When Helen appears on the screen, a very automatic thought that crosses the mind is – the playback singer will be Asha Bhosle. Such is the association between the two, that across the decades, most of the Helen dance songs have been crooned by Asha ji. But yes, there are other playback singers also that have sung for Helen on screen, and it will be an interesting category by itself – ‘non Asha Bhosle songs of Helen’. As I was searching for a special song for this post, it is completely by chance that I came across this wonderful peppy number, a Helen mujra song, sung by Usha Timothy. I heard it for the first time last night, and it is one of those matters of falling in love on the first hear.
Wishing a very happy birth anniversary to Usha Timothy ji (for 8th October).
Usha ji was born in Nagpur, in the year 1947, in a family that was very much inclined to music. Her elder brother is an accomplished violinist, and used to work for All India Radio. Another cousin brother taught music at the Khairgarh University (in Madhya Pradesh). Although she had not yet started any formal training in music, she developed a very good singing voice under the influence of her elder sibling, and listening to film music on the radio. She recalls an event from her childhood that gave a strong impetus and encouragement to her aspirations. She was about eight or nine years. A musical show was organized in Nagpur. Her elder brother was one of the organizers, being associated with the local radio station as a musician. A number of film artists and musicians were participating. The troupe was led by the yet to become famous Kalyan ji. Singing stars like Rafi Sb, Manna Dey and Hemant Kumar were part of the program. The troupe had not been able to have any female playback singers join the program. Madhusudan, the elder brother of Usha ji, suggested to Kalyan ji to let her
sing in the program. At first, Kalyan ji agreed, but when he came face to face with the child who was not yet even ten years old, he dismissed the idea. Not to be discouraged, her elder brother tried a different thing. During the interval of the program, he got Usha ji on stage, and she presented the famous song “Rasik Balmaa, Dil Kyun Lagaaya To Se. . .”(‘Chori Chori’, 1956). The audience was bowled over, and Kalyan ji was so impressed that he let her join the program after the interval. That evening proved to be a dream introduction to the industry stalwarts.
At the age of eleven, Usha ji started her formal training in music from Pt Laxman Prasad and Nirmala Devi. And she continued to get invited to musical programs of Kalyan ji, and then also by other troupes led by C Ramchandra and Sardar Hazaara Singh (the famous guitar and Hawaiian guitar expert). And then, moving into playback singing in the films was just the natural next step for her. Her first break, and a very auspicious one, came when Pt. Shivram got her to sing the famous creation of Adi Shankracharya in Sanskrit, the ‘Mahishasurmardini Stotra’ for the film ‘Durga Pooja’ (1962) –“Ae Giri Nandini Nanditmedini Vishwavinodini Nandanute”. But the popular success of her singing came with her next assignment when she joined Rafi Sb to sing “Bura Ho Tera Tujhe Dekh Kar, Kothe Se Mera Pair Fislaa” for the song “Oye Tu Raat Khadi Thi Chhat Pe”. The film – ‘Himalaya Ki God Mein’ (1962), and the music directors – Kalyanji Anandji, who had once dismissed her for being too young in age for a stage performance.
A very interesting aside regarding her participation with the shows of C Ramchandra. The famous patriotic song “Ae Mere Watan Ke Logo”– its first public performance was as a duet by Usha ji and C Ramchandra, at a program for defense services in Ahmedabad, a few months prior to the more well known solo performance by Lata ji in Delhi.
Her career progressed, but expectedly, she remained under the shadow of the stalwart singers of her era. Her Hindi films number a little more than 50. In an interview, she once mentioned that many songs that were originally recorded by her, appeared in other voices, in the final release of the film and records. (NOTE: On reading this comment, my mind goes back to my meeting with Mubarak Begum ji last year in Delhi, where she had also made the very same comment. Interesting phenomena this.)
Usha ji has sung many songs as duets and group songs, but her solo songs are comparatively fewer in number. And so, coming across her solo songs is quite a treasure by itself. The song in this post is from a relatively lesser known film ‘Vidyarthi’ from 1966. The names are mostly unfamiliar. Lyrics are by Madhukar Bihari, and the music compositions are by Babu Singh. The film is an SM Pictures production, directed by Talib Hussain. Amongst the list of actors, there are very few names that are familiar. The list includes Surekha, Trideep, Daisy Irani, Sulochana, Sajjan, Madhukar Bihari, Geeta, Bhagwan Sinha, Heera Mishra, Helen etc. On screen one can identify Sajjan as one of the gentlemen at the mujra performance.
The song however is pleasing music to ears, and the on screen performance by Helen – that is one the one given event of Hindi films, that there will never be any disappointments. Listen to this obscure gem, and enjoy.
Best wishes and greetings to Usha Timothy ji.
