Today is the 86th birth anniversary of Dwijen Mukhopadhyay, the doyen of the Bangla folk music and also considered to be the greatest living exponent of Rabindra Sangeet. We wish you all happiness, peace and good health.
Born this day in 1927, Dwijen Babu received his training in music from singers and musicians of such eminence as Sushanto Lahiri, Pankaj Mullick, Anaadi Ghosh Dastidar and Niharbindu Sen. He made his debut as a professional singer in 1944. He worked as a singer and musician at the All India Radio. His devotion to Rabindra Sangeet has been exceptional and he has worked with music directors of the ilk of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and Pt Ravi Shankar, in creating many stage performances from the literature of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore.
When IPTA (Indian People’s Theatre Association) was formed in the early 1940s, Dwijen Babu became associated with it. While at IPTA, he came in contact with Salil Chaudhry, who introduced him to Bangla folk music and also, brought him to Hindi film industry. Although he had rendered only a handful of songs in Hindi films, but each of them is a wonderful gem that became popular and are still remembered.
Here is a song from an obscure film titled ‘Jawahar’, from 1960. No information is available about this film, except the information about its songs. The lyrics for the 5 songs in this film come from the pen of Prem Dhawan and the music is composed by Salil Da. The song is a duet sung by Dwijen Babu and Lata Mangeshkar.
The melody is vintage Salil Chaudhry creation. The flow and the lilt is simply enchanting. The surprise, as always, is that such beautiful gems of such wonderful musical and rendering quality have remained hidden for so long. Listen to this oh so pleasing melody, and wonder.

Hats off Sudhirji for unearthing this rare gem. Kindly post Bachche kyun royen, bachchon ko hansne do by Manna De from this movie if possible.

He (not to confuse with Subir Sen, who had similar voice; for that matter most of the Bangla singers have similar voice)also sang the famous

if another male singer was given this song ,it would have produced better results.
