Today’s song is from film Jwala-38. It is sung by Ratnaprabha under the music direction of Dhamman Khan.

Kolhapur or Kalapur in Maharashtra is an area which has given many talented artistes to the Indian Film industry, be it in acting, production, Art direction, Singing, Music or Direction etc. Kolhapur had been an important film production centre in the early era of movies in India. Prabhat Film company, Kolhapur Cinetone, Shalini cinetone, Maharashtra Film company, Huns pictures, Navyug pictures , Prafull pictures and many individual producers made films here which became not only famous but some of them also turned out to be landmark films. After a period this centre came to a halt except for occasional regional Marathi films.

In the early era, Baburao Painter, Bhalji Pendharkar, P K Atre, Master Vinayak, V.Shantaram and others made films here.

Master Vinayak hailed from Kolhapur itself. In those days, Kolhapur, Sangli, Miraj, Hubli, Dharwad, Belgaum, Konkan area and Goa provided many famous artistes to Hindi and Marathi films. Shanta Hublikar, Amirbai and Gauharbai Karnataki,Master Vinayak,Vasant Desai,Singer Desai sisters, V. Shantaram are some of the names that readily come to mind.

Huns pictures was started by Master Vinayak in 1936. It produced many films like Chhaya, Premveer, Dharmaveer, Jwala, Bramhachary, Brandy ki botal, Mera huq, Ghar ki Rani etc.

Noirmally, Vinayak’s films tackled path breaking social topics, but in Jwala, he deviated and handled a period costume drama-Parsi Theatre style and suffered hugh losses from which Huns Pictures never recovered.

The first film of Huns Pictures was Chhaaya, which tackled the topic how a sister is ready to sell herself for her brother’s welfare. The film Jwaala was produced and directed by Master Vinayak himself with music from Dhamman Khan. The film was made in both Marathi and Hindi.

Dhamman Khan makes his debut on this Blog with this song today. Dhamman Khan was one of those giants of classical music who had developed an urge (call it itch) to try their hand at composing film music, do a film or two and return to their own comfort zone again.

Some such other examples are Bhurji Khan(Kurukshetra-33), Ameer saab(Nirdosh abla-35), Nawab Khan(Mirza sahiban-35), Wamanrao Sadolikar(Naganand-35…this is C.Ramchandra’s First film as a Hero. The film ran for just ONE day !), Abdul Kareem Khan (Maut ka Toofan-35 and Voh kaun-35), Master Giyasuddin (Typist girl-35) etc etc.

Dhumman Khan was a renowned name in classical music. Master Vinayak made him Music Director of Fil Chhaya-36. Dhamman khan was impressed with Ratnaprabha and gave her 6 songs out of the total 14 songs of Chhaaya. Even in film Jwaala-38,he gave her 8 songs out of the 10 total songs. In the film Chhaaya he had to make non singers like Leela Chitnis and Indira Wadkar sing songs, so in Jwaala he did not opt for any other singer except Ratnaprabha, who was a trained singer herself.

After two films,Chhaaya and Jwaala,Dhumman Khan returned to his classical music, never ever to come back to films in his life.

The cast of Jwala was Ratnaprabha, Chandramohan, Chandrakant, Bulbule, Ashalata, Vinayak, Rajni etc.

Chandramohan is perhaps not very well known here. He was one of the most Handsome actors Hindi films ever had. He was like Master Nissar. They lived thelife of Kings, but died like beggars !

Chandramohan Watal was born on 24-7-1906, to Kashmiri Bramhin parents, in Narsinghpore in the Central provinces,i.e. today’s M.P. area. By the time he was around 15, his parents had died and he was looked after by his Guardians. When he could no longer tolerate the guardian’s torture, he ran away to Delhi. A friend helped him to get a job as a Cinema manager. After a few sundry jobs, he settled in Mangal Distributors. They sent him to Poona to finalise a deal for “Sairandhri” being produced by Shantaram. Shantaram, impressed with Chandramohan offered him film roles, but he refused. After some time, when Shantaram’s film Amrit manthan was on the floor, Baburao Pendharkar left the company on salary increment issue and Shantaram sent an offer to Chandramohan again. This time he accepted it and did the unforgettable role of Villain Rajguru in Amrit Manthan-34. After doing Amar jyoti and Vahan, Chandramohan had a tiff with Shantaram and he left Prabhat, joining Huns pictures for Jwaala. With Jwaala’s debacle, he came to Bombay and joined Minerva for Pukaar which proved to be a Hit film. Then came Geeta(HIndi/Marathi),Roti and a string of Historical movies.

In all Chandramohan did 32 films. He earned lakhs and spent millions on Races and drinks. He never came drunk on the sets. In his last days, he suffered from hallucinations and saw Durga mata blessing him. He used to say,” Laxmi left me but Durga came to me.”

His role of Shaheed-48, in his last phase was very impressive. His last days were spent in loneliness and poverty. When he died, his consort Sheila had no money, so Cine Artistes association did his last rites.

Film Jwala- 38’s story was-

Angaar (Chandramohan) is the Chief of Army, a loyal and powerful general of the king (Bulbule). he was a doting father, a loving husband and a good friend to Mangala (Ratnaprabha) and Tarang (Chandrakant). Once, when he goes for hunting in the jungle, he meets an evil witch Kuntala (Ashalata) who tells him that the king will die and he will become the King. This sparks an obsession with Angaar and he starts dreaming of becoming the King. Mangala and friend Tarang try to change his mind, but to no avail. His ambition overtakes and he kills the King and declares himself as the King. The people of the kingdom revolt and back the young Prince who should be the King. Angaar becomes cruel and tries to crush the revolt. His wife Mangala and Friend Tarang leave him and join the rightful descendent the Prince in the revolt.

In the end there is a fierce battle between the oppressed and the Oppressors, in which Mangala dies and Angaar becomes fatally wounded.

In that condition also he tries to reach his throne ,but dies just few yards from it.

The Prince in made the King and the people rejoice.

The film was made in Hindi and Marathi and Chandramohan was the Hero in Marathi version also. However he found difficulty in delivering Marathi dialogues. In his subsequent Marathi version of Geeta however Chandramohan was very fluent in Marathi.

Now let us hear the song by Ratnaprabha from film Jwaala-38.

Just for information-
Master Vinayaka was the father of film star Nanda & Jayprakash Karnataki (Husband of Jayshree T.). Vinayaka had given first chance to Lata Mangeshkar in his film ‘Pahli Mangalagaur’.
He was a good comedy actor also & many people were comparing Govinda with him, when Govinda started his career!
