The voices that we hear most of the time are the usual well known voices that made their career singing in HFM. But sometimes we get to listen to voices who were basically classical singers and who were by and large disinclined to sing in movies. In some cases, they had to be cajoled and often paid unheard of amounts to convince then to sing a few songs in Hindi movies.
Some of the classical singers who have enriched hindi movie music with their singing include names like Ustaad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Pt Bhimsen Joshi, D V Paluskar, Ustaad Amir Khan etc. Then there were musicians like Ustad Bismillah Khan, Pt Ravishankar, A R Qureshy etc who worked in Hindi movies as musicians or music directors.
Listening to classical singers singing in Hindi movies is a divine experience.
Then there are singers who have made their mark singing light Hindustani classical songs like Thumri, Dadra etc.
Shobha Gurtu is a highly respected name in this field. She was in fact known as thumri Queen.
She was born as Bhanumati Shirodkar at Belgaum, North Karnataka and she took the name of Shobha Gurtu after her marriage to Vishwanath Gurtu.
The first time she sang a song in a Hindi movie was in Paakeeza and the second occasion was in “Phagun”(1973).
Here is the song that she sang in “Phagun”(1973). This is a rare song and it barely two minutes long, but listening to every second of the song is worth it. This song is picturised as a record player song in the movie.
Majrooh sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by S D Burman.
