Badalte Huye Saathi- Episode: 5 ( Geeta Roy sings with Hamida Bano)
———————————————————————-
In the last episode we have heard Geeta Roy singing with a fading, downhill singer Surendra. Today it is the turn of yet another fading singer Hamida Bano to sing with Geeta Roy.
Geeta Roy Dutt sang about 1200 songs in Hindi films. Out of this around 340 were from the period of 1946 to 1949, which, for a newcomer, was highly commendable. It looks like she was a much in demand singer in these 4 years. It was of course before the Hurricane called Lata hit the Film industry by the end of the decade. Though Geeta sang about 755 songs in the next 10 years (1950 to 1959), it was nowhere near the outputs of Lata or Asha. Geeta sang only 85 songs in the 60s and a meagre 20 odd songs in the 2 years’ period of 70-72.
Being a prolific singer in the second half of the 5th decade- i.e. from 1946 to 1949, it was quite natural that she sang with almost all the existing singers during this period. Surprisingly, most of her co-singers in this period were old generation singers, who disappeared from the scene in the next few years. These singers were- Munawwar Sultana, Naseem Akhtar, Binapani Mukherjee, Parul Ghosh, Hamida Banu, Narayan Sharma, Rajkumari, G M Durrani, S K Ragi, Rekharani, Radha Govind, A R Oza, Lalita Deulkar, Shankar Dasgupta, Sulochana Kadam, Zohrabai, Shyam Kumar, Meena Kapoor, Purushottam, Sheela Sharar, Surendra, Ashok Kumar, S D Batish, Premlata and Vinod.
One advantage that Geeta got wasthat she learnt something or the other from every singer. This enriched and fine tuned her singing style and she became a tough competitor for singers like Lata, Asha and others. In this period, she did sing few songs with Lata, Asha, Mukesh, Manna Dey and Rafi, but they did not add up to a total of even 10 songsin all.
In today’s song Geeta sings with Hamida Bano.
Singer Hamida Bano was born on 19-10-1928 in Lahore. Her family shifted to Bombay in 1942, the same year as that of Geeta Roy’s family did. Hamida’s elder brother Akbar worked with a Drama company. He gave her the initial training in singing. This kindled a desire in her mind to sing in Hindi Films. Those days, the well known Actor/Director Master Bhagwan lived nearby. He once recommended her name to his best friend-C.Ramchandra. He was the Music Director for Bhagwan’s film ” Naghma-e-Sahara “-1943. He gave her a break with 3 songs in this film. unfortunately, this film got delayed and was released only in 1945. Meanwhile, Naushad had found her and he gave her a song in film ” Sanjog”-43 and she sang her first released song with Shyam kumar in this movie.
C.Ramchandra continued using her in films like Bahadur, Lalkar, Manorama, Raunaq, Sawan etc. In those years C. Ramchandra himself was not very famous- till his HIT films like Safar-46 and Shehnai-47 etc came about. So Hamida did not benefit much from these songs. from 1945, it was composer Bulo C Rani who used Hamida Bano for some really memorable songs in film ” Moorti”-45 viz. badariya baras gayi uss paar. Then came Rajputani, Chheen le Azadi, Phulwari, Badi baat, Shahenshah Babar, Naseeb, Parayi aag, Preet, Devar, Dharti,Nek Parveen, Neelkamal, Tohfa and Rimjhim. After 1950 her songs became less and she sang in Bikhre Moti, Rajput, Anjaam, and Majboori-54-her last film in India. She sang about 150 odd songs in about 60 films.
In 1956, she migrated to Pakistan. In Karachi, she recorded some songs. Then she settled in Lahore and became active in social work. Occasionally, she was seen in functions like ” Nigar Awards Function ” etc. She continued singing on Lahore Radio. Hamida Bano died on 20-11-2006 at the age of 78 yrs. Her last song in India was with Asha in Majboori-1954-“Tere poojan ko Bhagwan bana Manmandir aalishan”.
Today’s song is from the film Rajput-1951. This was a Jubilee Pictures’ film, produced and directed by Lakhraj Bhakhri-brother of Mulkraj Bhakhri. This was the Debut film for Lekhraj as a Direction. His film career was of a short duration, from 1951-1962, a period of just 11 years during which he directed 17 films. He then diversified into Story, Dialogue and Screenplay writing for films like, Sahara, Panchayat, Shama and Maa Beta. He died on 3-3-1976 after a prolonged illness. He left behind his wife Ved kumari and 5 children. He was actor Manoj kumar’s cousin too.
Film Rajput-51 had 2 Music Directors, 8 Lyricists and 9 singers for a total of 12 songs. Hansraj Hahl and Husnalal Bhagatram gave music. There is a 3-part song in the film. The first and third part were composed by Hansraj Behl. Only the 2nd part of the song-which was the Debut song for Madhubala Jhaveri- and one more song was composed by Husnalal Bhagatram. the 8 Lyricists were, Moti,B.A., Asad Bhopali, Kaif Irfani, Verma Malik, Indivar, Anjum Jaipuri, Rajendra Krishna and Bharat Vyas. The group of 9 singers comprised of Hamida Bano, Geeta, Suraiya, Shamashad Begum, Madhubala Jhaveri, Rafi, Talat, S.Balbir and Manna Dey.
In our next episode Hamida Bano sings with….
Till then, let us enjoy this duet of Geeta Roy and Hamida Bano from the film Rajput. Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Hansraj Bahl.
Song-Do roz ka jalwa hai dikhaane ke liye hai(Rajput)(1951) Singers-Hamida Bano, Geeta Roy, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-Hansraj Bahl
Chorus
Lyrics
aa aa aa
chhupne ke liye hai
na chhipaane ke liye hai
do roz ka
do roz ka jalwa hai
dikhaane ke liye hai
do roz ka jalwa hai
dikhaane ke liye hai
do roz ka jalwa hai
dikhaane ke liye hai
uthhta hua toofaan dabaana nahin achchaa
jaage huye armaan sulaana nahin achcha
ye kisne kaha
dil ka lagaana nahin achcha aa
ye kisne kaha
dil ka lagaana nahin achcha
aa
aa aa aa
aa aa aa
aa aa aa
ye kisne kaha
dil ka lagaana nahin achcha
kehte hain
kehte hain jise dil
wo lagaane ke liye hai
kehte hain jise dil
wo lagaane ke liye hai
do roz ka jalwa hai
dikhaane ke liye hai
do din ka ye mela hai
bahaaron ka mazaa loot
do din ka ye mela hai
bahaaron ka mazaa loot
phoolon ka maza loot
sitaaron ka mazaa loot
mehfil mein haseenon ke ishaaron ka mazaa loot
mehfil mein haseenon ke ishaaron ka mazaa loot
aa
aa aa aa
aa aa aa
aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa
mehfil mein haseenon ke ishaaron ka mazaa loot
har naaz
har naaz haseenon ka
uthhaane ke liye hai
har naaz haseenon ka
uthhaane ke liye hai
do roz ka jalwa hai
dikhaane ke liye hai
haan chhed zara
jhoom ke
ulfat ka taraana
kehta jaa zamaane se
mohabbat ka fasaana
hai ishq ki thhokar mein
zamaane ka zamaana
kehte hain
kehte hain jise aankh ladaane ke liye hai
kehte hain jise aankh ladaane ke liye hai
do roz ka jalwa hai
dikhaane ke liye hai

Your story fascinates not because you write so nicely but because of your dedication to collect all the relevant material from various sources and put them together in such a way which keeps the reader spellbound.
Name of various singers, films, MDs and lyricists mentioned with other details simply shows your painstaking effort of presentation.
They very rightly call you ” in-house encyclopaedia”.
Thanks a lot for this nice series and such a fine presentation.
