Shahanshah (1953) was produced under the banner of G P Sippy Productions and directed by Amiya Chakraborty. The star cast included Ranjan, Shakila, Kamini Kaushal, K N Singh, Agha, Mukri, Achala Sachdev, Cuckoo, Neeru, Ramesh Sippy etc. With Ranjan as the hero, it is apparent that the film belonged to the genre of action/costume drama.
The song which I am presenting is the one I had heard during my younger days without knowing that the song was from the film SHAHANSHAH (1953). I heard this song after a gap of more than 5 decades only sometime last week. The intoxicating song is ‘jaam thaam le sochte hi sochte na bitey saari raat’ sung by Shamshad Begum. The film had 9 songs, all written by Sahir Ludhianvi and set to music by S D Burman.
I would have very much liked to watch the video clip of this song but only the audio clip is available. With Shamshad Begum singing, I guess that the song was picturised on Cuckoo.
The song has two versions, both sung by Shamshad Begum. The first version seems to me to be the one originally planned. In the second version, the line ‘duniyaa ke har dukh ka daaru ek sunahri jaam’ is omitted in the second stanza and the third stanza has different lyrics. I note from one of the comments on YT that Censor Board had problem with the word ‘daaru’. Probably the Censure Board may have felt that there is a glorification of ‘daaru’ as a panacea for grief. So in the revised version, this line has been omitted. I guess that records were already released in the original version before the Censor Board’s objection. Thereafter new records were released omitting the objectionable line. But some people may have already bought the records of the original version which must have now become a collector’s item.
Incidentally Sahir Ludhinavi had conveyed more or less the same thought by writing ‘main fiqr ko dhuen mein udaataa chalaa gaya’ (glorification of cigarettes as a panacea for worry). But at that time, Censor Board did not object to the line. It appears that in the Censor Board’s view ‘daaru’ is more injurious to health than cigarette :).
In this film, S D Burman had songs sung by female playback singers like Lata Mangeshkar (3), Asha Bhonsle (2) and Geeta Dutt (1). By selecting Shamshad Begum for this song, S D Burman has one again proved that his selection of playback singers are perfect.

duniyaa ke har dukh ka daaroo ek sunehri jaam

… continuing after the interval 🙂
@ Atul ji – many thanks for the post and for both the versions of this song. Regarding ‘injurious to health …. I think both are injurious to health (if overdosed… ) 🙂

In the credits below the YT clip the lyricist name needs to be corrected as Lyrics – Sahir Ludhianvi, instead S.D.Burman.
