Raag Maalikaa in Hindi Films – 13
======================
In the year 1959 Vijay Bhatt produced, under the banner of ‘Prakash Pictures’, a memorable movie ‘Goonj Uthi Shehnai’, which had music as its main theme. This is the only film in which Shehnai Maestro Ustad Bismillah Khan played his Shehnai. The star cast consisted of Rajendra Kumar, Ameeta, Ullhas, Manmohan Krishna, I S Johar, Anita Guha, Leela Misra, Master Lalit Kumar, Baby Shobha, etc.
The hero of the film Rajendra Kumar was a shehnai player, later who becomes a renowned radio artist. He, during his early childhood, played by Master Lalit Kumar, used to copy the classical singing of a music guru (Ullhas) on his shehnai. The genius of music director Vasant Desai found a situation for presenting a Raaga Maalika in the film.
It was a unique experiment of presenting a ‘Jugalbandi’ in the singing and playing of two great stalwarts of Hindustani Classical Music, Ustad Ameer Khan of ‘Indore Gharana’ and shehnai Ustad Bismillah Khan of ‘Banaras Gharana’.
First, in the early dawn period, Guru ji (played by Ullhas), is shown reciting in the temple before his diety ‘Radha-Krishna’ ‘Neeshadina Bisarata’ in Raga ‘Bhatiyar’. In the same temple premises, the child hero (played by Master Lalit Kumar) is sitting behind a pillar copying truly the vocal singing of Guru ji on his Shehnai. His Shehnai playing draws the attention of music Guru ji, who comes to the boy and praises him for his efforts and brings that orphan boy to his home, for giving him music lessons. Music director of the film Vasant Desai selected these Ragas Bhatiyar, Ramkali, Desi, Shuddha Sarang, Multani, Bageshri, and Tarana in Chandrakauns, as most appropriate for this ‘Raaga Maala’ sequence in the film and left everything on to these two Ustads.
The Tarana singng was speciality of Ustad Ameer Khan, who used to say that the ‘bols’ of Tarana are not meaningless words. He also uses ‘Persian Verses’, in his Taranas.
I have tried to decipher lyrics of the fast and intricate ‘taans’ and ‘bols’ of Ustad Ameer Khan, with may be few mistakes. I also request some ‘Atulite’ to correct the words of ‘Persian Verse’.
PS-This movie had nine songs in it and they have already been covered in the blog. This raagmaala is mentioned in the appendix of HFGK and it is additional to the nine songs of the movie.

Just brilliant!!!
I remember seeing this film a long time ago, only for the songs. The film itself was quite OK, but the songs are just wonderful.
I checked the lyrics here to the best of my (limited) ability, and they look ok to me. 🙂
Thank you for this wonderful post, Bharatji.

Bharat ji, thanks for the beautiful post and the ragamaalika. You seem to specialize in writing about such compositions.
Ustad Bismillah Khan played shehnai in a Kannada movie, “Sanaadi Appanna”. Sanaadi here means shehnai and Appanna is the name of the hero’s character who plays shehnai. Even though he was reluctant when first approached, he agreed to played after listening to the music pieces composed by GK Venkatesh. All songs of the movie were chartbusters and the playing by Ustad ji, goes without saying, is excellent.
You can listen to one of them at:

Others songs are also available on youtube, you search by the movie name.

Bharat ji,
A beautiful Raagmaala , starting from the twilight of the day with Bhatiyaar , covering the 1st and 2nd prahar (Ramkali, Desi, Suddh Sarang), and moving on to the 3rd prahar (Multani) before concluding with late evening/night Raagas (Baghesree and Chandrakauns). It also covers 6 Thats Bhairav, Marwa, Asavari, Kafi, Kalyan and Thodi. Listening to Ustad Amir Khan and especially Ustad Bismillah Khan’s Shehnaai was mesmerising. Thanks Bharat ji for post and the wonderful Raagmaala.
