A very adorable sweetness, that is what her voice always conveys.  Be it a song of joy or verses of pensive sadness, it is the amiable pleasantness of the voice that appeals the most.  Just earlier in the day, Bakhshish Singh ji and I were conversing about this anniversary today.  One of his comments sounded very charming.  He said, no matter what is the tone of the song, as you listen to it, you can feel a smile behind the sound.  May it be a cheerless song of sadness, even then the voice sounds as if there is a sweet smile behind it.  That is Suraiya’s voice for you.

Remembering this sweet and sad sound and the singer behind it, on the anniversary of her passing away today (31st January).

In hindsight, it is always the regrets that will outnumber the satisfactions.  Looking back, it is very simple to see and examine the outcome, and think about what could have been done differently.  It is a moot exercise, for the past is what it is.  And the easy thing always is to critically examine the action and the results.  What is missing from this equation is the sentiments and the emotional influences that would have prompted the actions.

She chose not to sing playback to other artists, thereby curtailing her own career by her own choice.  She fell in love, but the familial and social circumstances did not allow a consummation of her relationship.  She chose to remain within the family barriers, but then she also chose to remain single for the rest of her life.  As the career faded and the industry slipped past her in high gear, she chose a reclusive life, and shut out the external world for good.  Unfulfilled dreams, unrequited love and a discontented heart.  The proud and confident Jeet of ‘Jeet’ (1949) chose to give in to the pull of that melancholy, and let it be.

What remains are the celluloid memories of a young and enchanting beauty, and a collection of three hundred and some, twinkling gems that continue to be a source of joy for a multitude of her fans and followers.  A fabulous collection, enough to spend a lifetime on.

This is the second rare offering of another twinkling gem, that I bring to you today for your listening pleasure.  The film is ‘Khoobsruat’ from 1952, a Fazli Brothes Production directed by SF Hasnain.  The film has eight songs, written by three songwriters.  This song is written by Shams Azimabaadi.  The music is by Madan Mohan.  The film has Suraiya and Nasir Khan in the lead roles.  Other members of the cast include Yakub, Sengar, Noor, Husn Banu, H Prakash, Praveen, Shaheen, Meghmala, Shakeela, Munshi Munakka, Alka, Bhudo Advani, Baby Zubeda, Jankidas.

This is a lovely song of an expected encounter that is promised will happen.  The sentiments are expressed as if the search is over and the association is regained.

mil jaayegi mujhe meri khoi hui adaa
nazren jhuka ke phir mujhe sharmaana aa gaya

Aah, what a lovely expression, what expectation, and a what a perfect dream.  A dream that was not to be, in real life for her.

Memories remain, and will always tug at the strings of the heart.  Maybe, someone is still expected.
Listen and enjoy.

[Note: There appears to be a missed line in the second antaraa.  It sounds a little strange, but coming from the recording of a 78 rpm, it seems this is what it is.  I tried a couple of different sources, but the content is same.]

Song – Ae Chaand Ab Tu Jaa (Khoobsurat) (1952) Singer – Suraiya, Lyrics – Shams Azimabaadi, MD – Madan Mohan

Lyrics

kab talak mujhko rulaayenge rulaane waale
dil ye kehta hai zaroor
aayenge aane waale

ae chaand ab tu jaa
mera dewaana aa gaya
thi shamma jis jageh
wahin parwaana aa gaya

mil jaayegi mujhe meri
khoi hui adaa
mil jaayegi mujhe meri
khoi hui adaa
nazren jhuka ke phir mujhe
sharmaana aa gaya
thi shamma jis jageh
wahin parwaana aa gaya
wahin parwaana aa gaya
ae chaand ab tu jaa
mera dewaana aa gaya

wo aa rahe hain aaj mujhe
dhoondhte huye
deewaana aa gaya
thi shamma jis jageh
wahin parwaana aa gaya
wahin parwaana aa gaya
ae chaand ab tu jaa
mera dewaana aa gaya
ae chaand ab tu jaa
mera dewaana aa gaya

Thanks for this great song. What a fantastic song. This song should have been one of the better known songs for Suraiyya, Shams Azimabadi as well as Madan Mohan. Sadly this song has ended up to become so obscure that it was not even available online till now. Now just a few Suraiyya songs are left to be discussed. A list of missing Suraiyya songs is as following:

1942 1 Mere dil ko sajan samjha do (Shaarda)(1942)
Duet version by Nirmala Devi and Suraiyya

1943 1 Rang rangeela phaagun aaya (Ishaara)
mentioned in cineplot as sung by Suraiyya and Parul Ghosh,
HFGK silent on the issue

1945 4 Naina baawre pi bina (Phool),
Ab dwaar pe aayi hai (Phool),
Chakori chanda ke angna (Samrat Chandragupta),
O udne waale panchhi (Tadbeer)

1951 1 Aadhi aadhi raat dhola(Shokhiyaan)

1955 2 Najoomi hoon main kismat ka(Inaam)
Tadbeer ka ho teer(Inaam)
1958 2 Sajna jaa main naahin boloon(Maalik)
Morey man ki baat(Trolley Driver)

Atul ji,

Thanks for your comments; yes, a fantastic song that should have been much better known.

Also, thanks for the list of remaining 11 or so songs by Suraiya, that we now have to cover. I do have some of these, and I will search for the remaining.

Rgds
