LOST AND FOUND-GEMS FROM UNRELEASED FILMS….Song No. 5
———————————————————–
I have been seeing films and listening to film songs from a very young age,for which I used to get reprimands frequently. I had a habit of noting down everything I felt was important in my life. This also included information and comments on films seen in those days.As I grew up and made extra efforts( like bunking school/college etc) to see old movies. I had an attraction-cum-curiosity about the old films, actors, songs etc. Due to this i was called ‘ The grand old man ‘ at a very young age ! This habit of writing about films continued till the 60s when I decided to concentrate on my Career. I had a heap of notebooks, diaries, and make do exercise books made out of blank pages from old exercise books of past academic years.During my transfers in the job, many were lost, some were left behind and the rest were carried to next destination, despite stiff opposition from you know who.
After retirement, one day I took out all notebooks. To my dismay and sorrow, many were spoiled. White ants had tried to read what I had written and few notes had defied all this.I rescued some books and kept them at a safe place, not knowing what use they would be of. But we all know how possessive we are about our old things.
These diaries, notebooks etc came very handy when I started writing about old films and music. Slowly, one by one I discarded all those torn,old,ant-eaten diaries, transferring the data freshly in other notebooks. If only I had known that there would be something called Hindi Film Geet Kosh, I would have written less in the books. In my life,I first saw HFGK somewhere in the early 80s,when one of my friends in Bombay bought it. I was very much impressed by the work Mr. Harmandir singh ji had put in for this Kosh.
Later, when I read in details about his efforts in meeting people in different places in India (spending from his own pocket),as outlined in the Listeners’ Bulletins,I realised that only a person sent by GOD,especially for this purpose on Earth, could have done this Herculean task. The HFM loving people in the whole world are ever grateful to him for this monumental work.
But for the HFGK,how were we to know about the songs/singers or MDs in a film ?Where would we get such made to order details of Cast etc of every film censored ? And how would we know about the unreleased films? Hats off to shri Harmandir singh Hamraz ji.
Talking about Unreleased films, probably every actor must have had at least a film or two in his career which was left incomplete or unreleased. He did not have much to lose, but the singers and the MD had a lot at stake. Many an excellent, very melodious songs did not get their due popularity only because the film remained unreleased. However, some lucky songs got popularity despite featuring in an unreleased film. A famous example is ” jeevan hai madhuban”-Talat Mehmood in film Jasoos 50s. This is ofcourse an exception. Most songs are usually a washout from an unreleased film.
Today’s song is from a film called ” Basant Panchami”-40s,which was unreleased. There are hardly any details of this film available. The Music Director of this film was Inayat. Just Inayat. No prefix-no suffix. Now,how is one supposed to find out about such persons ? In the 40s,we find 3 varieties of ” Inayat”s. The first was Inayat Hussein, who composed music for Punjabi film ‘Kamli’in 1945 and then he migrated to Pakistan. There are no Hindi/Urdu films on his name in India. In Pakistan he became very successful, famous and a respected composer, winning many awards and rewards.
The second one was Inayat Ali. Film ” Galat Fahmi”-49 is credited to him. There is another unreleased film ‘Dilbahar’ credited to him.later on, all the songs of this Dilbahar were used in film ” Akashpari’-1958. Inayat Ali’s name was Inayat Ali Nath and he was the father of actress Rani Kiran,Asha Posley and singer Kausar Parveen. After migrating to Pakistan,he was the Music Director of Pakistan’s First released film ” Teri Yaad “-1948 ( Asha Posley and Nasir Khan). This way his name is permanently etched in the History of Pakistani Films. By the way, this First Pakistani film was a total flop.
The third was ‘ Inayat ‘-just Inayat,no prefix no suffix. However as mentioned by the uploader of today’s song on You Tube, his name was Inayat Hussain Qureshi. My guess is that since there was already one Inayat Hussain (Kamli wala) composer, this Inayat must have kept his name only Inayat to avoid same name confusion. More than this, there is no other information on Inayat.
Coming to today’s song, this is a song whose singers are not known. Looking at the lyrics, the song seems to be addressed to the Tangewala. The lady is obviously travelling in a Tanga, since the Horse hoof sounds are heard in the music. Some of my most favourite songs are Hoof-beat songs. The number One song would be ” Chale pawan ki chaal”-Doctor-41,sung by Pankaj Mullick. This is an all time favourite of many seniors. In the early and late 50s,there were a good number of Popular Hoof-beat songs like-
1. Bachpan ke din bhula naa dena-Deedar-51
2. Mera Salaam le jaa-Udan Khatola-55
3. Halke Halke chalo sanware-Taangewaali-55
4. Maang ke saath tumhara-Naya Daur-57 etc etc.
There were other Hoof beat songs like Baadal, Azaad and many more. This is one style of tuning which has become a history and in the present times,it is not Horse Hoofs but Human Feet tapping that is used. Like many other animals, even horse may become a rare animal in films and real life also.
Let us now enjoy this hidden gem from the unreleased film’ Basant Panchami’-40s…about the singers..Naam gum ho gaya.

taangewaale ho
taange mein bitha kar
mujhko le chal nagri paar
mujhko le chal nagri paar
taangewaale ho
taangewaale ho
mohe le chal sajanwa ke paas
sun sun naari ho
sun sun naari ho
main to ab na karoonga udhhaar
ho sun sun naari ho
sun sun naari ho
main to ab na karoonga udhhaar
naak mein nathni
kaan mein baali
aur ye haar singaar
naak mein nathni
kaan mein baali
aur ye haar singaar
is par bhi jab paisa maangoon
karti ho inkaar
bhala kyun karti ho inkaar
is par bhi jab paisa maangoon
karti ho inkaar
bhala kyun karti ho inkaar
sun sun naari ho
sun sun naari ho
main to ab na karoonga udhhaar
chhod diye hain chhal bal maine
achcha
hmm
chhod diye hain chhal bal maine
ab na karoon udhaar
baba ab na karoon udhaar
chhod diye hain chhal bal maine
ab na karoon udhhaar
baba ab na karoon udhaar
ghoda mera haan keh de to
ghoda mera haan keh de to
le jaaun us paar
tujhko le jaaun us paar
ghoda mera haan keh de to
le jaaun us paar
tujhko le jaaun us paar
chanchal naari ho
chanchal naari ho
main to ab na karoonga pyaar
taange waale ho
taange waale ho
mohe le chal sajanwa ke paas
