan, Nutan, Shakila, Agha, Leela Misra, S. Nazir, Manoj, Menka etc in it.

Seven songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Here is the eighth and final song from “Aagosh” (1953). This song is as obscure as the movie itself. It is sung by Meena Kapoor. The interesting lyrics of this song likening the “chaandni” of moon to fire, is written by Shailendra. Music is composed by Roshan.

I am stuck at a word in the lyrics though. The word sounds like “gir” gayi, though the word does not make sense to me, it should be “jal” gayi or some other word instead. I request our knowledgeable readers with keener ears to tell us what word this could be.
PS-Now Sudhir ji has provided the correct lyrics. Listening to this song from a clear recording, he points out that the word is “jar” gayi, a colluquial form of jal gayi. He has made some other corrections to the lyrics as well, in addition to providing the Hindi script lyrics of the song.

With this song, “Aagosh” (1953), despite being an obscure movie with forgotten songs, now has all its songs covered in the blog.

Song-Aag chhidak gayi chaandni (Aagosh)(1953) Singer-Meena Kapoor, Lyrics-Shailendra, MD-Roshan

Lyrics

aag chhidak gayi chaandni
mere gore badan pe
o mere komal man pe
haay aaj main
jar gayi
jar gayi
jar gayi re
aag chhidak gayi chaandni
mere gore badan pe
o mere komal man pe
haay aaj main
jar gayi
jar gayi
jar gayi re

lehron ke sang chham chham naachen
kirnon ki goriyaan
dheere se koi kheenche dil ke
pardon ki doriyaan
jhoom ke kya kehta hai aasmaan
na samjhe mere saajna
haay aaj main
jar gayi
jar gayi
jar gayi re
aag chhidak gayi chaandni
mere gore badan pe
o mere komal man pe
haay aaj main
jar gayi
jar gayi
jar gayi re

raat suhaani chupke se
kuchh kaanon mein keh gayi
mere dil ki baat bedardi
dil mein hi reh gayi
taare bhi kar gaye ishaare
hanse madmast nazaare
haay aaj main
jar gayi
jar gayi
jar gayi re
aag chhidak gayi chaandni
mere gore badan pe
o mere komal man pe
haay aaj main
jar gayi
jar gayi
jar gayi re

chaand ki sheetal chhaon mein
sab duniya so gayi
meri duniya pyaar ke
sapnon mein kho gayi
baithe hain wo aag lagaa ke
magar daaman ko bacha ke
haay aaj main
jar gayi
jar gayi
jar gayi re
aag chhidak gayi chaandni
mere gore badan pe
o mere komal man pe
haay aaj main
jar gayi
jar gayi
jar gayi re

I am a big fan of Meena Kapoor. What a lovely song, a hidden gem for sure.

I have been watching a few past posts and found that Nasir Khan acted in quite a few films that are now obscure. With Nutan in this, no less!

Film Aghosh-1953, was a Nihal Film corporation presentation, produced by a pair of R.Vashudev and K.Jaisinghani.Directed by R D Mathur,it had music by Roshan and the lyricists were Indivar, udhav Kumar, kaif Irfani and Shailendra for 8 songs. The cast was Nutan,Nasir Khan,Leela Mishra,Iftikhar,Shakila, krishnakant etc. The story was-

Meera(Nutan) loves Ashok(Nasir khan).her step mother(Leela Mishra) wants Ashok to marry Seth ji’s daughter Rani(Shakila). Mira is accused of theft and insulted.Rani tries to woo Ashok, but he does not respond. mahinder(Iftikhar) a village crook wants to marry Rani and get all her wealth. he plans many plots for this, however Mira and Ashok foil his every attempt. Mahinder decides to kill both of them learning about his plan,Ashok alerts police, who come at the right time and save them and capture mahinder. Rani then magnanimously, and to the utter displeasure of Leela Mishra, gets mira and Ashok married.

Some corrections… Nutan is a replaced Child.. like in Munimji.. almost same story, with the genders changed…. the maid servant places her child (later Shakila) and takes away Nutan (the Rai bahadur’s daughter) at her home… so it’s not step mother though behavior is similar.. and Shakila doen’t really has change of heart.. Iftekar wants Shakila.. Shakila wants Nasir, Nasir wants Nutan. So Shakila (Rani) wants Nutan killed and Iftekar (Mohan) wants Nasir killed, for the same purpose. In that melee, to save Nasir (not Nutan), Shakila is killed. A very interesting way.. Iftekar tries to open the gates of the dam so that the two are washed away in flood water. Shakila tries to stop that gate.. and I suppose her neck is broken,. In the final fight the police doesn’t come rather saving is by Agha.. the friend of Ashok (Nasir)… and later the Rai bahadr and others … Mahinder (Iftekar) in the melee falls down the rock and dies.. .. Interestingly this is the first movie.. one could see the glimpses of Nutan what she would become later.. she has already lost the zero-features of Humlog and Nagina, and the face has started filling up and the acting prowess too is visible quite a few times.

gir gayi seems to be right !

‘lehron ke sang chham chham naache
kirnon ki doriyaan
dheere se koi kheenche dil ke pardon ki doriyaan’

‘taare bhi kar gaye ishaare
thhake madmast nazaare’

Atul ji,

A lovely reminder, and another favorite posted today. Thanks so much.

Regarding the corrections, I have cross checked with the copy of this song in my collection, which is a much more clear audio. The repeated phrase is ‘jar gayi’, which is a variant of ‘jal gayi’ – I got burnt. This word matches with the sense of this verse – “aag chhidak gayi chaandni”.

Other corrections suggested by Avinash ji are correct, except for the following.

1. The line ‘kirnon ki doriyaan’ should read ‘kirnon ki goriyaan’

2. The line “thhake madmast nazaare”, should read “hanse madmast nazaare”.

There are a couple of other minor corrections also. I have sent you the corrected lyrics in Hindi and English on email.
