An amazing song, a truly amazing song. The arrangement of the music and the play of the singing voices as the song moves from one singer to another to chorus, with multiple combinations. This turned out to be a difficult song to transcribe. 🙂
Mukesh’s journey through 1949 continues. ‘Daada’ is a film from the banner of Omar Khayyaam Films Ltd., and is produced by Sheikh Mukhtar. Harish is the name of the director. Cast of actors includes Sheikh Mukhtar, Shyam, Munawwar Sultana, Begum Para, Mukri, Murad, Ansari, Pratima Devi, Maya Bannerji, Cuckoo, Shamshad Khan, Neela Devi, and Suraiya Sultana etc. The music is created by Shaukat Dehalvi, who later on was better known as Nashaad. The ten songs of this film are written by three poets – Majrooh Sultanpuri, Shewan Rizvi, Rafi Ajmeri, and Hussain Hyderabadi. This song is from the pen of Majrooh Sb. The singing voices are Mukesh and Shamshad Begum.
With this film, it appears that Sheikh Mukhtar initiated his genre of ‘Dada’ and ‘Ustad’ films. This is the second film that he produced under his banner Omar Khayyaam Films Ltd., the first one being ‘Toote Taare’ in 1948. And after this followed the films like ‘Ustad Pedro’ (1951), ‘Dara’ (1953), ‘Mangu’ (1954), etc.
The arrangement and the composition of this song is really interesting. For one, there is this chorus sound of “Ho, Ho” that continues in a low volume, almost through the entire song, in some places even overlapping with the singing by other singers. Second, the verses and the lines on the one hand sound as if incomplete, and on the other the flow so neatly into the next one – a good combination of pace and fun with words. And thirdly, there is a very interesting arrangement and sequencing of the singing voices, that sometimes surprises the listener. The sequencing of the main singing voices and the male and female chorus renderings must have taken a lot of planning and rehearsals. The final result is a remarkable song that seems as if it is on a high speed roll, and is fun to listen. Really a wonder that songs like this have remained anonymous and obscure for decades. Well, the year was 1949, bursting at its seams with melodious hits across the spectrum, and so the lesser films and lesser music directors got very little attention bandwidth in the listener’s memory.
The song tells about the naughty desires that arise in the heart when it is in love. The play on words is beautiful. A verse goes like
taaron ki maujon mein chandaa ki naiyyaa
pyaar ka hai toofan, to pyaara khiwaiyyaa
Simply enchanting. And so, small mercies that the recordings are available. Another rare gem that needs to find its place once again. Listen and enjoy.

Sudhir ji,
Two successive Mukesh numbers with a lead female singer and CHORUS.
The songs are 23 years apart and there is so much contrast in the voice of Mukesh.
I will settle for Mukesh of the 40’s and 50’s any given day.
Atul ji,
The song number is same for both the songs. ie 8904. Kindly correct.
