This year (2014) the Mahashivratri day falls on the 27th February and it will be celebrated with lots of religious fervour throughout India.
According to Vedas and Purana’s, there were 33 Crore Gods. Considering that the entire population of the whole world was not even that much, each person those days could easily have 4-5 Gods to himself. This funny thought aside, it is to be taken only symbolically that there is God in every person.
Indian Mythology talks of three Loks, i.e. Swarg, Prithvi and Paatal, allotted each to Gods, Humans and Demons respectively. The entire Universe is controlled by the Celestial Trinity of BRAMHA-the creator, VISHNU-the sustainer and MAHESH-the destroyer. This again may be symbolic as every being has 3 stages of Birth, Life and Death.
In India there is no dearth of Gods.Different forms of God are worshipped in every state and every community in India. In olden times there were two sects of population-Vaishnavas-those who worshipped Vishnu or his Avatars and Shaivas-those who worshipped Lord Shiva.
Out of all these Gods, my favourite is Lord Shiva. This is also because my father was a great Shiv Bhakta. he had constructed a Shiva Temple in the compound of our Bungalow in Hyderabad and every year the Mahashivratri festival used to be celebrated on grand scale at this place. On every Monday, in the month of Shrawan and on the day of Mahashivratri, there used to be great rush of devotees. On Mahashivratri, the whole night used to be full of Bhajans and Keertans. Shiv Bhajan records would begin to be played on Loudspeakers from the previous day onwards .I remember all this even today.
Besides being the God of destruction, Shiva is also the God of Yoga and Arts like dancing. That is why in every Indian style dancing school, you will find the Natraj idol displayed prominently. Lord Shiva had two distinctly opposite images. One as the God living in Shamshaan (cremation ground), having a battalion of Shiv-Gans, and having a fearful appearance as the God of Destruction. The other appearance of Lord Shiva is like a proper married householder, with wife Parvati and two sons-Kartikeya and Ganesh. They also had a daughter-Ashokn Sundari or Mansa Devi. This is mentioned in some Puranas. In one of our next episodes, we shall learn more about this Shiv kanya, prior to Mahashivratri.
Starting from Today, for the next 5 days,we will enjoy One Shiv bhajan every day till the 27th. Today, the first Bhajan is from the film ” Jai Mahadev”-1955.
Most Hindi mythological movies were produced during the decade of the 50s. These movies covered a multitude of Gods, but most of these movies were on Mahadev. Being my favourite God, I used to see all these films and enjoy them.
Jai Mahadev-55 was a film produced by Ratilal Vora and directed by Ramchandra Thakur. Thakur was born in Ahmedgarh, Gujarat,on 17-12-1908. He started his career with the film Gramophone Singer-1938, by writing its story and directing the film along with B.C.Desai. He directed 15 films in all, like Kasauti, Apna paraya, Aarti, Garibi, Makkhichoos, Nawab Sirajuddaula etc. He had also written the story of the Golden jubilee film Baiju Bawra-52. Ramchandra Thakur died on 31-12-1992 at Bombay.
The film had music by Manna Dey, who gave music to 16 films (shared the credit with other music directors in 12 films). This was one of the 4 films to which he had given music independently. There were 9 songs in the film and 5 singers were used. The cast of the film was Nalini Jaywant, Trilok Kapoor, Mahipal, S.N.Tripathi, Jeewan etc.
The story of the film was that the Rakshas Tarkasur was creating havoc in the world of mortals by torturing them. he was invincible, and could only be killed by Lord Shiva’s son. The problem was Shiva was a bachelor and always busy in sadhana on Kailas parwat. Unless he got married and has a child this was not possible. Gods decided to send the God of Love-Kamdev to entice Shiva and make him marry Parvati, who was eager to get married to Shiva. Kamdev cast his spell on Shiva and broke his sadhana. Shiva was so angry that he opened his third eye and burnt Kamdev into ashes. This was terrible. The whole universe was now without love. Kamdev’s wife Rati and other Gods were much grieved and started pleasing Shiva. Finally Shiva opened his eyes and blessed Rati that her husband will forever be within every living soul, but she wanted Kamdev alive for her. So Shiva gave a boon that in Dwapar yug, they will unite physically. Shiva also married Parvati and they had a son Kartikeya who killed Tarkasur and thus saved the world from his terror.
Now let us hear this Bhajan by Manna Dey, from the film Jai Mahadev-1955. Bharat Vyas is the lyricist of this bhajan.
Song-Om Jai Jai Mahadev (Jai Mahadev)(1955) Singer-Manna Dey, Lyrics-Bharat Vyas, MD-Manna Dey

At the outset I would like to congratulate you for starting ‘bhajnotsav’ for the next five days. In golden era of the Hindi film industry lots of mythological films used to be made and we had seen actors like Prem Adib, Manhar Desai, Sahu Modak, Mahipal, Trilok Kapoor etc portraying ‘gods’ on silver screen. But those were different times and different people. In present times the very thought of watching a mythological film may scare most of the play, especially the younger generation. Despite all this, filmi bhajans and songs of this genre have created their own space and provide solace and balm to the listeners since ages. You have yourself described the use of loudspeaker in your home temple for playing bhajans. Our homes, mandirs, pandals etc are no exceptions on the festive occasion. So the next coming days are bound to be celebration days for most of us.
