Though Mumbai gangout happened nearly a month ago (on 21 december 2014), details about it are slow in coming. I wrote about my preparations to join this meet in this article on 3 january 2015. Then nothing happened for several days. I was pleasantly surprised to see an entertaining writeup from Sudhir ji on 13 january 2015 in which he describes his experiences from the planning stage till his arrival at the venue on the D day.

The above wonderful writeup has now inspired me to write the second part of my own take on this meet. So here is goes.

In the first part I had described my preparation for the meet, which included going to a shopping mall on 20 december 2014 to buy a handbag and also watching “PK” second day second show. :). Then I caught a night train to Raipur and spent the night there so as to be able to catch the morning flight to Mumbai without any anxiety. Ab aage ki kahaani…

I arrived Raipur just before midnight on 20 december 2014 and spent the night there. My flight the next morning was at 9:20 AM and so I obviously needed to report at the airport well in advance. The Raipur airport is far away from Raipur, nearly 15 km away in the midst of nowhere. I had tied up with one of my Raipur based colleagues and he had arranged for me to be taken to the Raipur Airport at 6 AM.

I woke up early at about 4 AM itself. By 5 AM I was ready to take on the world, I mean to take up the flight. 🙂 After taking a cup of tea, I boarded the vehicle that had arrived to take me to the Airport. It was 6 AM at that time, but it was still very dark and it did not look like the sun was going to rise anytime soon. I wondered if my flight would get delayed for the reason of poor visibility. As it is, trains and flights in the northern parts of the country were actually getting delayed quite badly for this very reason.

The other thought that occured to my mind was, will there be anyone there at the airport this early in the morning ? 🙂 You see, Raipur is no Mumbai or Delhi whose airports work round the clock. Average Chhattisgarhi folks are quite laidback in their lifestyle and they tend to be quite unhurried in their approach to life.

When I reached the airport, I found that I was one of the very few people who had arrived there at that time. There was just one security guard (of CISF). Staff working at the airport began to arrive leisurely one by one. The lights of the airport were switched off. One security guard asked his just arrived colleage if he had any idea how to switch the lights on. The colleage replied in the affirmative. He then went to the switchboard and that is when the lights of the airport were switched on 🙂

I had received an SMS on my mobile where I was asked to report two hours prior to the flight in view of enhanced security measures. Though I and other passengers had reported well before that, we could be admitted in only after the light could be switched on. 🙂

Once I had seen off my wife and daughter at this airport and they too had to go to Mumbai on that occasion. Personally It was the first time for me to be inside this airport.

I began to look for announcements/ messages like one looks for in a Railway station. 🙂 There were announcements for flights to Indore, Delhi and Hyderabad, but there was no announcement for my flight. In the meanwhile security checks for people of other flights began as well. My flight was a Jet Airways flight. Like other airport staff, they too were taking their own sweet time to arrive and therefore that counter had not yet opened whereas counters of other flyers had opened.

The counter finally opened and I went there. I had booked the ticket online and taken printout of the ticket. I had also printed the boarding pass online. The staff said that the printout was good enough and no fresh boarding pass was required. What about my luggage ? Here is my hand luggage, I showed her my bag. She did not even bother to get its weighed unlike what she had done with the hand bag of the person standing ahead of me. She handed me a tag to be tied to the bag.

I tied up the tag to the bag and waited. There was no announcement for security check of my flight though it was about time. I decided that I should as well report for security check. I did that. I as well as my baggage passed through the check without trouble. The only care that I needed to take was to carefully collect all the items in my pockets that I was asked to remove, which included important items like mobile phones, keys, dongles, tickets, ID proofs, etc etc.

Security check over, now it was time to wait for the flight. The flight was to arrive from Mumbai. I looked at my tag and compared my tag with that of others. I located some people who had the same kind of tags as mine. I decided that I would move only when they did assuming that they had to board the same flight. But when they showed no inclination to get up then I got up and began to pace up and down, which is my way of waiting for something or someone to arrive. 🙂

After sometime, I heard the announcement that the flight from Mumbai was arriving. In view of its late arrival, the flight from Raipur was rescheduled 20 minutes later. This slight delay was alright as far as I was concerned. I recalled that in case of my wife and daughter, their flight to Mumbai had got delayed by nearly four hours.

Announcement for my flight was made and people made a beeline. 🙂 While most people carried boarding pass supplied at the flier’s counter, I was one of the few “Technically savvy” (ahem) people carrying a printed out boarding pass. 🙂 It was scrutinised through a bar code reader and I was allowed through. So it was then that I realised that the barcode that appears in flight board passes (and also in Railway e tickets) can be read by bar code machines. That being the case, I suppose that Railway TTE’s too should carry barcode readers with them to scrutinise e tickets. But that I suppose is far less critical in case of rail travel.

The bus taking us to the plane arrived and I boarded that. I reached the plane, boarded it and took my seat. In these days of internet connections, people are allowed to print their own boarding passes and pick their preferred seats. It is a facility that was non existent in olden days. When I had first googled to find out about the flight to Mumbai, the concerned flight’s ad had mentioned “Hurry, only three seats left”. But when I booked my ticket and reached the boarding pass portion of their site, I realised that only three seats were booked by then. So “only three seats booked” was being projected as “only three seats left” by them. I suppose that is how most advertisers advertise in India.

I had taken advantage of all these vacant seats to book myself a window seat. I had booked a window seat in the front row right hand side just hoping that I will not be staring at the wing of the aircraft. I wanted to be able to look down to the landmass as the plane flew. My window seat gave me a good view and the wing was behind me, and I could see the wing too if I wanted to.

As people were taking their seats, I noticed a person going towards the rear of the plane. The face sounded extremely familiar and I wondered where I have seen that face. Then it struck me. Arre, it is the face of Raja. I have seen his photographs and videos many a times and I have in fact met him once as well. But what was Raja doing in Raipur ! I thought that Raja too was going to Mumbai to attend the same meet, aiming to spring a pleasant surprise among the participants by his unannounced arrival.

Soon I forgot about Raja and began to concentrate on the movement of the plane. The most interesting (and also the most critical part) in any flight is ofcourse its take off. And it is a lovely experience. Imagine an aircraft moving like a oversize bus from its location towards the runway and going back towards the end of the runway. Then the plane begins to move like how a fast bowler (a non Indian one) goes up to the top of his run up and then begins to run. After a slow sprint for some length, the jets are fired up, noise goes up considerably and the plane races on like a sprinter. On small airfields, you keep your fingers crossed (figuratively of course) and hope that the plane is able to lift off before it runs out of runway. Fortunately you feel the aircraft lifting off the ground just as it is coming to the edge of the runway and it takes off.

After take off, the plane climbs up at a rapid rate and it is several kilometers up in the sky in a matter of seconds. Watching landmarks growing smaller and smaller is an enthralling experience. Soon the plane is high in the skies and the landmass from then onwards begins to look like how one views them from google earth. One can see white lines that are roads, and blue lines that are rivers. A few minutes later, I found myself looking at a few massive chimneys. What place it could be ? It had to be Bhilai Steel Plant that I was looking at. On its south east side, I saw two huge water reservoirs and I wondered why they were there. Later, when I checked up with google map, I realised that I was indeed looking down at Bhilai Steel Plant with the two big reservoirs exactly of the same shape that I saw from the plane.

Encouraged that I managed to identify at least one landmark, I tried to make more identifications, but without success. How I wished that landmasses that were passing by had their names written adjacent to them, like how it is the case in maps. 🙂 I looked at rivers and water reservoirs and realised that there were many huge bodies of water scattered throughout India. Most of these are dams made on rivers. After some time, I became adept in identifying the dam portion of the water mass as well. I saw that the river bed would typically dry up ahead of the dam for several kilometers and after that the river would continue to have water in it once again.

One would come across small localities and also bigger localities. I tried to guess the bigger localities that I could see. I guessed a bigger locality as Nagpur but later when I checked up I realised that my guess was wrong. The flight path did not take it over Nagpur. Most likely I was looking at Aurangabad instead.

The flight was two hours long but announcement was made about the plane arriving Mumbai after one hour and a half only. I did not believe the announcement though and kept enjoying the scenary below.

It was then that I began to see mountains and lots of them. I was looking down at the Sahyadri range of mountains. From that height, stones appeared to be containing green moss. What was looking like moss to me were thick jungles, of course. 🙂

I did not realise that there were so many hills around Mumbai. Of course the plane was still quite a way off from Mumbai at that time.

It was easy to find it out that we were approaching Mumbai when real jungles gave way to concrete jungles. It was unimaginable to see an area so thickly populated. And just as the plane began to descent, I realised that the aircraft flew over the biggest slum in Asia (if not in the world) and it descended towards the airport.

Having flown in sky for two hours where huge land masses look like tiny specks, a naive mind like mine begins to wonder if the plane will be able to land at the proper place in the runway. I hoped that the pilot would not miscalculate and land a long way off from the target landing point. It must be said that the landing was quite smooth. I did not feel even the slightest of jerk. The plane had landed at Mumbai. I could see from the window that Mumbai airport was quite vast compared to Raipur. I wondered how Mumbai, where space is at a premium, airport authorities managed to obtain such a vast area for the airport. Of course all this area was acquired several decades ago, when land was available cheaply and easily even in Mumbai.

After getting off from the plane and armed with just a handbag, I exited the airport. I got an autorickshaw and asked him to take me to the meeting place which fortunately was quite nearby. In fact, directions were provided in an email that I had received from our Mumbai based organisers of the meet. I took the auto and the auto waala, familiar with the place dropped me there.

I think this account of my dayflight to Mumbai has taken a lot of space. So we all need to take a break. I will discuss the meeting in the next part.

Since I discussed the hawaai jahaaz yaatra in such great detail, it is only appropriate that I should round it up with an appropriate song. I in fact googled “Udan khatola” and “Hawaai jahaaz”, hoping to arrive at a Hindi movie song. The search led me to “Ham Bhi Insaan Hain”(1948). This obscure movie appears to be a treasure trove for special songs. Some people may remember that this movie had a dog song too which Mr Sadanand Kamath had used for a writeup during the runup to blog’s 10,000th song. While most of us were introducing each other, Mr Sadanand Kamath had introduced my two pets in that writeup. 🙂

It turns out that this movie also had a hawaai jahaaz song in it.

Here is this lovely song from “Ham Bhi Insaan Hain” (1948). In this song, the kids first fantasize about buying a car. And soon enough, they fantasize about flying in an aircraft. It is just the stuff that I did on that day. And in any case I am mentally at par with the kids who sing and lip sync this song. 🙂

Uploader of the songs of this movie mentions Shamshad Begam as the singer of this song, which is not correct. He had likewise mentioned Shamshad Begam as the singer of the dog song too. The main singer is a kid, and I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify the voice.

Lyrics are written by Gopal Singh Nepali. H P Das and Manna Dey were the music directors of this movie.

So here is this nice “motor car cum hawaai jahaaz” song from “Ham Bhi Insaan Hain”(1948). And keep an eye on these pages for the next part of the report. 🙂

She could be Parvez Kapadia who also sang the Dog song. She also sang 2 other songs of the same movie totalling 4 songs

The voice in Dog song (Parvez Kapadia ?) appears different from the voice in this song.

Could be.

For me, the solo voice sounds like that of Parvez Kapadia in Dog Song of the same film. For example, compare the voice in line ‘kaho kiski gali mein saari raat bitaayi’ in Dog Song with the voice in the line ‘ham to baadal ke sar pe chadh jaayenge’ in this song. Both voices have similarity.
By the way, both myswar.com and earthmusic.net have credited this song to K Parvez.

HFGK mentions Parwez Kapadia as the singer of this song. So accordingly, I will include this name as the singer. HFGK mentions four songs from this movie (including this one) as sung by Parwez Kapadia. Then one more song is mentioned as sung by Miss Parwez. I feel that this miss Parwez must be the same as Parwez Kapadia. I request our knowledgeable readers to tell us about this Parwez Kapadia/ Miss Parwez. Earlier I was under the impression that Parwez Kapadia was the kid acting in the movie. Now it appears that this Parwez Kapadia was only the playback singer in the movie.

Hilarious! Full of Atulisms. 🙂 Like “Then the plane begins to move like how a fast bowler (a non Indian one) goes up to the top of his run up and then begins to run”.

Sorry, am catching up with this only now. Have a lot of posts to catch up on – but my first goal is to read up all the posts on the Mumbai Gangout, tagged here as “Regulars’ Meet”. . 🙂
