This article is written by Arunkumar Deshmukh, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

This is a song from the film Dil ki Rani-1947, and the singer is SHYAM SUNDER, for the film’s Music Director S.D.Burman.

This Shyam Sundar was different from the music director Shyam Sundar aka Shyam sunder Gabaa, the famous music director.

As per an extract from a book published in 1938, SHYAMSUNDER was introduced by Krishna Film Co., as a Child Star, who could also sing.

His first film was Fashionable India-1935 in which he sang 1 song also.

From 1935 to 1955, he acted in 37 films. He sang about 15 songs in 8 films during his career.

As he was operating ,when the famous composer Shyamsunder (Gabaa) was also in the film industry, sometimes there was a confusion that composer Shyamsunder acted and sang in films, which was not the case.

They were two different persons.

Here is the Filmography of Actor/singer Shyamsunder,as per HFGK-

Note- I have personally checked each entry of Volume 1, 2 and 3 to get these film names. It took me two days. It looks that after 1955 either this actor must have retired or died. No information is available on him anywhere.

Music Director Shyamsunder died on 15-7-1952 itself, while the singer/actor Shyamsunder continued upto 1955,which again confirms that both were different.

DIL KI RANI-1947,a Amar jyoti pictures film, directed by Mohan Sinha(father of actress Vidya Sinha). It was produced by P.V.Banker. Music Director was S.D.Burman. The cast was Raj Kapoor, Madhubala, Munshi Khanjar, Shyamsunder etc.

The story of Dil Ki Rani was a simple one which can be summed up as Lovers meet, quarrel, meet and marry. Nothing new in it, except that Raj Kapoor was just about 22-23 year old-looking more like Shammi Kapoor of Tumsa Nahin Dekha- and Madhubala was just 15-16 year old. This was their second successive film after Kidar Sharma’s’ Neel kamal’ earlier in the same year. Actually the story was so week that the audience had to only look at the stars and listen to the songs rather that look at the story. The actor Shyamsunder had acted and sung songs in this film. His role was that of the Hero’s sidekick and friend who works as a composer to his poetry.

Madhav(Raj Kapoor) or simply Madho as he is called all through the film is a famous Poet, who sings on Radio. In fact the film starts with Raj Kapoor’s song on the radio. This song was even actually sung by Raj Kapoor himself in his own voice. From his voice and singing one can get an inkling of his understanding of music so well in later years. His friend and composer is Banke(Shyamsunder). His songs are heard by Rajkumari(Madhubala) who is the only daughter of a Publishing magnate who runs a newspaper also. She suggests to her father that Madhav’s poems can be printed in their paper to increase its sale. Father Thakur Sangram Singh(Badri Prasad) likes the idea and calls Madhav home. Rajkumari and Madhav promptly fall in love, sing songs and do all other mandatory things for lovers. When the father learns about this,he naturally opposes this alliance as Madhav is a poor person. So, Rajkumari is banned from meeting Madhav. But looking at his daughter’s sufferings, the father apparently allows them to meet but asks his Munshi(Munshi Khanjar) to creat misunderstandings and difficulties in their path. Despite all this they succeed in their love, so finally the father relents. The Lovers unite and the happiest person, I guess, is the audience for coming to the end of this boring film. No wonder this film was soon forgotten except for Raj kapoor’s song for historical purpose.

Now let us see and enjoy the acting and singing of actor-singer Shyamsunder. The song is filmed on a very young looking, but awkward Raj Kapoor and Shyam Sundar, not to be confused with music director Shyam Sundar. Enjoy….

loot liya loot liya
loot liya loot liya
loot liya dil chitchor ne

meethhe bol bol
nainon mein pyaar ghol
meethhe bol bol
nainon mein pyaar ghol
man ke duwaar khol
man ke duwaar khol
aaya ithhlaa ke
roop chhalka ke
ek ek boond ko mohe chataa ke
loot liya
ek ek boond ko mohe chataa ke
loot liya
dil chitchor ne
loot liya loot liya
loot liya loot liya
loot liya dil chitchor ne

phool hanse aur kare ishaare ae
pyaar karo bharpoor
kaanta pahredaar keh raha
door raho ji door
kaante ne aake
aankhen dikhaa ke
maar daala
maara daala
mujhko dara ke
loot liya
maar daala
maara daala
mujhko dara ke
loot liya
dil chitchor ne
loot liya loot liya
loot liya loot liya
loot liya dil chitchor ne
chitchor ne
