“Kinaare Kinaare”(1963) was a movie that took too long to get completed. The reasons for the delay of this movie is more interesting that the story of this movie itself.

Here is what Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh, our beloved inhose encyclopaedia, has to say about this movie:

KINARE KINARE-1963 took almost 6 years in its making. The story of its delay is as interesting as the film’s story itself.

Nyay Sharma was sailing very smooth when he launched this film with all the dates of lead pairs, a good free location for shooting, enough money and everything else needed to finish the film in 3 months. Unfortunately, his main cameraman-Nagnath-died mysteriously while shooting the film. There were police enquiries and the shooting stopped for several months, finishing all the secured dates of Dev Anand and Meena ji. During this period, even his money was exausted and he was about to shelve the film, when Dev Anand sent M/s Dhun Investments P.Ltd, to provide finance and once again the film shooting started. Finally after 6 years film was released, but with disastrous returns.

KINARE KINARE is a tale of the misfortunes of an young man Kanwal(Dev Anand), who after graduation, returns to his village. One day he comes accross a vagabond trying to rape a village girl. He intervenes, there is a fight and the goon is killed by him in self defence. There is an eyewitness, but he runs away in fear. To save himself, Kanwal leaves the village and goes to another village where fe faints with high fever. Nilu(Meena Kumari), daughter of a retired person nurses him to health. They fall in love. The village dada Manohar Singh also loves Nilu and hence is after Kanwal and threatens him about the old murder. Kanwal again runs away to Bombay.

Here also he saves a Seth from crooks and gets a job of his secretary. Usha, boss’ girl friend starts loving Kanwal. When Nilu comes to Bombay for her Heart treatment, she meets Kanwal and they reunite, but Manohar Singh, who has followed Nilu reports Kanwal to Police and he is arrested.

The rest of the story is how Nilu and Kanwal’s friend Mithu, save Kanwal by locating the missing eyewitness and release Kanwal finally to marry Nilu.

The movie had as many as eleven songs in it, but several of these songs were deleted from the movie.

Nine songs from this movie have been discussed in the past.

Here is the tenth song from the movie. This extremely rare and unusual song is sung by Vinod Desai. Nyay Sharma is the lyricist. Music is composed by Jaidev.

I watched the movie recently, (using fast forward button liberally) in order to see which songs appeared in the movie. I was able to locate only about five or six. The song under discussion was missing and so it is not possible to say how and on whom this song was picturised. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the pcturisation of this rare song.

Song-O mast nazar tu chaahe agar (Kinaare Kinaare)(1963) Singer-Vinod Desai, Lyrics-Nyay Sharma, MD-Jaidev

Lyrics

o o
mast nazar
tu
chaahe agar
o o
mast nazar
tu
chaahe agar
duniya bhar ko
duniya bhar ko
bismil kar de
ho
duniya bhar ko
bismil kar de
majnu kar de
farhaad kar de
ghaayal kar de
paagal kar de
ghaayal kar de
paagal kar de
ho
ghaayal kar de
paagal kar de
o o
mast nazar

jab yaad ka toofaan aata hai
dil kalaabaaziyaan khaata hai
ro ro kar
aahen bhar bhar kar
tera aashiq chillaata hai
chillaata hai
o aaja aaja aaja mere dilbar
aasaan meri mushqil kar de
aasaan meri mushqil kar de
aasaan meri mushqil kar de
o o mast nazar

ab rok le apne teere e nazar
aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa
ab rok le apne teere e nazar
har tarf hai zakhmee dil aur jigar
Delhi Madras Calcutta Bombay
toot gaya hai laakhon sar
hai waqt bura
duniya na kahin
badnaam tujhe qaatil kar de
badnaam tujhe qaatil kar de
badnaam tujhe qaatil kar de
o o o
mast nazar

I liked the song as he sang with gay abandon, throwing caution to the wind and book of sur and taal on you..
Vinod Desai>>Anjali-57
Dev Anand salvaged the movie as the producer went bankrupt midway.

What happened to the Cameraman’s mystery? That would indeed have been a better story-line than the real story. Dev Anand tried to save Nyay Sharma and ended up ruining him. Kisi kisi ki kismet hi kharab hoti hai.

Last stanza sound like :

‘chhoot gaya hai Allah-o-akbar”
haaye waqt bura
‘duniya na kahin(kare)
‘badnaam tujhe’
qaatil kar de badnaam tujhe
qaatil kar de badnaam tujhe
qaatil kar de

Though the record carries the name of singer as Vinod Desai, recent issue N0. 194 of Listeners’ Bulletin (December 2022) from Hamraz ji has clarified that the singer Vinod Desai has told that he was not the singer and his father T.B.Desai had sung this song. As the father was in Police service, he gave his son-Vinod Desai’s name as the singer.
