The Voice of Mukesh #27

O what a gem this song is. I tracked this song as part of this series, and heard it for the first time recently. Probably the most beautiful song with the theme of ‘Mere Sapnon Ki Raani’. There is the iconic ‘Mere Sapnon Ki
Raani, Roohi Roohi Roohi’
song from the film ‘Shahjehaan’ (1946), sung by Saigal Sb. After 39 years came another song that took the country by storm –“Mere Sapnon Ki Rani Kab Aayegi Tu”(‘Aradhana’, 1969). In between and thereafter, there are a few other songs with this theme, none so notable as these. And then we have this song in 1948, a rendering by Mukesh, in my opinion, which is simply the best of the lot.

The film is ‘Veena’, produced and directed by JP Advani, under the banner of Jagat Pictures. The star cast includes Sulochana Chatterjee, Veera, Rehman, Hemawati, Leela Mishra, Girdhari, Yakub. The song is written by Narendra Sharma, and the music is by Anil Biswas. Given the list of actors, one can guess that this song could have been picturized on either Rehman or Yaqub.

Enjoy this lovely expression of calling out to the beloved. The words are lovely, and of course the voice that has sung it, it has made all the
difference of what this song has become. Scintillating and charming.

mere sapnon ki raani re
tu laakhon mein lassaani re

O the ruling sovereign of my dreams
Your sweet voice
Is a one in a million joy

(NOTE: lassaani = sweet words; also one whose voice and words are sweet and soothing)

meri akhiyan ki araj sun jaa
nazar uljhi hai mat suljhaa

Please, o please
Listen to the supplication of my eyes
Let them be entangled
O please do not move your eyes away

jo yun bach bach kar rehna hai
kyun naahak preet jagaani re

Say, should we light this warmth of endearment
If you wish to keep away
From me, like this

reejh gaye nainaa baalon par
lagaa dil til ban gaalon par

Ah, my eyes
They are so enchanted by you silken tresses
And my heart
It has settled on your cheeks
Like and endearing beauty spot

idhar mera chaah bharaa mann hai
udhar teri bhari jawaani re

With me
Is my heart
So full of longing for you
With you
It is your brimming enticing youth
Enamoring me

mera dil gulshan tu hai bahaar
mere armaanon ki sardaar

You are the season of spring
For the garden of my heart
You are my primary hope, the epitome of my yearnings

(NOTE: sardaar – chief, primary, the best, the epitome)

aaj madbhari chaandni mein
ye kaisi aana kaani re

Ah, this moonlight today
It is so enchanting, so exciting
Why do you dither and hesitate
(To be near together)

लगा दिल तिल बन गालों पर
लगा दिल तिल बन

ओsss ओss ओs

ओsss ओss ओs

Sudhirji,
Thanks for the song. This “Voice of Mukesh” series has been a journey to another world.
This song yet again reminds us of the earthy voice of Mukesh. What a rendition by Mukesh.

Sudhir ji,
Thank you very much for this sweet but almost forgotten song which I heard after a long time. Your beautiful english translation of lyrics will be a boon for those who may not be very familiar with some of the uncommon urdu words.
May I be allowed to very humbly point out one small thing?
Just to fit it in with the tune of the song, the first syllabus of the last but one word in the second line of the song has been pronounced by Mukesh without accent (and thereby rendering it into a monosyllabic rather than a bisyllabic). It is not a mispronunciation but a musical licence.
The proper way to write it in Devnagri script should be “लासानी”.
Its exact meaning is like this: (ला= नहीं, सानी = बराबरी, तुलना ).( Just like Lajawab = No answer)
Hence, लासानी = Without comparison, unparallelled, incomparable.
Hope you do not take amiss my above intrusion.
Thanks again for taking the trouble for posting a rare song for the listeners.
Regards,
Avadh Lal
