Divas of Hindi film music (1) :
————————————
This picnic song from the film ‘ Adaalat ‘ (1958) is a duet of Mohammed Rafi and Asha Bhonsle. This movie has two Rafi-Asha duets, one Lata-Asha duet and Asha-Geeta duet. These songs are already posted in the blog, so are the three famous ghazals by Lata Manageshkar. So this duet picnic songs is the last remaining song from this film.

As now a days, scores of films are being completed right left and center, I thought it prudent that I should make haste and write this post. Actually the intention is to start a new series titled ‘Diva’s of Hindi film music”. Here I am planning to post some songs of female singers. Since I have a few duets of Rafi sahab with various singers, which could not be included in the Rafi series, I am starting with those duets. The first one is with Asha Bhonsle, so Asha is the Diva here.

Music Director is Madan Mohan and lyricist is Rajendra Krishan. The song is picturized as a picnic song on Nargis and Pradip Kumar, who are with a group of friends riding bicycles and enjoying themselves. This film
is mainly famous for these ghazals jaana thha hamse door, Unse ye shikaayat hi ke hum kuchh nahin kahte and Yoon hasraton ke daag. But the fact is that Asha gets all the duets in the movie, including one with Lata. Four duets in one film must be a record for Madan Mohan.

It appears that there are around 800 Rafi-Asha duets(including with chorus). We are yet to reach the 350 mark in the blog for these duets, which is less than 50%. In this at least, Asha Bhonsle has left Lata Mangeshkar far behind.

So who is more versatile. The question doesn’t merit an answer. Does it?

The question does merit an answer. There is no question on the versatility of all three of them. If duets are the yardstick, than Rafi sahab is most versatile. 🙂

Nahm ji, Atul ji,

I checked with the more complete audio recording in my collection. The missing lines in the first antaraa are as follows:

ho o o o
cycle sawaar baandhe qataar
lo ham chale
lo ham chale

hey ae ae
jungle ke paar
hirnon ki daar
jaise chale
lo ham chale

Wow what a peppy number! Loved it! In loop now :). Thank you nahm ji, seeing this series of yours for the first time. I just love all your series. Taking a cue from Nitin Ji’s comment above.. the next series that you could work on could be “Versatility of Rafi Sahab” :).

One other reason I really like this post was because just yesterday, and many times before I always felt that almost all the duets sung by Rafi & Asha are splendid and have a magic to them. She is a Diva indeed. Thank you nahm ji :).

Main to YIPPEEEE!! karna bhool hee gaya :). YIPPEEEE!! Adalat (1958) joins the ranks of movies that have all its songs discussed on the blog. Thank you and Congratulations Atul Ji!. I was confused with Ja Ja Re Ja Saajna song, which was mentioned as a Multiple Version Song. Then realised that the same song has both the Happy & Sad version in one song :).
