“Howrah Bridge” (1958) was produced and directed by Shakti Samanta. This movie had Ashok Kumar, Madhubala, K N Singh, Sunder, Om Prakash, Sailen Bose, Krishnakant, Helen, Dhumal, Kammo, Madan Puri, Bhagwan Sinha, Kundan etc in it.
As many as six songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Here is the seventh song from the movie. This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. The song is picturised on Madhubala and Ashok Kumar. Qamar Jalalbadi is the lyricist. Music is composed by O P Nayyar.
The song has O P Nayyar’s characteristic hoof beat genre of music that was used by him for “Tonga/ victoria/ ghoda gaadi” songs. This song does not get picturised on that mode of transportation though. This song is supposed to be picturised on a boat that is moving along river Hoogley and during its journey it passes under the Howrah Bridge as well. This movie was made in 1958 when the famous bridge was only 16 years old (it was built in 1942) and watching it was ( still is) a magnificent sight. The title of this movie must have played an important role in attracting moviegoers to the movie hall.
One may notice that the tune of this movie reminds us of Deewaana huaa baadal saawan ki ghataa chhaayi (Kashmir Ki Kali)(1964) and there too we find “hoof beat” music being employed for a boat song. 🙂
