“Kashinath”(1943) was directed by Nitin Bose for New Theatres, Calcutta. The movie had Asit Baran Mukherji, Sunanda Devi, Bharati Devi, Nawab, Nemo, Puttan, Dilip Bose, Manorama, Buddhadev, Latika Mullick, Bijoli, Jawed Hussain, Radharani, Biren Das etc in it.
Six songs from this movie have been discussed in the past.
Here is the seventh song from “Kashinath”(1943). This song is sung by sung by Radharani and chorus. The song is picturised as a Radha Krishna bhajan song bhajan on Radharani and others.
There were two actresses called Radharani at that time. Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh, our beloved inhouse encyclopaedia, quoting shri Kamlakar Pasupuleti ji, Film and Music Historian, had given this information about them in the blog in the past:
The First Radha Rani was a born actress. She was the daughter of an Indian retired Captain and an European mother. She was active from her school days doing dramas and dances. She was a swimmer and a horse rider too. She sang very well. She joined British Dominion film company in 1930 and acted in many silent films with Debki Bose,Sabita Debi,Dhiren Ganguly etc.Her Hindi and Bengali was good. She acted in ” Yahudi ki ladki”-1933 and Kurukshetra-1945 with K L Saigal, her other films were Romantic India-36, Sawal-43 and Bhai-44. She acted till 46, then got married and left films for ever.
The second Radharani is one who acted and sang in Kashinath-43. Radharani was one of the finest non bengali singers of new theaters. She hailed from a marwari family settled in Bengal. Apart from film songs she rendered many private songs and were very popular , unfortunately her songs have been ignored on many vintage collections. She has a rich voice and a style of her own . ‘Rothi vrishbhan kumari’ is from film Kashinath -1943 with a fine score by Punkaj Mullik .
The song is beautifully followed by equally beautiful chorus in male voices .This song reminds me of some of the chorus songs composed by Anupam Ghatak another composer from bengal for Debaki Bose movie –Shri Ramanuj – 1943. I think all of them have their roots in Rabindra sangeet .
(all information from shri kamlakar Pasupuleti ji,Film and Music Historian).
Radharani (of Kashinath) had sung a few songs in the movie that were picturised on other actresses as well. This is one song that was picturised on herself.
Pt Bhushan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Pankaj Mullick.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.
