“Shaarda” (1942) was produced and directed by A R Kardar. The movie had Mehtab, Ulhas, Vasti, Nirmala, A Shah, Badri Prasad Pratima Devi, Amir Banu, S Baburao, Shyam Kumar etc in it.
Four songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Here is the fifth song from the movie. This song is a light hearted song where the protagonist is desperate to get married. He would find people moving around as couples while an “aashiq” like him is still single, he laments. He is so desperate that for him even the colour of the girl is no bar- he is willing to settle for a “kaali” if he can not find a “gori”- he declares. The song becomes funnier because it is sung in bhajan style with appropriate devotional music to boot. 🙂
D N Madhok is the lyricist. Music is composed by Naushad.
Here is this lovely song with a difference, which I heard for the first time just a few hours ago.
Song-Duniya mein sab jodey jodey (Shaarda)(1942) Singer-G M Durrani, Lyrics-D N Madhok, MD-Naushad
Lyrics
Duniya mein sab jodey jodey
duniya mein sab jodey jodey
aashiq phiren nigodey
haay haay re raama
aashiq phiren nigodey
haay haay re raama
jodey jodey
duniya mein sab jodey jodey
yaad bahu ki hamen sataaye
yaad bahu ki hamen sataaye
raama jeth kisi kahaaye
ho raam jeth kisi kahaaye
jeewan ke din thhode
haay haay re raama
jeewan ke din thhode
haay haay re raama
jodey jodey
duniya mein sab jodey jodey
aashiq phiren nigodey
haay haay re raama
jodey jodey
gori nahin to kaali hi aaye
gori nahin to kaali hi aaye
dil ki lagi mori koi bujhaaye
dil ki lagi mori koi bujhaaye
khhaale ban gaye chhore
haay haay re raama
khhaale ban gaye chhore
haay haay re raama
jodey jodey
duniya mein sab jodey jodey
aashiq phiren nigodey
haay haay re raama
jodey jodey
duniya mein sab jodey jodey

The light-hearted song belongs to the same genre which was later well-exploited by the combination of Bhagwan (dada) & C. Ramachandra.

Anthony Gonsalves, a sixteen year old then, was apart of Naushad’s musicians. Shaarda was his first film, where he participated as a group violinist.
