Suman Kalyanpur (nee Suman Hemmady) remains one of the best-loved voices of Hindi and Marathi songs — almost more than 20 years after she stopped singing full-time.

According to Wikipedia:
” She was born on January 28, 1937 in Bhavanipore* in Calcutta. In 1943, her family moved to Mumbai, where she received her musical training. She is married to Ramanand S. Kalyanpur. (* Confrmed by her autobiography)

Talat Mahmood heard Kalyanpur singing in a musical concert and was highly impressed by her singing. A rank newcomer, her career hit the big league when Talat agreed to sing the duet with her for the film Darwaza (1954), making the film industry sit up and take notice of her.

She sang for many composers after Mohammad Shafi and Naashad gave her initial breaks in playback singing. She sang for the movies, Mangu (1954), Miyan Bibi Razi (1960), Baat Ek Raat Ki (1962), Dil Ek Mandir (1963), Dil Hi To Hai (1963), Shagoon (1964), Jahan Ara (1964), Sanjh Aur Sawera (1964), Noor Jahan (1967), Saathi (1968) and Pakeezah (1971) etc. She has sung over 740 movie and non-movie songs.

She received three times the prestigious “Sur Sringar Samsad” award for the best classical song in a Hindi movie.

Suman’s first song in Marathi was the super-hit ‘Bhaatuklichaa khel maandila’ for Vasant Prabhu, for the film ‘Pasant Aahe Mulgi’. After that she never looked back for over 20 years. Putra Vhawa Aisaa, Ekti, Manini and Annapoorna were but a few of her memorable films. But even outside films, her hits are legion and include over 50 timeless gems of Marathi films, bhavgeet and bhaktigeet. ”

HMV’s MD Murli Manohar composed this bandish for the album ‘Varsha Ritu’ and Suman has sung it beautifully in the thumri style. The traditional composition soothes the nerves of listeners and creates the atmosphere of real rainy season.

barse badarwa matwaare ae

nanhi boondan se birhan ke man
agni lagaavan haare ae
barse badarawa matware ae
barse badarwaa

aur kaali rain

chamke bijuri
aur kaali rain
dar laage sakhi
kahoon kaase bain
bhar aawe nainan kajraare
barse badarwa matwaare
barse badarwaa

ho o oo
ek naveli naar
kiye solah singaar
kare laakh jatan vyaakul man
preetam ki baat nihaare
barse badarwa matwaare,
barse badarwaa
nanhi boondan se birhan ke man
agni lagaavan haare
barse badarwa matware,
barse badarwaa

Silken smooth voice. Some of Suman ji’s Marathi songs and abhangs are beyond compare, such as “Radhika Hari bhajani rangali”, “Chitta shuddha kari shatru mitra hote”, ” Aree saunsar saunsar …”etc

Bharatbhai, many thanks for this beautiful song by Suman-ji. The raga reminds very much of a bhajan sung by Rafi Saab and tuned by Khayyam-ji. Can’t recollect the words now!

Just now I recollected the Rafi bhajan: “Tere Bharose O Nand Lala, Koi Ro Ro Baat Nibhaye”
