Today (6 december 2013) is the death anniversary of singer-music director Arun Kumar Mukherji. I came to know of this fact from the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation’s “Puraani Filmom ke Geet” programme of today. In this programme, they sought to play only songs of Arun Kumar Mukherji except the last song, which is always a K L Saigal song.

In the programme, Arun Kumar Mukherji was called just Arun Kumar, which is not a wise thing seeing that there was another person of the same name at that time. I found that one of the songs played in the programme was erroneously described as a song by Arun Kumar (Mukherji), whereas it was actually sung by the other Arun Kumar of those days, namely by Arun Kumar Ahuja (Govinda’s father). This song was “hansne ki tamanna barbaad hai dil ki” from “Sehra” (1947), a composition by S Mohinder. So it would seem that even SLBC announcer, despite her utmost care suffered from the “Same Name confusion”, a term coined by yet another Arun Kumar, namely our beloved inhouse encyclopaedia Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh. 🙂

Now that I have came to know that today is Arun Kumar Mukherji’s death anniversary, I thought of discussing one of his songs. But I did not want to make the mistake of discussing a song sung by the other Arun Kumar. So I hit upon the safe option of discussing a song composed by Arun Kumar Mukherji. As it is, Arun KUmar Mukherji was a singer-music composer, whereaas Arun Kumar Ahuja was a singer- actor, so one would be certain that a song composed by Arun Kumar could only be a composition of Arun Kumar Mukherji.

As it is, the most well known Hindi movie of Arun Kumar Mukherji as a music director is “Parineeta” (1953), but all songs of this movie have already been discussed. When I looked for some another Hindi movie where he had composed music, I realised that “Samaaj” (1954) was one such movie. This movie was produced by Ashok Kumar and directed by Vasant Joglekar. The movie had Ashok Kumar, Usha Kiran, Sumati Gupte, Shashikala, Anoop Kumar, Agha, Leela Misra, Samson, N. Hussain etc in it. Two songs from this movie have been discussed in the past.

This third song from “Samaaj” (1954) is sung by Lata. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. The music, as mentioned above, is composed by Arun Kumar Mukherji.

Only the audio of this song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

Song-Rukhsat e duniya teri mehfil(Samaaj)(1954) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Arun Kumar Mukherji

Lyrics(Provided by Nitin Shah)

rukhsat e duniya aa
rukhsat e duniya
teri mehfil
meri mehfil nahin
ismein teri kya khata aa
ismein teri kya khata
main hi tere qaabil nahi
rukhsat e duniya
rukhsat e duniya
teri mehfil
meri mehfil nahin

aaye jab duniya mein ham to
hans ke qismat ne kaha
teri manzil aur hai
duniya teri manzil nahin
teri manzil aur hai
duniya teri manzil nahin
rukhsat e duniya aa
rukhsat e duniya
teri mehfil
meri mehfil nahin

ho chuka jab khoon hi dil ka
to phir kya faayyda
ho chuka jab khoon hi dil ka
to phir kya faaiyda
kyun kisi ka naam loon
kyu kisi ka naam loon
koi mera qaatil nahin
mat mujhe aawaaz do o
mat mujhe aawaaz do
ab doob jaane do mujhe ae
mat mujhe aawaaz do
ab doob jaane do mujhe
main hoon toofaan ke liye
main hoon toofaan ke liye
mere liye saahil nahin
rukhsat e duniya
teri mehfil
meri mehfil nahin
rukhsat e duniyaaaa

Atulji,
He also gave music to some of the songs in Shamsheer-1953. So he could be termed as 3-movie-wonder

Most of us, perhaps, are not familiar with music director Arun Kumar Mukherji. Learnt only through your blog that he had composed music for film Parineeta (1953) and from the comment thereon that ” he could be termed as 3 movie wonder”. Parineeta was a classic film in which Meena Kumari had given outstanding performance. The film had some beautiful songs too viz Gore gore haathon me and Chali Radhe rani etc.
