The Voice of Mukesh #39
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

A rare song, and a very infrequent combination indeed. This is a duet sung by Mukesh and Surinder Kaur. Continuing the series of pending Mukesh songs, and now traversing the year 1949, we come across this gem of a song from an obscure film, ‘Daada’. The duo have sung together only in two films, this one and ‘Sunehre Din’, also from the same year. All songs of ‘Sunehre Din’ are already posted here. From ‘Daada’, there are two Mukesh songs pending, and today I bring on one of them.

‘Daada’ is a production from the banner of Omar Khayyaam Films, Bombay, produced by Sheikh Mukhtar and directed by Harish. The ten songs in this film are written by three poets – Majrooh Sultanpuri, Shewan Rizvi and Rafi Ajmeri. This song is from the pen of Shewan Rizvi. The music for this film is by Shaukat Dehalvi. This composer is better known by his pseudonym –Nashaad. It is an interesting observation to see the early career of this artist. He has used the name as Shaukat Ali, Shaukat Hussain, Shaukat Hussain Haideri, Shaukat Dehlavi. Starting his career with film ‘Dildaar’ in 1947, he appears to have used four or five different names, till 1953.

In 1953, an episode occurred that changed his name. Nakhshab Jarchavi, lyricist and film director started work on the film ‘Naghma’. He approached Naushad Sb for taking on the music directorship for the film. The latter refused, and apparently made some comment about the level of production banners he worked with. This upset Nakshab Jarchavi so much that he decided to bring on Shaukat Dehalvi, but changed his name to Nashaad. In a manner of speaking, he was trying to build up a competitor to Naushad Sb. For Shaukat mian, this became a name changing event and for the rest of his career after the film ‘Naghma’, he always used the name ‘Nashaad’.

As we check for the career of Surinder Kaur, it seems that she spent a really short time of her active years, in Bombay. One starts to see her songs in 1948, and come the year 1952, we hear her voice in playback for the last time in the film ‘Aandhiyaan’, and then no more film songs. But as a folk music artist in north India, she was active for more than five decades after this. An aspect of her life that probably needs to be researched some more. Another post, maybe.

Some songs tell about the state of the social system, and reflect the history of the times. The year is 1949, just two years after a very coveted and desired independence was achieved. And we have a song that talks about black market and cheating in commerce, as well as in personal relations. If the lyrics of this song are something to go by, then it is apparent that the above mentioned problems were prevalent even at that time. Quite a commentary it is, on the state of affairs of our society. The social ills, it seems date back to whenever. Has our society always been so? I leave this questions here.

Another interesting thing I may touch upon in passing. Most of us who have grown up in India, and have had some exposure to the legal system will be aware. While some other may wonder, what is this about ‘Four Twenty’ that is gets linked to songs like this one, and there is a film about social and commercial corruption titled ‘Shri 420’ (1955). And just in case you wonder, yes there are more films with similar names. There is a ‘Mr. 420’ from as far back as 1937. Then we have ‘Shrimati 420’ in 1956, and another one titled ‘Ustad 420’ in 1969.

So the story behind the number 420 is as follows. Before the British came to India, the justice system was more to do with natural justice, that was based upon certain texts from our age old scriptures. The kings were the primary dispensers of justice. After the British came and set up an Anglican administration system in our country, they also put together a new justice system for us. There is a lot of debate about the validity of this system, and the primary motivations that Britishers had to set up such a system. I will avoid that controversy here. The point is that as part of this system of justice, the British also wrote and compiled a set of laws that are called the Indian Penal Code. This compilation contains laws that address a wide range of criminal activities, their definitions, and the quantum of punishment applicable for committing such acts. In this compilation, the section that deals with the act of cheating carries the number ‘420’. This number has for long become a commonplace word, and the connection is obvious. In common parlance, an act of cheating and a person doing such an act are referred to by this number. Hence, the terminology.

So aside from that, our purpose is better served to listen to rare and lost number, which claims that everyone in this world is a cheat. Listen and then contemplate. I leave the conclusions to you.

Enjoy.

Sudhir ji,

Thanks for the rare gem.

The words “infrequent combination” reminds me of another combination.
That of Mukesh-Jagit Kaur. I am not aware of any song of this combination.

SingerMukesh website claims an unreleased song from “Hum Sab Ek Hain” ……VO HAI ALLAHH…RAM KAHO YA RAHIM.

I will be highly obliged if you can please throw some light on this even rarer combination of Mukesh-Jagit Kaur.
