Mere laadle balam tohey raam ki kasam

Posted on: September 5, 2013

This article is written by Arunkumar Deshmukh, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

It is a song from film-SUHAG SINDOOR-1953. It is sung by composer Shailesh Mukherjee for Music Director Suresh Kumar, a joint Music Director of this film.

Many aspirants came to this Mayanagari, that was called Bombay. They came here with dreams in their eyes. Dreams of making it big in the film Industry-as Actors, as Singers, as Composers, as Directors,as this and as that…..

Not everybody’s dream is fulfilled and most aspirants ended up with whatever they got in their careers. Sometimes their latent talents were discovered by others in the industry and they succeeded in entirely different fields than what they had started with…. Like Ashok Kumar, being made an Actor by Himanshu Rai when he had joined Bombay Talkies as a trainee in the photography department…or like Guru Dutt getting a chance from Dev Anand to become a Film Director, when actually he had started as a choreographer…. or as Amiya Chakravarty becoming a Film Director when he had started off as a Canteen Manager in Bombay Talkies…or like Sarvottam Badami of Sagar Studios changing jobs from motor Mechanic to Sound Engineer to a Director of films, who was very successful !!!

Truth is stranger than fiction indeed ! History is replete with examples of most-at least many-Music Directors starting their careers as Singers in films like S D Burman, Anil Biswas, S N Tripathi, Ravi, Chitragupta, Vasant Desai, Sudhir Phadke, Hemant Kumar etc.

There are examples when before becoming Actors, people were something else-entirely different- like Balraj Sahni who was a BBC announcer or Raaj Kumar(jaani) who was a Police inspector in Bombay Police Department.

And then there are examples also of people leaving film industry and doing something entirely different like Actor Singer Ashraf Khan who became a Sufi Saint, or Senior Shashi kapoor who became a Ph.D and taught in an American University or Chandrakant Rai of the Music Director Duo Rai-Frank, doing Mining business in Madhya Pradesh.

One such colourful multifaceted personality was SHAILESH MUKHERJEE, singer of today’s song. Born on 3rd June 1926 in Calcutta, he completed his Matriculation and came to Bombay in 1946 to become a Music Director. He met Anil Biswas-also from Bengal- and got an opportunity to sing in the film Milan-1946. That is how his singing started and he sang in films like Andhon ki Duniya, Banwaasi etc, but his best performance came in Raj Kapoors’s film Aag-1948- a duet with Shamshad Beghum- “Dekh chaand ki ore”.

His dream of becoming a Music Director was still not getting fulfilled, so he kept on singing in Anmol Moti, The last message, Deepak, Aandolan, Samaj, Naya kadam etc.

Finally he became a Music Director , a joint one with Suresh kumar-in the film Suhag Sindoor-1953. Even in this film, his partner made him sing two songs, under his baton ! Anyway, later Shailesh gave music in Parichay and Savera, both in 1958. While recording songs for Parichay, Shailesh played Tabla himself in all the songs. In the film Savera his songs became very popular. Songs like “Chhuppa chhuppi Aagad Baagad jaayi re” by Lata and Manna Dey, ” Nadiya ka pani” by Lata and “Jaane na,Jaane na” by Geeta became quite popular.

Inexplicably, despite good and hit songs, he stopped getting any more films, either as a Music Director or as a singer. So Shailesh changed his gear once again and he became an Actor.

He became Hero in ” Miyaan biwii raazi”-1960, ” Pyaar ki Pyaas”-1961 and ” Monica”-1962. As a Hero he had taken a new name SHRIKANT GAURAV. The films did not click.

When even films stopped coming to him, he left Bombay and returned to Calcutta. Thus, yet another talented artiste had to withdraw with reluctance and disappointment, from this Mayanagari-Bombay Film Industry !

Film SUHAG SINDOOR-1953 had a pair of Music Directors- Shailesh Mukherjee and Suresh Kumar- a neme not many readers can recollect. readers from Gujarat, perhaps, may remember his name as Suresh Kumar Shah who had given musicin some Gujarati films.

Suresh kumar Shah had a four-fold career in films.

FIRST he started his Musical career with a Gujarati film-” Choodi Chandiyo”-1950 and went on to give music in 22 Gujarati films, the last being-Maaru Saasario sona ni khaan-1998.

SECONDly, he paired with other Music Directors-with Shailesh Mukherjee in Suhag Sindoor, with Talwar and Shankar Dasgupta in ‘Hotel’-1956 and only with Talwar in another 11 films, the last film being-“Char Chakram’-1965.

THIRDly, he gave music independently in 11 films, starting with-Jadui Angoothi-1964 and ending with- Waqt se Pehle-1985.

Thus he featured in 22 Gujarati films and 24 Hindi films as a Music Director.

FOURTHly, he gave music in some Marathi films also, like Gharcha Bhedi, Gadbad Ghotala and Kuldeepak etc.

Suresh Kumar Shah died on 30-11-1990

Now let us enjoy the song-“Mere laadle Balam” sung by Shailesh Mukherjee and Geeta Dutt in “Suhag Sindoor”-1953. Bharat Vyas is the lyricist.

tum ho bade hatheele sainyaan
tum ho bade hatheele sainyaan
main hoon bholi bhaali
tum ho bade hatheele sainyaan
tum ho bade hatheele sainyaan
paiyaan padoon tihare
ab to chhodo hamri bainyaan
haaye chhodo hamri bainyaan
mere saanwle
ho mere saanwle sajan
lagi tumse lagan
mera nanha nanha
ho mera nanha nanha jiyra jalaaya na karo

dekho chori chori ankhiyaan ladaya na karo
saasu ji ke saamne bulaaya na karo

tum sang hamne byaah kiya hai
phir kaahe sharmaana
gori phir kaahe sharmaana
tum sang hamne byaah kiya hai
phir kaahe sharmaana

chhodo chhodo
o chhodo chhodo ye sharam
khul jaaye na bharam
gorey haathon mein

mehandi rachaaya na karo
mehandi racha ke yahaan aaya na karo

mere ladle balam tohe ram ki kasam
tohe ho tohe ram ki kasam
dekho chori chori ankhiyaan ladaya na karo
saasu ji ke saamne bulaaya na karo
mere laadle balam
tohe raam ki kasam
tohe
ho tohe ram ki kasam
dekho chori chori ankhiyaan
ladaaya na karo
saasu ji ke saamne bulaaya na karo
