“My Sister”(1944) was directed by Hem Chandra for New Theatres, Calcutta. This movie had K L Saigal, Sumitra Devi, Nawab, Akhtar Jahaan, Chandrawati, Hiralal, Tulsi Chakravorti, Tandon, Shor, Rajlaxmi etc in it.

This movie is well known for its songs sung by K L Saigal. But the other songs of the movie are rather less known. This movie had seven songs in it. Five of them, including all the four K L Saigal songs are covered in the blog. This leaves two songs. Both these songs are sung by female playback singers.

Here is the sixth song from “My Sister” (1944). Pt Bhushan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Pankaj Mullick.

HFGK mentions this song as sung by Utpala Sen. But several comments in YT mentions that this song is sung by Suprobha Sarkar and one comment even mentions the detail of the record viz. Record number H 1140. Record published in April, 1945. I think that the YT comments are correct. The voice of Utpala Sen is different as can be noticed by listening to her Bangla song “Ek haathe mor pujaar thhaala aare ek haathe maala” under the music direction of Sudhirlal Chakraborty that had shot her to fame in Bangla music.

I notice that this song seems to have two different versions (one available earlier in YT and another that I uploaded recently) and they have slight difference in lyrics. For instance, the first version has the sentence “sab ek hawas ke bande hain” while the second version has “sab ek haram ke nange hain” for the same line.

This song from “My Sister” (1944), though overshadowed by K L Saigal songs of the movie, is a superb song in its own right and desrves to be better known.

Song-Jal jaane do (My Sister)(1944) Singer-Suprobha Sarkar, Lyrics-Pt Bhushan, MD-Pankaj Mullick

Lyrics

jal jaane do is duniya ko
duniya ko
jab ismein sachcha pyaar nahin
yahaan dil thhukraaye jaate hain
aur koi
aur koi
aur koi kisi ka yaar nahin
jal jaane do
jal jaane do

ye garaz nahin
ye garaz nahin
koi ??
khudgarzon ki basti hai
inhen lene ko
inhen lene ko
taiyyaar hain sab
dene ko koi taiyyaar nahin
jal jaane do
jal jaane do

aankhon mein kisi ki sharam nahin
sab ek haram ke nange hain
aankhon mein kisi ki sharam nahin
sab ek haram ke nange hain
matlab ke
matlab ke hain laakhon dost magar
?? gham khwaar nahin
?? gham khwaar nahin
jal jaane do
jal jaane do
jal jaane do
is duniya ko
is duniya ko
jab ismein sachcha pyaar nahin
yahaan dil thukraaye jaate hain
aur koi
aur koi
aur koi kisi ka yaar nahin
