Suniye
Suniye
Suniye
Suniye janaabe waala
Kya kehta hai munaadi waala
Pehle meri baat suniye gaur se
Phir baat kijiye aur se
Hear, hear, hear
Pay heed o gentlemen
Listen to what the town crier has to say
First listen to what I have to say
After that talk with others
Many of us may remember this refrain, or a suitable variation of this from early years of our lives. I have heard such declarations and announcements being made live in the streets. Generally in the accompaniment of two or three other persons, who play the drum, the dholak and other instruments to gain the attention of the general public passing by on the street. In my neighborhood, I remember seeing such pageants played out, till as late as early seventies. Generally these were used by local merchants and businessmen to advertise some products or some sale event. Sometimes these were also used by the local municipal authorities to make public aware of certain important announcements relating to civic amenities or municipal rules and regulations. Once or twice I have also witnessed announcements of personal legal nature. All in all, it was an event of interest for the young kids, almost as important as the roadside shows by small time magicians and bandar waala kartab (monkey and other animal shows) and the bi-scope waalas. One would scurry to gather the leaflets being distributed, just for the heck of it.
After the early seventies, this person called the ‘town crier’ or ‘munaadi waala’ has disappeared from amongst the various roadside events that I remember and grew up with. At least in the urban Delhi area, I see them no more. They have been replaced by posters, advertisements on the radio and television. They may still be active in rural areas or other towns, that I am not aware of. This oral presentation by a live person used to be an important communication channel in the local social systems.
Ah, ha, you must be wondering what is going on with this introduction to the ‘town crier’ phenomena. What is it that this guy from Delhi has up his sleeve? Atul ji has already spent midnight hours and beyond to cover the many anniversaries today. The century post is still a few days away. There does not seem to be any artist century close at hand. Phir kya chal rahaa hai? What is the grand ‘taaza khabar’ that we seem to have no clue about.
Well, here it is. In the early hours of Monday, the 13th October (i.e. yesterday), the visitor’s ticker on the blog quietly slipped past the SIX MILLION mark. I have been watching this ticker for some days, but yesterday the entire day was so busy that even after seeing the magic six million counter appear in the morning, I was not able to work on and send this announcement. As I am working late, I see posts coming in from Atul ji well past midnight, and that enthused me to complete this write up.
Marching on and gaining strength, I would say that this online musical artifact is transforming from just a blog into an online phenomena, unmatched and unparalleled anywhere. This labor of love is becoming a unique entity in the cyberspace.
Congratulations are due to all the bandwagoneers, all friends and contributors. And more than that, congratulations are due to the indefatigable stewardship that is afforded by Atul ji. And me? Always searching for a reason to celebrate – kuchh hangama ho jaaye – lets have a party. 🙂 🙂
This ‘taaza khabar’ song of the newspaper selling boy is from the film ‘Son of India’, the 1962 production by Mehboob Khan. ‘Son of India’ was the last production by Mehboob Sb, before he passed away in 1964. The lyrics are by Shakeel Badayuni and the music comes from the baton of Naushad Sb. The singing voice is that of Shanti Mathur. On screen, the song is performed by Master Sajid Khan, adopted son of Mehboob Khan, playing the role of Gopal, a child belonging to a rich family, separated from his parents due to estrangement. He is being brought up by a foster mother, and is making a living selling newspapers.
Once again, congratulations all on this most significant milestone for this blog.
Song-Aaj ki taaza khabar (Son of India)(1962) Singer-Shanti Mathur, Lyrics-Shakeel Badayuni, MD-Naushad
Lyrics
aaj ki taaza khabar
aaj ki taaza khabar
aaj ki taaza khabar
aaj ki taaza khabar
aaj ki taaza khabar
aaj ki taaza khabar
aao kaaka ji idhar
aao maama ji idhar
suno duniya ki khabar
aao kaaka ji idhar
aao maama ji idhar
suno duniya ki khabar
main tumhaare liye dukh aur khushi bhi laaya
main tumhaare liye aansoon bhi hansi bhi laaya
dekh lo aaj ke insaan ki haalat kya hai
aaj ki duniya mein imaan ki keemat kya hai
log jeete hain yahaan duniya ko dhokha de kar
aaj ki taaza khabar
aaj ki taaza khabar
aaj ki taaza khabar
aao kaaka ji idhar
aao maama ji idhar
aao kaaka ji idhar
aao maama ji idhar
suno duniya ki khabar
ek dhanwaan ne aaj apna dharam chhod diya
aaj ek bhookhe ne footpaath pe dam tod diya
aaj tankhwaah badhi hai to hai mazdoor magan
kal se ho jaayega baazaar mein mehnga ration
baabu ji jaayenge daftar ko pakode khaa kar
aaj ki taaza khabar
aaj ki taaza khabar
aaj ki taaza khabar
aao kaaka ji idhar
aao maama ji idhar
suno duniya ki khabar
yoon to ganpat bhi hain joseph bhi hain rahmaan bhi hain
ye to batlaao ke in mein kahin insaan bhi hain
koi roti koi paise ko khuda kehtaa hai
har koi paap ke dhandhe mein laga rehta hai
aaj bhagwaan se badh kar hai hawaldaar ka darr
aaj ki taaza khabar
aaj ki taaza khabar
aaj ki taaza khabar
aao kaaka ji idhar
aao maama ji idhar
suno duniya ki khabar
aaj amrica ne atom ka udaaya ghoda
roos ne aaj naya chaand pe rocket chhoda
kahin se aaj ka insaan kahin pahuncha hai
phir bhi sachchaai ke raste pe nahin pahuncha hai
kise maaloom ke ye aadmi jaayega kidhar
aaj ki taaza khabar
aaj ki taaza khabar
aaj ki taaza khabar
aao kaaka ji idhar
aao maama ji idhar
suno duniya ki khabar
aao kaka ji idhar
aao maama ji idhar
suno duniya ki khabar

Sudhir ji,
I was also keeping a watch on the visitor counter for quite some time. However,I could not keep a track of number of days it has taken to go from 5m to 6m visitors. Do you,or anyone else has any idea ?
These 6 million+ visitors from almost 198 countries of the world, from all 8 directions, are a testimony to the kind of liking and affection this Blog has created in their minds.
Although, some readers regularly and some more not so regularly express their comments and views etc on the pages of this Blog,I know that almost everyone has something or the other to say to us here, but they do not write.
I keep on getting letters from Indian cities and also from other countries like Australia,USA,UK etc from our readers sending their comments, corrections, additions to the info etc. I pass on these to Atul ji,wherever necessary.
The point is, this Blog has a special place in the hearts of its readers, who not only enjoy the nostalgia, but also keep a track on developments here. They appreciate the authenticity of information provided here and the Blog has built a high credibility with them.
The major share of credit must go to ATUL JI, undoubtedly. Without his apt handling and exceptional management this would not have been possible.
So,THANK YOU, ATUL JI once again.
Aagey Badho-Hum aap ke saath hai…..

Well, it is certainly an occasion to rejoice. Congratulations are definitely in order to the entire ASAD team.
No doubt words are not enough to describe the truly painstaking and backbreaking efforts of all the stalwarts in association with the highly charged and dynamic skipper Atul ji. My, My! Tremendous energy, indefatigable attitude!
Mr. Kamath has made a special mention of dear Sudhir ji, richly desrved too. Like him, other luminaries like AK Deshmukh saheb, Nitin Shah ji, Khyati ji and others have also shared their joy on achievement of yet another milestone.
Obviously, modesty forbids them to draw all the above-mentioned members (and others of their ilk like Nahm, PeeVeeSee’s mom, to name just a couple), etc., to draw any attention to their own contribution to the stupendous success but we the ‘blog-followers’ would be failing in our duty if we do not acknoweledge their sincere commitment and efforts.
So, our most heartfelt gratitude to all of you for enthralling us and enriching the quality of our lives.
Thanks & regards,
Avadh Lal

Shah saheb,
Could you please share some more information about Shanti Mathur?
I think, in the decade of 60s, she was a well-known radio-artist (as they were called in those days – TV broadcast was just a nascent phenomenon in India and yet to have a firm footing) in AIR Delhi (Lucknow?) stations.
Thanks & regards,
Avadh Lal
