“Hunterwaali”(1935) was directed by Homi Wadia for Wadia Movietone, Bombay. It was the first movie of Fearless Nadia in a lead role and this movie created her legend that lasts to this day.

Today, it may appear that the movie makers had it easy, but that was far from the case. The movie title itself was scoffed at by purists because it combined as English word “Hunter” with a Hindi word “Waali” which nwas unheard of at that time. So in a way, the title of this movie pulled off a major linguistic coup once the movie succeeded.

The movie, inspired from movies like “Robinhood” being produced in the west had Nadia playing princess Madhuri who dons male disguise to help people and fight villains. The main villain is the evil vizier (John Cawas ?) who murders her father (Master Mohammad, also the music director of the movie). In the end, she vanquishes the evil vizier and also wins over Jaswant her love, played by Boman Shroff.

This movie incidentally also had Jaidev (later a noted music director) who played the role of Chunnoo, Nadia’s sidekick. 🙂

The movie, made with a then huge sum of Rs 80,000/- initially had no takers to release it because of adverse publicity about a western woman playing a role that was a male bastion and that too of Indian males. So the makers of the movie themselves released it, after launcing an expernsive publicity. The publicity paid off and the movie turned out to be a watershed in the history of Hindi movies. The name Hunterwaali became a brand name and the legend of fearless Nadia was established once and for all.

Nadia was not particularly noted for songs in her movies unlike the lead actors of those days. Songs in her movies were mostly sung by others. This movie had eight songs in it. Two songs in the movie were sung by Govind Gopal, a well known bhajan singer of those days.

Here is a Meera bhajan from this song, sung by Govind Gopal and Party. Josef David is credited as the lyricist for this movie, but it is clear that the credit for this bhajan should go to Meera Bai. Music is composed by Master Mohammad.
