Divas of hindi film music (17)
————————————–

Resuming the series, after a short break. I had intended to take a brief break of a few days only. But one thing led to another and I was unable to come back to this series soon enough as I had originally intended to.

Now the remaining four songs of the series are ready and the posts should hopefully flow smoothly from one to the next and so on.

This song I have chosen for this post is from the film “Inaam”(1955). It is a Ghazal by Suraiyya. The lyricist is Raja Mehdi Ali Khan and composer is S N Tripathi. One song from this film has been posted in the blog in the past.

Not much information is available about “Inaam” except for information about the cast at the imdb website. As is the case with many such songs from obscure films, only the audio is available. I had the lyrics noted down at the start of this series. A very nice melancholy ghazal, if something sad can be called nice. 🙂

One can gauge the background of the lyricist sometimes from certain words they use. For example, take a look at the word ‘pinhaa’ in this line :

main tum ko haar ashkon ke
pinhaa loon phir chale jaana

As opposed to the classic ‘pehnaa’ of Northern Urdu, the word ‘pinhaa’ belongs to the Dakkhani Urdu. Apart from Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, I think Rajendra Krishan also was fond of using such Dakkhani words is his songs.

This song from Inaam (1955) is only the third Suraiyya song in the series and the last by her, after these two songs, viz. this song and this song.

So here is Suraiyya crooning the ‘aakhri naghma’ in her unique style which is now antiquated, almost.

tere jaate hi saaz-e-zindagaani toot jaayegaa
main apnaa aakhri naghmaa sunaa loon phir chale jaana
zara thehro

Song-Zara thehro main haal e dil suna loon (Inaam)(1955) Singer-Suraiyya, Lyrics-Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, MD-S N Tripathi

Lyrics

Zara thehro
zara thehro
main haal-e-dil sunaa loon
phir chale jaana
tamannaaon ko ashkon mein bahaa loon
phir chale jaana
zara thehro

arrey o jaanewaale
ek hi pal ke liye ruk jaa
arey o jaanewaale
ek hi pal ke liye ruk jaa
main shama-e-zindagi apni bujhaa loon
phir chale jaana
zara thehro
main haal-e-dil sunaa loon
phir chale jaana
zara thehro

qayaamat ki ghadi hai
aaj to jee bhar ke rone do
qayaamat ki ghadi hai
aaj to jee bhar ke rone do
main tum ko haar ashkon ke
pinhaa loon phir chale jaana
zara thehro
main haal-e-dil sunaa loon
phir chale jaana
zara thehro

tere jaate hi saaz-e-zindagaani
toot jaayegaa
tere jaate hi saaz-e-zindagaani
toot jaayegaa
main apnaa aakhri naghmaa sunaa loon
phir chale jaana
zara thehro
main haal-e-dil sunaa loon
phir chale jaana
tamannaaon ko ashkon mein bahaa loon
phir chale jaana
zara thehro
