Kaif Irfani had an active filmy career from 1949 to 1965 during which he had written 111 songs in 49 Hindi films. We have covered 38 of his songs so far in the blog. Some of his remaining songs are not available on internet as of now.

I am presenting the last song from my list of rare gems penned by Kaif Irfani. The song is ‘sitaaron se poochho nazaaron se poochho’ from the film DHUN (1953). The film was produced under the banner of Silver Productions and directed by M Kumar who was an actor in 30s and 40s and continued to act in the films until 60s. The film had Raj Kapoor and Nargis in lead roles with Motilal, Pramila, Kamal Mehra, M Kumar, Cuckoo etc in the supporting roles. The songs of the film were set to music by Madan Mohan. In my younger days, I became aware of this film because of the song “badi barbaadiyaan lekar meri duniyaa mein pyaar aaya”, the only song from the film I had heard those days.

Raj Kapoor and Nargis worked together in 16 films. Most of their films were ranked in the categories of hit, super hit and blockbuster. However, this hit pair had two or three flop films and I guess that the performance of ’Dhun’(1953) at the box office may have been the worst among them. What would have gone wrong with the film despite having a hit pair, a natural actor like Motilal and the superb songs? The video of the film is not available and I have no idea about the story of the film. So it is difficult to analyse the film’s box office failure. But the net effect of this film was that Madan Mohan added one more film to his list of flop films with outstanding songs.

This song under discussion is one more example of how the mood of the lyrics gets beautifully translated by an excellent rendition and the selection of an appropriate tune and the orchestration. I liked the violin played with dholak rhythm in the background during the interlude before the last stanza in keeping with the mood of the song.

Only the audio clip of the song is available. But it is apparent that the song was picturised on Nargis.

song-Sitaaron se poochho nazaaron se poochho (Dhun)(1953) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Kaif Irfani, MD-Madan Mohan

Lyrics

sitaaron se poochho
nazaaron se poochho
ke ham teri yaad mein sataayen huye hain
ke ham teri yaad mein sataayen huye hain

ye palkon pe meri bojhal fasaane aen
ye palkon pe meri bojhal fasaane
mujhe kar de waapis wo guzre zamaane aen
guzre zamaane
wafaa ke kadam dagmagaaye huye hain en
ke ham teri yaad mein sataayen huye hain

tarasti hain tere hi aane ko raahen
tarasti hain tere hi aane ko raahen
uthhi jaa rahi hain tadapkar nighaaen
uthhi jaa rahi hain tadapkar nighaayen en
taras ham pe aansoo bhi khhaayen huye hain
ke ham teri yaad mein sataayen huye hain
sitaaron se poochho
nazaaron se poochho
ke ham teri yaad mein sataayen huye hain aen
ke ham teri yaad mein sataayen huye hain

This rendition reminds of the Asha version here, especially in the second and third sha’ir, tune is same.
