Divas of Hindi film music (10)
———————————-
After posting 6 duets in a row, I am in the middle of posting solos of these Divas of Hindi film music. Asha, Geeta, Lata, Shamshad, Suman and Suraiyya are the Divas at present, in alphabetical order.

What is it with me and the alphabetical order ? In case people start to wonder, I did not start and continuing this series in any particular order. Not the way I personally rate these singers, nor the way they are generally perceived in terms of versatility or popularity etc.

It is obvious that I rate Lata to be the best female playback singer of all times. For sheer class and perfection. Asha and Suraiyya would be on the second rung closely followed by Geeta, Suman and Shamshad. If one is to include Noorjahaan also in this, I would not know where to fit her in this pyramid. She has very few songs in hindi films, as far as I can see.

There is a very good reason for considering Suraiyya so highly. That is because she was never really in competition with the other playback singers, she was in a class of her own. She only sang for herself (with a few exceptions) and did well within her limitations. Also she was not required to modulate her voice and style as per the actor lip synching the song, which in turn limited her repertoire and also freed her to always sing as per her heart’s content, as people do with non-film songs. Whatever lack she may have had in terms of versatility she made up with her ingenuity and certain intrinsic perkiness. There were other singing stars when she made name and fame for herself in the industry. Here she was outstanding, a perfect star. In 40s if there was any other singing stars, who could match her, apart from Noorjahan, I dont know them.

So presenting a happy sounding song by Suraiyya with chorus from the film Duniya (1949). The music Director is C. Ramchandra. There is some confusion regarding who is the lyricist of this song as well as other songs of this movie. All songs barring one are credited to Aarzoo Lucknowi, S. H. Bihari, Asad Bhopali, Saraswati Kumar Deepak(all together). The two songs posted in the blog are credited to Aarzoo lucknowi, which is the first name in the list. I think it is safe to go with Aarzoo Lucknowi as the lyrcist fo this song too.

The movie seems to be lost as no videos are available on youtube. So we have to do with only the audio of the song. With 185 songs posted in the blog, this artist has quite a few songs still to be covered in the blog. The Wikipedia page on her , has a lot of information on her. As per Wikipedia, she is the original Mallika-e-Tarrannum of the sub-continent, even before Noor Jahan. I was trying to find total number of songs sung by Suraiya, but was unable to find it online.
