As I am checking the list of songs from 1976, I find this gem of a ‘naat’ (Islamic religious song) rendered by Rafi Sb. The film is ‘Sangraam’, directed by Harmesh Malhotra. The words are written by Gauhar Kanpuri and the music is by Bhappi Lahiri. ‘Sangraam’ is a film that is not in memory otherwise. The films that I remember from that year are ‘Chitchor’, ‘Hera Pheri’ and ‘Chalte Chalte’. And yes, ‘Fakiraa’ and ‘Dus Numbri’. I remember I had seen ‘Chitchor’ and ‘Hera Pheri’ on the big screen.
As I viewed the video clip, I see Danny. And I am thinking – ‘wow, that far back’. Other notables in the list of actors are Shatrughan Sinha, Reena Roy, Jagdeep, Purnima, Nazeer Hussain, Bhagwan, Aruna Irani, Lalita Pawar, Ajit, Shivraj, Junior Mehmood, Shetty, Kuljeet, and many more. The video clip also includes another actress in a motherly appearance. I am not able to place the name to her, although I have seen her in many films. Request friends and readers to identify her.
The scenario is a ‘dargaah’. In common parlance, ‘dargaah’ is the final resting place of some great soul, and over a period of time, this place becomes popular as a place of worship. The lady arrives first and pays her respects. The Danny makes an entrance, and clearly he does not recognize the lady. However, the lady recognizes Danny instantly. For the remaining part of the song she is seen in a quandary – she wants to approach Danny, but holds herself back.
The on screen performance is by an actor behind a beard and moustache, whom I am not able to identify. Once again, request friends and readers to help identify him.
The words of this ‘naat’ tell about how beneficent the Supreme is. He has the capacity to bestow anything and everything upon us mortals. We simply have to ask. Wonderful words, and impressive rendering. Listen and enjoy.
