Songs from Artist name movies- article 1
——————————————————————-

While browsing through the list of film titles from 1931 to recent times, I was wondering how the names of films are decided. In the silent era, almost every silent film used to have one name for the purpose of Censoring and then in every state, the film would have a new title in local language. Usually, the silent films used to have One English name and one Hindi name, like e.g. Samudra manthan or Churning of the Sea, Amarsingh Dagger or Marwad’s Moti, The Leopard or The Lal Cheetah, The Treasure or Khazana, Society Scoundrel or Shareef Badmash, Dancing Girl or gutter ka Gulab, The Enchantress or the Zalim Jadugarni etc etc.

This method of naming the films continued even in the Talkie era, well into the 60s. Thereafter the pattern slowed down and later films had only one title. Some such double name films were Abhilasha or Postman-38, Abhinetri or Haar jeet-40, Aanchal or Sachha pyaar-50, Ace of Spades or Hukm ka Ikka-64, Manthan or The Churning-1960 etc etc.

Usually, the title of the film indicates the type of movie, like Sasural(family drama), Khooni Khanjar(Stunt), Ramrajya(Mythological, Woh kaun thi(Mystery) or Shaheed(Patriotic) etc. Real problem comes when when you come across film titles like Aadmi, Aag, Bhavna, Chetana, Darwaza, Ever Ready, Fashion, Gaali, Haveli, Insaan, Jaago etc, because you cannot get any clue about the type of the film from these titles. When I saw Film titles like Chandu, Aarti, Balam, Tipu, Nagma etc, I started looking for names of actors / Actresses as Film titles. I was surprised to find almost 90 such names from 1931 to 1970 period. The trend of such names declined with every decade. In the 30s, such Actor name titles were 35, in the 40s,the number was 29, in the 50s it was 15 and in the 60s there were just 9 such film Titles.

Then I tried to filter such titles in which films were made on actor names and those actors also acted in it. Shockingly I found only 2 such films, where the actor on whose name the film was titled was acting in it. Then I tried to get the film with actors name, where the actor was operating when the film was made-though he/she did not act in it. I found about such 25 films. An idea came to my mind, why not have a series on songs from such films and discuss the actor, film and the song etc.

Finally I contacted Atul ji. He encouraged me and suggested that I should go ahead with this project. ( These days our regular readers seem to be engaged in some or the other Project connected with the Blog !:). So, here we are today with the new Series “SONGS FROM ARTIST NAME FILMS”.

The first film selected to be discussed is MADHUBALA-1950. The lead pair was Dev Anand and Madhubala. This is one of the Two films I found where actor was acting in the film titled on his/her name.

Madhubala was one of the most beautiful actresses Hindi films ever had in its history. She was born on 14-2-1933 in a family of 11 siblings. She was the 5th amongst them. Her original name was Mumtaz Jehan begum Dehlavi. When her father lost his job, they shifted to Bombay and her father Ataulla Khan started seeking film roles for her. She did a few child roles in films and at the age of 14 years, Kidar Sharma gave her a break as Heroine opposite 22 year old Raj Kapoor in the film ‘ Neel Kamal ‘-1947. After this film, she changed her name to Madhubala ( from Mumtaz)-a name given to her by the great Devika Rani.

Madhubala learnt English at the age of 17 years and mastered the language quickly too. In her career, she acted opposite all leading heroes of her times like Raj,Dev, Dilip, Ashok Kumar, Shammi Kapoor etc. Fame of her beauty reached Hollywood and director Frank Capra offered her a role in English film, but her conservative, selfish and narrow minded father turned down the offer. Those days, an article titled ‘ The Biggest Star in the World ” was published in a Hollywood magazine-Theatre Arts, with her photos etc.

Madhubala did about 70 films, but only 15 of these films were Hits. She was born with a hole in her heart-Blue baby. The disease took an ugly turn when she vomited blood on the sets of ” Bahut din Huye”-1954, at Madras. In those days there was no cure for this disease. She went to London for treatment, but the doctors refused to operate on her. ( Now of course modern techniques with 100% success rates are available for this.) When she was born and was young, a Muslim Holy Man-‘ Kashmirwale Babaji ‘ had predicted that ‘she would get riches and fame but not love and happiness and that she would die young.’

In reality too, Madhubala got fame and money throughout her life, but happiness and love always played hide and seek with her. All her life she was controlled by her stern father who used her as a money making machine, not caring for what she wanted in life. Her search for true love and happiness started from childhood with her Delhi friend Latif, then Kidar Sharma, Kamaal Amrohi (her father approved him, but he had one wife already whom he never wanted to divorce, which was not acceptable to Madhubala), Premnath, Dilip kumar, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and ended with Kishore Kumar-with whom she was married for 9 years, without any happiness. Madhubala died on 23-2-1969 at Bombay.

Film Madhubala had a composer named LACHHIRAM, a name not known to many readers. he was a very talented but unlucky composer, who, despite his good work was never counted among the A grade composers. LACHHIRAM TOMAR was a Punjabi Chaudhary born in the pricely state of Kuthar in the present day Himachal Pradesh. His father died early and he was brought up and trained in music by the Rana jagjit Chandra of Kuthar, under the tutelage of Ustad Noore Khan. He came to Delhi at the age of 20 years and served in H.M.V.Company as a singer. He cut many records there. Side by side he was singing on A.I.R. also.

Aziz Kashmiri, riter and Director of Shorey Films, Lahore came scouting for talents and engaged him as an assistant to music composer for a salary of Rs.750 per month. He assisted in films like Champa, Badnami and Shalimar. His first independent film as a composer was Aarsi-47, which celebrated Silver jubilee. Then he did Mohini, Birhan and Director in 47-48 and did Guru Dakshina and Madhubala in 1950. The songs of Madhubala became Hits, but his luck misfired. He suffered from T.B. and had to leave everything. He lost one Lung also in it. However this brave man came back and did Ameer, Shaheed Bhagat Singh-54 (Sarfaroshi ki tamanna-Rafi), Maharani Jhansi, Guru Ghantal and Hazaar pariyaan-59. In his last spell he did Do Shahzade, Razia Sultan and his Last film was Main Suhagan Hoon-64.

Lachhiram Tomar died on 5-2-1966 at Bombay.

The cast of the film was Dev Anand, Madhubala, Jeewan, Randhir, Manju etc. The film was directed by Prahlad Dutt. The story of Madhubala was-

Madhubala(Madhubala) was heir to two inheritances of her father-wealth and heart disease. She was leading a lonely life-her only solace being the Doctor(Randhir) who was more like a father to her. Many young people were meeting her off and on with ulterior motives and there was regular tussle between them to win her favours. Amongst them the most insistent was Kalicharan (Jeevan), the proprietor of a dramatic company.

Madhubala was passing her days trying to draw what comfort she could. Seeing her condition, the Doctor advised her to go to a village as the cool and sedate atmosphere over there would have a soothing effect on her. In the village Madhubala met Ashok ( Dev Anand). Each thought the other a bit overbearing in behaviour. But time and meetings tore down and eliminated the first bad impressions and both began to love each other ( nafrat hamaare pyar ki pehli seedhi hai). They decided to marry. Preparations for marriage were going ahead. As luck would have it, Madhubala’s friends headed by Kalicharan came to the village in search of her. Gauging the state of affairs, Kalicharan decided his game. He cracked cruel jokes at Ashok’s cost. Ashok was stung to the core. He felt that Madhubala was a party to this. He broke up the preparation for the marriage.

Because of Ashok’s attitude Madhubala came to the city but with a weakened heart. She began to lose interest in life. Ashok began to relent. He came to the city and met Madhubala. But Madhubala’s cold attitude upset him. He felt as if the whole world had gone against him and he, in a frenzy, began to create havoc and nuisance in the street. He was fined for this misdemeanour. He was released as Madhubala paid the fine. Kalicharan played his cards expertly. He whispered into Ashok’s ears that Madhubala paid up the find just to spite him. He engaged him in his dramatic company in order to put an end to Ashok’s life. A burning cutain fell on Ashok’s head and he lost his eyesight. Madhubala went to the hospital to see him but Ashok scolded her. Ashok went to his native place. Madhubala went to the village. She got herself engaged at his place under an assumed name-Sheela. Under her careful nursing Ashok’s eyes were cured. When Ashok came to know that Sheela and Madhubala were the same, he got excited. But her Doctor(Randhir) explained the position and on all the misunderstandings being removed, the lovers were united.

Now let us enjoy this really melodious solo song by G M Durrani from this film. Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Lachchiram Tomar.

song-Nayi jawaani rut mastaani (Madhubala)(1950) Singer-G M Durrani, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-Pt Lachchiram

haath mein lekar haath kisi ka chhed de ek kahaani ee kahaani

Lachhiram was a good MD. He also gave music in Birhan-1948, Guru Dakshina-1950. He collaborated with K Narayan Rao in Hazaar Pariya

Thank you very much, Deshmukh saheb!
What an admirable patience and painstaking research for our enjoyment! I agree with your assessment that despite being hugely talented, Lachchhiram (like so many others of his ilk) was unlucky not to get his due.
For me, Lachchhiram’s name will always be associated as composer of one of the sweetest songs by Rafi, viz., ‘Dhalti jaye raat, kah den dil ki baat’ from the 1961 film, “Razia sultana”. I also remember him as music director of Meena Kumari-Guru Dutt movie “Main Suhagan Hoon”(1964) with ‘ Tu shokh kali main mast pavan’ and ‘sab jawan sab haseen, koi tum sa naheen”.
Warm regards,
Avadh Lal

Interesting series. Arunji, you are so innovative!!! I would not have thought of this topic.
Thank you for the informative post on Pt. Lachchiram, another MD who did not get his due he deserved. I knew him only for the song Gori tore nainwa kajar bin kaare…
I was unaware of the fact that Sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab hamare dil mein hai…. has another version. Here is the link for all who is interested.

Writer of both the songs (Shaheed e Azam Bhagat Singh-54 and Shahhed-65 ) is Ramprasad Bismail. Only one stanza is common in both the versions.
Thank you Sir. 🙂

My pleasure! Thanks to Arunji for mentioning this in the write up. Warna mujhe to pata hi nahin chalta and I would have missed this piece. After getting help from our “GG”” (Google Guru) I discovered that the original song has more stanzas than these two versions in movies. Hope someone can give us the details about the writer and the origin of this song. 🙂 Wiki has some info about the poem but if you read under the “Popular Culture”, it says this poem was used in the Shaheed-65 (MK actor) but now I know that it was used in Shaheed e Azam Bhagat Singh-54.
