The Voice of Mukesh #28
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

And so wrote the scribe – “Yaadon Ka Sahaara Na Hota, Hum Chhod Ke Duniya Chal Dete” .

Thirty seven years to date. The life and the world has moved on, as it always does. It is the everyday drudgery and the process of existence, that makes life continue with what it is. But it is the memories of the sounds of dear ones that make life beautiful, and livable. Memories, that are frozen in time, for they are past and will never be alive and here again today. And yet, these memories live, in the minds, in remembrances, and in the sounds captured in technology. Ah yes, it is these sounds that make is possible to exist, with the drudgery of everyday existence.

Remembering Mukesh today (27 august 2013) on the anniversary of his passing away. A young life, so sadly snuffed out in a distant land. A voice was silenced forever.

The brooding voice, carrying the genuine-ness and sincerity, that is in a class all by itself. One of the handful of voices that became the essential background to the on screen performances. After considering Kishore Kumar for it, Sachin Da eventually got Mukesh to sing the pensive song of fateful resignation – the ‘bidaai’ (send off) of the daughter from her father’s home in ‘Bambai Ka Babu’ (1960). It is now unimaginable to think of “Chal Ri Sajni Ab Kya Soche” to be anything other than in the voice of Mukesh.

Film and music writers have occasionally commented that 9 out of 10 songs rendered by Mukesh and Talat, ended up being popular hits, and that is why it seems that their body of work must have been more than what we know it to be. Yes, today there is a level of cataloging that has ascertained a specific number of songs by each artist. And hence we know that there is about 900 film songs that exist in the voice of Mukesh. But wait, there is still a lacuna in this data compilation that may yet mean that these numbers are not final. The lacuna is the incompleteness of data, especially for the decades of 1930s and 1940s. There exists gaps in source documents, that have resulted in blank spaces where detailed information for specific films is probably missing. And in this missing information are hiding some more songs that are unattributed. Once we are able to track and acquire, more information it is possible we shall be extending the current known lists of songs by specific artists.

This song presented today, is one such example. For me, the trail started when our dear Sadandand ji sent me an email message, with a YouTube link for this song. The song seemed all too new and unfamiliar, and it took me a just a few minutes of browsing through the Geet Kosh to understand the reason. The film to which this song belongs is a 1948 film – ‘Phool Aur Kaante’. On checking the Geet Kosh I find that of the 12 songs in this film, the name of the singer is listed for only 5 of them. There are seven songs for which the name of the singer is not known. And this song is one of them. Now that we have the actual song with us, we know that it is sung by Mukesh.

After having got this information from Sadanand ji, I wrote to Harish ji Raghuvanshi, the compiler of the Mukesh Geet Kosh (MGK). And Harish ji confirms to me that this song does not exist in the current edition of the MGK. In fact he has shared with me a list of about a dozen songs, which are sung by Mukesh but they do not appear in the MGK. I shall be sharing these songs here, in due course.

The music for this film is composed by Dada Chandekar, and the songs have been written by Vishwamitra Adil. The song itself is such a lively exposition of youth and its stories. The words and the melody are a surprise. And so is the rendition by Mukesh. I am sure you will love this song on the first hearing itself. Listen to this charming discovery and be enchanted by a completely different flavor of Mukesh.

And yes, thanks be to dear Sadanand ji, for starting this trail of discovery. Enjoy.

Lyrics

balle balle
balle balle jawaani bal khaaye
balle balle
balle balle jawaani lehraaye
balle balle
balle balle jawaani bal khaaye
balle balle
balle balle jawaani lehraaye
balle balle

din raat chhupaayen gharwaale

darwaazon par daalen taale

phi bhi na jawaani baaz aaye
balle balle
phi bhi na jawaani baaz aaye
balle balle
balle balle jawaani balkhaaye
balle balle
balle balle jawaani lehraaye

koi laakh badhaaye ghoonghat ko
koi laakh badhaaye ghoonghat ko
dil kaanpe
dil kaanpe sun kar aahat ko
dil kaanpe
dil kaanpe sun kar aahat ko
chupke se jawaani dass jaaye
balle balle
chupke se jawaani dass jaaye
balle balle
balle balle jawaani bal khaaye

balle balle jawaani lehraaye

de taane apne begaane

wo dil ki
wo dil ki baaten kya jaanen

wo dil ki baaten kya jaanen
jalti agni ko bhadkaaye
balle balle

balle balle
balle balle jawaani bal khaaye

Sudhirji,

A befitting, rare and relatively unknown song on the legend’s 37th death anniversary.

Many Thanks.

Sudhir ji,
Thanks for this Mukesh song which I heard for the first time.
A simple composition with very few words except the constant refrain of ‘ Balle balle’ and the beats.
But what an effect it has thanks to Mukesh’s deep and sonorous voice.
Looking forward to more of the same.
Regards,
Avadh Lal
