Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Naam hai Jhatpat Mr Jhatpat

This article is written by nahm, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

I was looking for a song of Dev Anand for this Rafi series. Much as I wanted a composition by S. D. Burman to feature here as a typical Dev Anand song, I could not find one which was yet to be posted. What I found instead was this song from the movie “Dushman” (1957). This is a Rafi solo starting with the alphabet ‘N”. On screen Dev Anand is singing this on the streets, with kids in the area following him around. He is in disguise dressed up as a ‘magician’, singing repeatedly ‘main jaadugar Bangal kaa” so as to emphasise his profession.

Once upon a time, ‘magician’ was also a profession, which had its own entertainment value. Now, this field has been reduced to the status of sorcery, with the sole copyright resting with Harry Potter and his sorcerer’s. Really if someone could convince me that the whole series was original and not lifted from the ancient stories from the ‘era of magic ‘. Only the flying carpet is replaced and there is a flying broom, but the concepts remain the same. Anyways, the kids today are as enamoured by the stories of Harry potter as once we were with the stories of pari, shehzaada and jaadugarnis. But we were able to shake off such facinations faster as compared to today’s generation, I feel. Now the children are hooked to one thing till something new takes it place. Technological advancement is not always in favour of progress.

The movie had Usha Kiran as the heroine opposite Dev Anand. I can recall a movie I have seen of these two, i.e. “Patita”, especially the song Kisi ne apna bana ke mujhko. This movie had a few nice songs composed by Shankar Jaikishan, with Hemant Kumar giving playback to Dev Anand in the songs like Yaad kiya dil ne kahaan ho tum.

The song from “Dushman” that I am discussing here is written by P L Santoshi, who was the father of filmmaker Raj Kumar Santoshi. Raj Kumar Santoshi shone as a Director with films like “Daamini” but since has faded away. The music directors are Huslal-Bhagatram. Husnlal Bhagatram are famed for their duets. Hopefully a duet song composed by them will form part of this series in the coming days.

This song may have a sound/ feel like a Johnny Walker song, but the voice is that of Dev Anand, or the voice that Rafi Sahab used for giving playback to Dev Anand. Even Johnny Walker is so far missing in this series and I am hoping to have one of his songs too. This is beginning to feel like I am trying to have my cake (in front of me intact) and eat it too, 🙂 and than distribute the pieces among friends. Not necessarily in that order !

Enough of this nervous chatter, and you all can enjoy this trickster’s song, kids song, disguise song and anokhe bol song. I will quickly move on to next alphabet ‘O’. And you all can wish me ‘Happy juggling’ 🙂 .

Rajkumar Santoshi on father P L Santoshi

My father gave me so much. His death disturbs me even now as I could not give him even one meal from my earned money. He died a sad man in KEM government hospital. He died worried and am sure he must have been so much in pain as we were almost on the street at that time. I remember one Diwali before he died, my father did not have any money and some friend had promised to give him some, so we had gone to his place in Byculla. There was puja happening there and my father is thinking that he has to go from Byculla to Thane where his family is waiting for him to come with the money to buy clothes and firecrackers. So we are sitting there seeing the firecrackers going up into the air and people have started their celebrations whereas ours had not even begun. While he never spoke to me about it, I understood his pain. That is why when someone comes and asks me for money, I always give it as I know that behind one man there is a whole family. Some people don’t even ask due to self pride, but I will always make it a point to give it. My mother died three years back due to cancer and I cry thinking I could not spend as much time with her also. We all live thinking we will live forever, but life suddenly goes away. Even though she lived with me, she would be sitting on the terrace while I would have my discussions inside for three hours. Now I regret not having spent one hour out of those three with her. Even though my work will continue, I cannot get my mom back. We cry only once we don’t have something, but don’t value it when we have it. I have bought this house with a terrace where I can see the stars and feel the breeze which is tax-free but still we do not want to enjoy it. I feel responsible for my family and my team as I know they look at my face and live.
